Bit of an experiment on painting up some Zone Mortalis walls printed up by Flinty

Aiming for "rusty, white paint massively chipped off" - It's going to be festooned with graffiti, posters etc. This is the base.

Took some really cheap Hobbycraft acrylic paint and stippled it on thick - adds some rust texture and breaks up the 3d printing lines. Base is brown, with a mixture of white and what they call "Iced Latte" stippled on at the same time with one brush to give the paint some dirt. Think I'll add some grey next time too.

I think it needs some metal chipping along the crossbrace edges, probably in either Tin Bitz or dark silver.

Bit more of the ZM. Painted the fans really shiny, as I figured they'd either be aluminium or galvanised steel.

Top of the wall in Necromunda Yellow and Black Hazard Stripes, because Tradition.

Nice, the thick craft paint works well for the walls, not sure if it suits the details though.

Yeah, its all a bit experimental. Looks fine on the pipes (It's Gotta Be Right With Hammerite) but the fan blades look like they've taken a bit of a beating.

So after the experimentation, I decided to go all in with this colour scheme.

First, layer yellow and black for hazard stripes - yellow base, black airbrushed on through a template cut out of cardboard

Then the base level of rust

Then stipple on the white/grey/coffee paint in horrible splodges to make it look really grimy, then give a pure white drybrush (only going down) to provide an overhead lighting effect and tie the different walls together - otherwise some were noticeably more grey or coffee.

Next up - metal. Now, I could use paints. Or... I could use metallic felt tips. Along with red and blue markers for wires, and a black marker to cover up mistakes on the black areas

I now have a new Zoom background.

Now varnish it, because this cheap paint is horrible, still feels sticky and from my failure with salt weathering, I know that if you scrub at it at all it'll peel off.

That's the boring bit out of the way. Now for what the underhive should be lousy with - grafitti.

Problem is, I'm awful at freehand, and can't get particularly fine lines out of my airbrush. A lot of underhivers are probably the same so it gets to stay.

HOWEVER, taking a leaf out of Banksy's book, I could make some stencils. My long time opponent Flinty has a Van Saar gang with many bright colours. Let's make a stencil out of the designs that GW posted up a while back.

How does it look?

Not bad, not bad - could do with more differentiation beween the colours. Break out the fine liner!

Much better. But stencils can only take you so far... what about some transfers? Download some fonts of the internet, print on home printable decal paper, quick layer or 3 of varnish to seal in the ink and then some Humbrol DecalFix - my boys, The Press Gang, have been putting up some tags...

But what if we could combine the two? Using some transparent decal paper, cutting the same shape out of a mask and spraying on some colour with an airbrush? How would my gang leader, "Citizen" Kane like to put his name to a wall or two?

I've generally kept the graffiti low-ish down - these walls are twice human height, and gangers probably aren't carrying around step ladders.

I have some more stencils still to apply, including some more "official" looking stuff in a stencil font for sector names etc. Also I've got my big spray of the Orlock fist to put down, and a couple more tags for Flinty's gang, the Verticies.

Beginning to suspect that my inability to do fine detail with an airbrush may be related to trying to use the dual action gravity feed Fengda BD-130 that came free with my compressor rather than my siphon feed single action Badger 200nh that I've had for ages (since siphons are a nuisance for small paint quantities)

However, I seem to be able to get MUCH better results out of the Badger.

Also, if you hold it upside down, it becomes gravity feed.

The Next Generation both agree as well, preferring the "Blue" airbrush for their Gaslands cars (Don't have photos to hand, but the eldest has festooned their team vehicles with citadel skulls. They'll fit right in with Warhammer!)

Nice Graphite.

The best ones are those with the black base with the colored lettering on top.

Cheers,

Top notch graffiti. The lurid colours capture it well. If you can be bothered, try out a bunch of overlapping stuff. I imagine gang tags in the underhive are ripe for being diverted, covered over and generally abused.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

The graffiti is looking cool, my favourite is the style with the "Kane" tag.
Also don't worry about the hieght thing, from what I've seen some people will go out of there way to put their tags in hard to reach areas, just so others find it hard to cover them

Cheers, folks. I'll get to some overlaps down the line.

For the Kane grafitti, I used this font
https://www.dafont.com/graffonti.font

It's actually black and transparent - the colour is behind the decal.

Decided to use some left over bits of Ambot and Ogryn along with a servitor and some Zone Mortalis bits to make a "Lugger" servitor.

Now, most servitors don't look like they could lug very much - even if you've got a bionic arm, if it's attached to a normal human skeleton you can't necessarily lift that much more.

So I decided to make a quadraped walker. Originally I was going to go for a fork lift truck look, but then had a thought that in mines, the Orlocks might like a "Pit Pony" to pull ore wagons back to the surface.

So, here we are - a centauroid horror, with heavy bolter!

Then I added a tabard to the front - tying it into the Orlock look.

Quite substantially chunky. Pleased with how it turned out.

Bit of ongoing conversion work inspired by the forge world female Orlocks

Took some more (better) photos of my Orlock women.

I was inspired by the new forgeworld Orlocks, and thought they captured what I thought a female Orlock gang member should be - no combat bikini etc. Pull on a T-shirt quick because you used to work in a mine, you now make a living on a hurtling truck in the ash wastes, and people need to be shot.

So, headswaps were the main order of the day for some of my existing plastic Orlocks (who's faces as modelled were never that great anyway) and a bit of bulking out of their T-shirts. By and large, that was all.

So, first up is my Juve. She didn't get a new haircut (I suspect close-cropped is pretty unisex on Necromunda) but did lose her laspistol in favour of a sawn-off shotgun. Shotgun was taken straight off the top of an existing gangers shotgun - more on that later - and stuck to her laspistol. This isn't her first weapon swap, the original had a stub gun.

Next up, my two plastic "close combat weapon" gangers - both got heads from the new Wreckers kit. Their right arms are still detachable for weapon changes. One of them gets a Sisters of Battle boltgun because More Bolters = More Good in Necro, especially for Orlocks

Next up - the gun-across-chest old plastics.

Straight headswap for a SoB - I suspect wearing some sort of filter mask while firing a Meltagun in a confined space is a really good idea.

Now remember the shotgun barrel? I had two identical old metal shotgunners, and no combat shotgun in the gang. Rather than a headswap, I attempted to model on some hair - which ended up looking sort of like poorly maintained dreadlocks. So I just went with that. An attempt at re-modelling the face to make the brows a bit less protruding didn't go quite as smoothly (literally) as I hoped. So I gave her an absolutely huge facial scar - think Ma-Ma from Dredd - to cover the worst of the damage.

I imagine this woman has been going around the underhive beating the hell out of everything, and seems to have developed a particular hobby of attacking Escher and stealing their hair dye. I suspect she's a future Arms Mistress in the making.

Of particular note is her combat shotgun, which should strike terror into the hearts of anyone who knows or cares about how guns actually work. Because this sure as hell won't. I don't think she cares. It'll make a brutal club.

Just to get in on the act, a couple of the duplicate dudes have also decided that now is the time to make themselves stand out buy growing absolutely crazy moustaches.

So there we are. A bit of re-modelling of already painted gang members, which came out generally rather well.

I've entered the April painting contest, and the theme is vehicles. So I'm building a small articulated rig for an armoured cargo container.

Components so far: two Gorkamorka trunks, three barricades from the Necromunda scatter scenery set, 4 wheels I got from Flinty many years ago and some transparent film used for separating slices of cheese.

I think it's obvious that the trailer has seen better days - though from the size of the Nitro booster on the deck behind the cab, this may be an elaborate Millennium Falcon style ruse. The cab will be sealed, as the air out in the wastes isn't too fresh. The container will be removable, and has magnetised openable doors.

I suspect this is quite a small truck by Necromunda's standards - I suspect a lot more cargo will be moved by massive land train convoys. This will be to carry smaller deliveries to outlying settlements... or high value cargo that wants to avoid Imperial entanglements.

Looking good. Not looking forward to facing that shotgun, no matter how unlikely it is to work.

Hope the vehicle comes together fruitfully

Just need to get back to spraying the undercarriage of the Kodiak!

Next stage of the vehicle - the cab is nearly complete, just needing a bit of green stuff to plug the holes. I'm going to assume that the whole windscreen hinges up to allow access. Mesh made from the Ikea-anti slip-rug stuff. It's brilliant stuff, like aluminium mesh you can cut with scissors. Slather on the superglue to fix in place.

https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/stopp-anti-slip-underlay-80227877/

Bonus - no need for interior detail.

Next up, the trailer. It's going to need locking points for the containers to attach - so push some balls of greenstuff onto the bottom of a container (coating the container feet in vaseline to avoid sticking). Then push down onto the bottom of the trailer and squidge in a dab of superglue to fix the greenstuff to the trailer.

Then lift off the container and leave for a day or so to harden. Going to add some extra greenstuff to shape it better.

Thanks, Flinty! Don't worry, nobody ever fires combat shotguns anyway.

At that point you want to throw a demolition charge.

You're hurtling across the ash wastes of Necromunda. The muties are hiding behind every dune and your rivals are catching up to you hoping to steal your cargo.

Why would you NOT have a toy ursid tie-wraped to the front of your truck?

Got the underworlds starter and started painting the warbands. The Big Metal Magic Guys are a fairly easy paint - possibly because they're so large - and two layers of Volpus Pink contrast paint gives the sort of cloth effect I'm looking for

The Horse Ghosts, on the other hand - I decided to do something a bit different.

I've tried some reverse-zenithal-lighting, airbrushing Militarum Green contrast paint straight down from the top. Then used a very watered down Thrakka Green wash while hanging the models upside down, followed by a Moot Green drybrush going upwards and a very light 50/50 Moot Green/Yriel Yellow drybrush. The aim is to make it look like the Ghosty bits are lit from below, while the boney bits will be a bit more solid. I think it's coming together quite nicely.

That’s a very nice effect coming through. Looking forward to the finishe pieces. Will you hit the base with some OSL?

I was going to, but decided against (mainly because the bases themselves look so nice that covering the detail in green glow would, in my opinion, have looked less good)

More progress from The Next Generation:

Xvy14 has been painting the Lizardman underworlds warband, which is coming together REALLY nicely:

Skin colour is Aethermatic Blue with a dry brush of Gauss Blaster Green, feathers and red details are Blood Angels Red, gold is a 50/50 mix of Retributor Armour and Auric Armour of her own devising. Gems are Soulstone Blue.

Chameleon Skink:

Spear Skink:

Shield Skink:

Blowdart Skink:

Saurus:

Skink Priest:

She's also been experimenting with some of my "weathering powder" (very, very cheap eyshadow):

Which she then suggested applying to this guy, quite rightly thinking he'd be a bit dusty. Her technique, which works really well, is to load up the brush and flick it above the mini, allowing the "dust" to settle naturally. I think she did a really good job,

Meanwhile, GG has created a small diorama of a volcanic base with magma cracks. And skulls. LOTS of skulls. She's got a good understanding of GW's core aesthetic.

Very proud of both of them.
