Hm. Considering the last several editions of the game have dropped in May or June, I wonder if they're going to break that tradition with 9th. If this is actually coming out next month, they've done an amazing job keeping it under wraps. I kinda doubt it though, considering how much fanfare they did with 8th leading up to its release. There were weekly articles giving away rules as I recall.

Well, i guess that now the ITC vs CA arguments will be blown away.

What do have left to discuss for those nice ultra long threads?

Ok, according to the stream you now get one codex, and to "unlock" more codici you need to pay CP.

This is how it should have been. You sacrifice CP but get the benefits of the allied army.

It's really weird isn't it? And if they left 5 years between books like they used to people would complain that things weren't being updated quickly enough.

I've been playing 40k for about 25 years so I'm well aware of the way GW operates. thanks.

The difference which you seem to be overlooking is that at the beginning of 8th they told us that this cycle would be different as updates would come through the regular FAQ's, splat books like PA, and Chapter Approved.
They made a point of stressing this new model and way of doing things and now it seems we are going back to the same old cycle of new editions and new Codexes. So it turns out 8th was no different to any other edition.

You are welcome to shill for GW if you like but i feel a bit cheated given what they promised.

well people that started in 8th and never played table tops before, may not have been in the know about what GW can do at least at the start of the edition.

But the changes they promise seem nice. I just hope the app is not going to be subscription based. If codex become app only, I won't have a way to get rules, assuming we get a new store in town in 9th edition.

The changes they previewed (in the least specific manner possible) are all just things which we used to have in past editions before GW broke them.

Small games
Vehicles not being locked in combat
Fliers making attack runs
Terrain rules worth a damn
Blasts being more effective against hoards
Campaign/experience system

At the risk of being a GW shill, I think you overinterpreted what GW said. They have done updates via regular FAQs, splat books, and Chapter Approved. That doesn't mean they would never update the core rules or the Codexes with a new product. They rolled out a new Codex Space Marines last year, so the idea of new updated codexes shouldn't be a surprise by now. It seems we should expect the new codexes to incorporate PA, new models, and new 9th editions concepts like the Crusade system. Won't it be nice to have that all in one place?

GW has announced that purchasing a codex will include a code for the App for that codex, so you get both for one price.

I'm sure they'll break something new while fixing what they broke last time. They'll need something to fix for 10th edition after all.

Have they actually confirmed that their will be a cycle of new codexes?

I haven't seen the stream yet, some of you seem to be saying that's the case and my friend who watched the stream said they didn't mention new codexes at all.

So I may be getting my panties in a twist over nothing

Yeah but at least "blasts being effective against hordes" won't meant "marker system that leads to insane movement micromanagement and time-soaking" this time. It'll be a quick thing like "always get max shots against large units" or something.

Theres an FAQ document.

It says existing codexes will be valid initially. It also says armies will get new codexes.

Yep. They literally said this on the stream. Blast is a new rule that has appropriate weapons (battle cannons, frag missiles, whirlwinds) get maximum hits against large units of infantry. It will be interesting see what large is and what that does to the point value of those weapons and units.

Isn't the Emperor's birthday observed by GW on August 8th? That happens to be a Saturday this year...calling it now for the release date.

Pure guess but over 10, with something making those large 20 man squads more appealing. Although, thinking about it from a Guard perspective is a bit odd. Maybe they will make Guardsmen into larger squads, as I imagine they are one of the prime targets for horde blast weapons.

They didn't confirm that they're intending to fix Assault weapons, so perhaps they're planning to hold on to that one for 10th.

I’m pretty excited about this! I know some people called it, but I really didn’t expect today’s big reveal to be a new edition. Happy I was wrong!

I’m excited about assault primaris, new cover rules, paying CP to add allies, vehicles shooting in melee ( hopefully they don’t have to target just the unit(s) in melee with them), the promise of being able to play your army in line with its lore/theme (sneaky, psychicky etc), the crusade narrative stuff and the balancing for different sized games, especially on the smaller scale. Most of all excited about the army builder app and the digital codex being included when you buy a hard copy!!

Will have to wait and see if they can deliver on the promise though.

I was hoping they’d have said something about reworking morale and falling back though, but maybe they will but didn’t think it exciting enough to announce it?

Given so many horde units are terrible, the idea that you can't lockdown non-flying vehicles and will now be additionally vulnerable to certain weapons doesn't fill me with joy.

Functionally I think it might be great to throw all "D6" shot weapons into the bin - and give a fixed number of shots depending on what you are shooting at - but this would require giving a sort of "profile" to every unit in the game - i.e. Horde infantry, Elite Infantry, Light Vehicle, Heavy vehicle etc which isn't impossible to imagine, but seems a bit clunky.

A rule of the tune of "you get D6 shots, but if the unit has 10/20+ models in it, you always get 6" works, but it feels like a major nerf for the few units that have that many models in.

The idea is very nice, and good. My problem is is that I have no device to run an app on. My phone can't run any apps, and my mom is not going to let me put it on hers. A me only problem for sure, but still it worries me, if GW decides to make FAQ or CA only sold through apps.

I wonder how GW is going to change the rules for reavers, because in a world where primaris intercessors with chainswords exist, they get even less useful.

Also the new stormshield captin with power sword or magic pistol looks really cool. Not for my army, but still looks very cool.

So when I went to bed last night, there was a chance that we'd have Kroot fixed by the end of the year. Now it's 3 at least.

Dark Eldar heroes? Probably not until after every marine codex gets re-released. I thought we might have even had another set of plastic aspect warriors.

Not for years now.

No imperial agents. four years if ever.

And given my luck, the next sisters dex will suck.

Was thinking, after seeing the new cinematic trailer, how would people feel about the new starter set being mixed Imperium vs Necrons? So you get some Sisters, Marines, and a few Guard. Better represents the mixed nature of the Imperium, and gives more of a taste different Imperial factions.

I can see some Guardsmen being included, in a similar way to cultists were a while back. Lets them increase the model count without increasing the points too much.

Maybe there are going to be two starters, marines and necron are getting so many new models.

Maybe even the croped primaris land speeder is the real deal .

The three 'featured factions' are the ones that also are in the cinematic for any reasonable length of time. There's 3 Guardsmen too, but they get gooped pretty quick.

I agree with this sentiment and echo it.
I'd much rather we got to see some entirely new factions for 40k and fill in the existing holes in the ranges rather than re-booting the Codex cycle again.
It's not even the fact that I have something like 50 codexes and splat books sat on my shelves across multiple editions, its the fact that's its a lazy money grab from GW.
It costs them very little money to write some updated rules and adjust some points values, change or add the odd keyword and re-cycle a bunch of art. then slap a £25 price tag on it. Compared to actually adding real new content to the game. Yet people continue to lap this up and actually still get excited that they are getting a new codex.

To be clear I'm not anti the idea of a 9th edition, but starting the cycle of codexes yet again has me questioning how much longer I can justify subscribing to this corporate mentality where profit is so far removed from value.

Well, it would appear not now that we've seen the contents of the box.

I guess the Sisters are in the video and featured on the website just to stop the grim darkness of the far future from being such a sausage fest.
