I just count my usual load out. If want a physical upgrade I'll model it on.

Calculate the averedge point of a model in your codex. Find out what model is closest to that amount (X). Find out how much that models weights to get Y. Weight all your models and divide by Y and multiply by X. End result is your point averadge.

I’m tempted to actually try this. The problem, of course, if the amount of old metal mins in my collection is going to massively skew the numbers.

Murrax9 wrote:Hey everyone, kind of a small and strange question but I want to work on documenting my collection and would like some advice. I see in many signatures people will put the number of points that they own of a certain army like (Raven Guard 1500 points) etc. When you guys do this, do you count upgrades? For example, adding support systems for Tau or making a model cost the most it can? Or do you just count the base price for everything and use that as the number?
Thanks!
I usually count everything with every option each of those units have for warlords or characters with flexible option I built my characters to have which ever options and usually stick to with the same options so I just count those, example warboss with combi shoota of which ever kind and a power klaw so X points unless I make a change to that model. More often I have another of those characters with a different load out, so I just also count that one. I have a known number of models with known options mostly and only adjust for games with flexible units, which has little effect on my over all total. Other than that it depends on which edition you are playing and those appropriate points costs. I had over 20,000 point of orks in 7th edition points. I haven't had the interest in recounting for 8th edition. I just know I have lots of points.

This is definitely among the best ways.
The only way more accurate is to sum up the total sum cost of models you own [according to their price in the year you bought them] and multiply the average power level of units in your codex divided by the averaged cost in 1987 of units in your product line, and then multiply by 20. This way you avoid dealing with the metal or plastic question!

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

Remember to factor in the price of metals (wholesale) for the year the miniatures was bought - and those pesky metal vehicles.

Been a while since I counted. Not sure what it would be in 8th.
Let's start with something I remember... 'Nids.
*waves wand at Battlescribe*
13,247 points.
And that's with about half my Warriors added as I'm not sure what the rest are armed with, and probably fewer Genestealers than I actually have. Man... that's quite a bit.
Need more Hive Guard and Tyrant Guard though.

Honestly, I haven't updated my points numbers in my signature since I counted them up back in 7th edition. Heck, I have added two other full armies well over 2,000 points that I have been meaning to throw together article links about their lore with pictures but haven't really bothered. I also think I should probably take off the Fallen one as that project that I though would have had more of a Codex presence. I haven't really done much with my Fallen outside Kill Team. Even them they rarely get played.
Might have to update that stuff soon.

I have entire companies... so no, I'd rather not count points.
By companies
2 IH HH
2 UM 40k
3 DA 40k
1 RG HH
Almost 3 Guard
At least a company of farsight enclave tau
Close to a company of SW and BT (each)
More than a company of Orks)
1 GK
At least 2 of Black Legion
less than a company of 'crons

I find that for really big armies, I'd rather use excel than Battlescribe. Spreadsheets will stay constant, and if you set them up properly, you can separate the point cost per unit and the number of units, which can help if you either add more stuff, or points costs change.

Well, I use a spreadsheet that lists every model I have and what they are armed with and calculate their total points costs based on what they are visibly armed with on the model. I don't bother with relics and "invisible" gear and similar upgrades. If there's a change in points I just go to the cell that calculates the points and change the variables.

WYSIWYG. Organised in units with leftovers thrown into an extra unit if possible. Rhino chassis as the most powerful variant I have the turret for- mostly Razorbacks. Flyers and Landraider chassis I do the same thing.
It's been a while since I got them out and added it all up. Might be a job for the next rainy weekend.

I use battlescribe, trying to be as accurate as possible, with lists something like "Total eldar".
Apparently I've got nearly nine thousand points of eldar and just over seven thousand of salamanders.

Could be worth it to just reverse-engineer it from Power Level?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't power level just the average points for a unit ((min loadout+max loudout)/2) divided by some number to roughly bring it to single digits? Just take the power level and multiply it back.
I agree though, I want to price out my armies but have never really known how to. If someone knows what the PL multiplier is, I'd love to figure out my points. Listing power level just doesn't have the same feel.
Edit: yea looks like 1PL translates to 20-23 points. So just do Power Level and then multiply by 22? Should get you a pretty honest number if you don't want to tally up each individual frag grenade.

PL is approximately 1 per 20pts, but it doesn't account for units with a really big difference between the top end and the bottom end (ex. Deathwatch Veterans are 2PL/model despite the fact that the implied army of all pseudo-Devastators loaded with all possible heavy weapons is a terrible idea), and it doesn't get updated until the datasheet gets reprinted so units that have had big points changes since the Index may have an inaccurate PL.

Very fair - I guess I've always thought of the Army Points Lists from a collector's perspective where it's the general size of your collection rather than an actual representation of playable value.
