i showed it to the FLGS group and they thought it was funny. so i thought it was funny enough to share since it is rare that a game company has a bit of a sense of humor, not remembering that comedy is now "cancelled" George Carlin is spinning in his grave.

nope, just built a steel guard force and the armor suits have a little different sculpt (no open hatch, more square topped) the newer minis appear to be exactly the same quality and material as the older ones (i have both).

Regardless of whether or not it was racist, that exact punny name has been done many times before. It's really old, really tired. Claiming it counts as a company having a sense of humor is pretty dodgy--if PP released a twelve inch pianist mini for MonPoc, or DZC released an airplane made entirely out of the black box, would that really be indicative of a good sense of humor?

No. No, it would not. These are sub-Dad Joke jokes, and we are all lessened by them.

It would at least be indicative that they have a sense of humor. Whether it is a good one or not, at least it means that maybe people should chill out a little and not take things so seriously because hey, they aren't.

Bullploppies. As someone who has been a professional comedy writer, I could fill pages on the nature of being a comedy writer, but I think paraphrasing Abraham Lincoln works well enough - you can make some of the people laugh some of the time, and all of the people laugh some of the time, but you can't make all the people laugh all the time. No sense in trying. Just do what you think is funny, enjoy the company that sticks around, and the people not laughing can go elsewhere to find something else to laugh at.

For me the real news in this thread is Dust is still in business.

As a comedy writer, if you turned in jokes that had already been done ad nauseum since the days of Newhart, Rivers and Rickles, you'd risk losing your job.

We're talking about a joke that's older and more worn than Interrupting Cow or man walking sideways through airport turnstile going to Bangkok.

Yeah, I think this is mostly just kind of inane - but that's the casual bit. It seems some people get upset when they're informed of anything regardless of the level or tone with which that delivery is done.

This isn't funny, it's just... tired and old. Mag Uruk Thraka was at least a little fresh back when that White Dwarf issue came out, and you could definitely do funny bilingual puns, but this is just lazy.

Well the big suit isn't out yet...alot of stuff is on the horizon-priest self propelled walking artillery on the bulldog heavy tank body, a P61 black widow heavy airplane with phaser cannons(they just released the phaser loadout on the pelican(p-38 plane), japanese battle robots and other things we have seen the designs for.

I get all my dust stuff through miniature market or noble knight games. they usually have good deals on them. especially when miniature market clears out the old FF stock.. i picked up 2 teams (4 minis per box) spetsnaz artillery spotters for $6 US that way..

Palo's European site has a bunch of the special minitures but they are more expensive-the dustified units-Panzer IV Hs with laser cannons, laser STUGGs 8rads, armored cars etc...

Keep in mind there are 3 levels for dust models

-basic kits-the cheapest route but are not assembled or painted.
-ready to play-primed, decal'd and assembled.- most cost effective route if you want to get them on the table fast.
-premium edition-fully assembled and professionally painted-incredibly expensive but if you have money to burn or hate to paint it's the route for you.


On a 6X4 table i find that the 150 point level is best army size roughly equal to a 2k list for 40K- to give you an idea on what that looks like here is a few examples-


The SSU steel guards force-as close as you come to a horde army for heavy troopers with some light artilery support and light combat engineer walkers (arty crew not pictured for transport reasons)





This is a laser themed axis heavy grenadier force with 2 characters. ( i have since found my actual pilot character model to replace the stand in.)

Why do some people assume that anyone calling out racism is “upset”?

I think this was racist, but I’m not upset. I’m not offended. I don’t think it should be acceptable, I do think it comes across as old fashioned and cringeworthy. I do think the person who thought that mini with that name was a good idea is an idiot. I am not, however, upset.

Though this is veering dangerously off subject, this is not necessarily the case. Joke stealing is bad, but there are a group of jokes that I would say are... I guess cultural heritage. They've been around since before anybody alive can remember, can't be attributed to any individual person, and would basically be considered out of copyright even if they were. Benny Hill, for example, extensively used jokes well known to school children at the time (and often repeated jokes between specials). These can be extremely useful in writing as a cultural shorthand for building character personalities. Also, seeing one of these things when you least expect it can be hilarious.

It's kind of like quoting Monty Python. You aren't saying you created the "it's only a flesh wound" line - you are referencing it towards some particular effect. In this case, the purpose of naming this character Dr. Sum Ting Wong is less making claim to the joke and more of a cultural reference in an unexpected place. It brings a sense of, I guess, mirth and irreverence to what is otherwise a serious setting (alternative WW2 is hardly a place for mirth and irreverence under normal circumstances) - is a large part of what gives Dust 1947 its personality. Combine that with a pin up art style that would look at home on the nose of a WWII fighter plane, Dust's alternate version of WWII is fairly unique among all the other alternative WWII settings out there (and there are many). Throw in the Vril (coming soon) and cosmic horror with the Cthulhu faction, and Dust is a pretty cool place to wage fake war.

Honestly, wet blankets should avoid Dust altogether. There's no shortage of things in the setting and game to give easily offended people a conniption.

Well Sqorgar, we have different ideas about mirth making.

can't say i was amused exactly, but i had no issue with the opening model here. this Dust thing sounds like something i may need to keep an eye on, just because i kinda like the look of these models in these later shots.

In fact, I strongly recommend we move on.

Nothing about the naming or DUST in particular, however something about this mini seems off. I think its the legs. What is the artist trying to convey? Running? Prancing? Dancing a jig? That right leg angle seems wonky, especially given the model's focus on what he has in his hand.

Which mini specifically? i post several pics,
