Two for the price of one on today's teaser...

The World* and King of Fish.

(*Note: Many of you will recognise The World from Ian's time working with GW back in the 80s, gracing as it did the cover of the WFRP supplement Death on the Reik. For those who are wondering, Ian owns the rights to all the work he did for GW back then - it was very Wild West back in those days with regards to contracts, IP and so forth!)

Wow, good on Miller for retaining his copyright! I certainly know a lot of illustrators were burned pretty hard in pulp media those days.

And the King is just awesome.

Yeah good on him. I wonder how GW did that Realms of Chaos reprint last year then...

There are lots of options there, including him getting royalties in perpetuity for an open-ended contract in which they use the work (again), them negotiating the use of his art again, or that part of the original contract was that the artist retains rights to the work and the publisher retains the right to print the same book in any number (i.e. second printings or later reprints).

There are quite a few ways in which both parties end up benefiting from a creative contract and neither has complete control over the work. It just happens that most illustrators before maybe the mid 90s didn't know how to negotiate contracts and/or didn't have the power to.

When’s this likely to go live? Not really one for Kickstarter, but this I will be going for

Well, there are only so many cards, and they'll want to preview more to keep people's interest during the KS, so... I'd be surprised if it were more than 2 weeks out?

how many of the cards will be digital edits/composites like this one? The coloring on most of the others look good but I'm not a fan of this cut/paste stuff with generic background.

Yeah, the triple paste and blacks that clearly don't match is a bit disappointing...

Greetings Tarot Designers,

Is the white / black card above with the skulls is the 3 of Swords / Blades? If so, I commend the choice -- the cycle of strife, pain and distress which begins with that card number in the suit is well depicted.

Hope to hear some news soon.

Apologies for the lack of updates folks - life got in the way for a bit but, finally, it is almost here... May I present to you the forthcoming completely official Ian Miller's Grim Tarock!

Due for launch on Tuesday 12th November, this Kickstarter campaign has been setup to produce a deck of 78 tarot-sized cards by fantasy art grand master Ian Miller. There are also some rather tasty stretch goals lined up...

Ian isn't on Dakka but if you're on Instagram you can follow him @edwindorf

All the doodles are gone, sigh

least i'll get the cards,,and the book

from the comments

James Sherriff

Quite a few people have been in touch about missing out on the Collector pledge. Difficult to add more for various reasons, not least of which being the time it takes for Ian to do each doodle! I will speak with Ian about maybe adding a few more, but this is only a maybe at this stage. All I can suggest right now is to keep an eye out for updates in case we add a few more!

so i'll be keeping an eye on things for sure

Cheers guys! Smashed the first stretch goal already, so everyone gets a free bonus card - an alternative for the World! And we’re already very close to achieving the second stretch - the Grim Tarock art book add-on...

Pledged with enthusiasm. I look forward to seeing this come to light. The price is fantastic. I collect various decks and many indie projects cost $75 or more. Cheers to this.

new stretch goals

Update #6

More juicy stretch goals!

November 16, 2019

Thanks to all you wonderful backers making this campaign such a runaway success, we have had to scurry about planning some additional stretch goals for you. We feel it is only fair that, because you are obviously extremely awesome people, you get the opportunity to have even more cool stuff!

So over the past couple of days, myself and Ian have been busy working out what stretch goals to add. Alternative cards are great, and we know you love them, but we thought maybe we could offer a little something else. Something like signed art prints, perhaps...?

And so we present to you, our fantastic backers, two more stretch goals to tease, tantalise and maybe encourage you to share the Grim Tarock campaign even further!

STRETCH GOAL: £12,500 - SIGNED ART PRINT ADD-ON

That's right, folks. This art print will be signed by Ian Miller and available as an add-on for a mere GBP10! If we hit this stretch goal you can have one of these prints by simply increasing your pledge by GBP10. When the backer questionnaire comes out after the campaign ends, you will be able to confirm this selection with us.

STRETCH GOAL: £15,000 - FREE BONUS CARD TO ALL BACKERS

Who here recognises this old chap with his rather spiffing robes? If we reach this stretch goal, all backers at the £15 GRIM TAROCK and £30 GRIM COLLECTOR pledge levels will receive yet another bonus card - this time The Magician. That will take your decks to 78 + 4 cards. So 82 cards in total!

Thanks for joining us on this journey and for being such incredible backers. Until the next update!

Cheers,

James (Ian says hello from the foggy cupboard btw)
