I am really enjoying the discussion and everyone is making pretty valid points.

An update on my work. Sanding and priming is going well. Im currently doing the armour plates. Each plate has been filed and sanding quite extensively. Then I painted it with acetone to smooth out the surface even more. I am now working through each piece, sanding it as smooth as I can and then priming it with Vallejo Grey Primer. Im very happy how smooth they turn out with all that work. Totally worth the effort

That is the pile so far. When Im done with the armour I will start priming the legs. They will be primed black. The toe supports will get primed grey as they will take the primary colours as well. Lots of painting ahead!

I don't understand, you seem to have a decent grasp of 3d design, modelling etc. yet you decide to use your time and effort to make a questionably legal copy of a FW model instead of doing your own? I would have liked it better if you'd done either a Lucius pattern or an old Beetleback instead, then I would have been impressed

Its basically a FW Titan? If someone released prints for a space marine wouldnt GW be all over it in an instant?

As long as you avoid trademarked iconography and it isn't a 100% copy there isn't much of a foot to stand on

Im very chuffed with how the armour plates are turning out. The sanding really did pay off. Anyone wanting to 3d print some stuff, you can definitely get it smooth enough for all of the nice paint effects.

The results of the sanding are looking good, that must have taken you quite a while!

koosbeer downloaded the files from thingiverse - no 3d design/modelling required. I'd actually downloaded the same model a few months back; I had no real intention of actually printing it, but I was curious to explore the parts in Cura and see just what sort of mammoth print times it thought would be required for this thing.

I have an Ender 3 Pro that I have been running nearly 24/7 for a number of months creating small minis for a game system I have. All of the files are from Thingiverse and when I am done to complete 4 versions of this huge game, I will have printed nearly 250 pieces of furniture and terrain, and over 450 minis. Most of these are tabletop small, around 30mm. Sure, I have the supports on a number that take work to clean/remove, but i am even printing figures that i have molds to cast polyurethane versions - it is just easier to hit print and let it go. The quality is so good and crisp, i cannot believe it. But, the quality of the 3d file is the key and some scans out there are really useless and horrible.

FDM printing has just gotten astoundingly good and the scanners out there are getting better and cheaper everyday. I can fully see scanned pirates of almost everything out there eventually and the likes of companies having to police these file sites will get crazy.

@MDSW: yeah I saw that video. I was worried about the surface finish on that technique so I have have spent significant time on each armour plate. I sand it smooth. Then I paint it with acetone that smooth it out more. I then sand it again with fine sand paper. Will hopefully have some great results.

When I did a Bladerunner blaster replica for my son I did wet sanding on the handle. Since it did not have any intricate details I was able to get the surface baby smooth without too much effort. I started with 300 grit and finished with 1200. Perfect results, but I could not do this on the majority parts of the gun, as it was not easy to sand flat areas. Here I used the paint/sealer method and the results turned out really well - just enough to take the edge off of some of the printing ridges. However, i printed the gun a while back with my A8 clone I had at the time. If I had done it on my Ender, I would probably not have had to do much of anything!

Whatever you are doing, it is working, it is an awesome model you have and it already looks terrific!

Still need to do washes and highlights but just wanted to see if I can get the colour mix right.

I am shocked at how far 3d printing has come. I got my hands on an Ender 3 last week and have been printing terrain non-stop. The cost, level of detail, and ease of use is perfect for terrain.

But looking at SLA stuff like the $300 Anycubic Photon, the level of detail you can achieve for actual minis is already within striking distance of plastic minis. I've always known SLA was good but I had no idea it was this affordable. Once entry-level SLA hits sub $150, the 3d printed mini scene is going to explode. There are already tons of Patreons producing fairly high quality sculpts for 3d printing:

Small update tonight. Did the gold trim and then painted the white plates. White is really hard to do. Feels like you need to do a lot of layers.

Next is washes and dry brush on the piece

Nice to see a build log of your progress, this bad boy is quite the undertaking. I finished one up at the beginning of the year. It's interesting to see the differences in your parts. Looks like a slightly updated set of files from when I started (began printing July 2018, finished building in time to paint over Christmas break).

OMG these titans are so gawd-super-spectacular that I do not even play 40K and I want to print one!!!

If I do not need to make it so big, I hope it scales down OK.

The creator of the files gives a percentage scale to get it down to epic so it prints pretty good smaller

Wow yours look amazing. Did you use normal pla printer or something else? Some of your parts are super smooth. Or was it you, some sanding paper and netflix

Thanks! I print in ABS and use acetone vapor to smooth everything without needing to sand. It requires some special equipment and care, but saves loads of time!

I did the same! and this was technically my first unit ._.

I just made this account because I didn't know this forum existed.

This is God-Engine Freja. I'm really proud of this one. The arms are magnetized so I can change them later as I go for different weapons(Typically of my own design), and such. I intend on changing the hand to a functional one, but for now this placeholder works.

Ive been asked about how the titan is put together. I sadly dont have instructions for that but I do have my image album so Ive put together a few video slideshows just to show the parts and how they come together. Ive posted these things up at my Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/koosbeer and Im also including the playlist. here. I havent painted it yet. Things have been, well, you know but I am going to make a stab at it and upload my progress on the different channels.

Here is the playlist of all the parts. You've seen the fly-by's so skip them. The assembly videos shows how it was put together

So I joined the forum specifically because of this thread

For people looking for this model - don't give up, its out there - just not on thingiverse. I won't point you toward it because I don't want it to get taken down, but if you look long and hard enough you will find it eventually. I did.

koosbeer - good man on seeing this project through nearly to completion. Looks rad!

Re: Pearl Clutching on heretically 3D printing a trademarked IP -

Look. Some of us just like to print things for the fun and challenge of it. Its significantly more work to print this behemoth than it is to just buy it from the store, it will not look as clean, and you miss out on some of the fun things it comes with. If you just really really want a titan, have no interest in learning 3D printing outside of making a Titan, and you have the budget for it, tbh you'll probably be happier just buying the FW one.

But lets be real - having the money to buy one isn't even a factor for most of us - its more that very few of us can justify spending >$2,000 on a single enormous model we >realistically< can't even game with outside of very rare occasions. That's 4 different modestly sized armies...or 4-6 car payments...or a mortgage payment...

So legality aside, I think most of us who are at the point of 3D printing a f-ing titan have given GW enough money on paint and $80 plastic tanks and $35 individual minis (with their outrageous profit margins that we all begrudgingly accept) that we should not have to feel even the slightest bit bad about printing something we know we will never purchase and will probably never use in a game. Especially if we already own the printer and have the experience and desire to do it.

They aren't losing money on a model you're never going to buy. And even if you were, that minute amount of lost profit is a drop in the bucket.

At this very moment I am queueing up parts for a Warhound titan in my resin printer, while also planning a supply run to my local GW. And I don't feel the slightest bit bad about it.

Hi everybody...
This might be the wrong place to ask but I've been looking for the titan over at thingiverse and the page of this model is down. Same with every link to it.
That brought me here and I was wondering if any of you might have the stl for me since I would love to print this titan on my Mono X.
Thanks

I have printed another part for the titan. Even though the paint job isnt done (its VERY daunting) I decided to print the Arioch Power Claw and paint it in the scheme. I also recorded the whole print, clean, build and paint process. I really like how it turned out.

im fairly new to Dakka but the chances of me seeing this while I had just watched your videos hours earlier is small. When the "niche" in "niche hobby" finally rears its head.

Gotta say I'm really impressed. This is very interesting and awesome!

I know it is very possible to print resin at such a high resolution that the surfaces look and feel perfectly smooth. However, I doubt anyone would invest in such an expensive printer unless they intend to print like 20 warlord titans or are really into 3d printing at a professional level.

I'm very keen to see when you completely finish!! I'm honestly also curious to see how it matches up to the FW side by side besides the print-layer visibility.
