Thanks both - yeah it's a huge project. I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel on the 28mm Warlord now, although I'm sure I've got loads of work left to do. Not least the heraldry - I want to put some Metalica heraldry on the shields and in a few other places. I'm at least going to try to put heraldry everywhere I put it on the AT version, and will be tempted to do more than that given the great blank canvas of a full size warlord. At the minute I'm expecting I'll be trying to freehand to match the heraldry from the AT transfer sheets, just at a much larger size. I expect that will take ages. But I don't mind, because the model calls for it.

On the AT front, I've now pre-ordered the Loyalist Legios book, a Warmaster and the new battleforce set. I couldn't resist the battleforce given the relative savings, coupled with pre-order discount from my favourite indie store. My Metalica collection is pretty big already, so I'm not quite sure what to do with the titans. The Warmaster will obviously add to the Metalica since it doesn't have one yet. As for the battleforce, well, I've only got one Warbringer already, but 4 each of hounds, reavers and warlords. So I guess adding the titans to the Metalica collection would allow for a full 5 titan maniple entirely consisting of one type of titan. A bit of a shame that it's another volcano/apocalypse warlord though. I like that it's the one in the battleforce because it's ordinarily direct only and you can get the sunfury version from indie stores at a discount, but for my own collection 3 out of my 4 warlords are already volcano/apocalypse. This is perhaps a hint that I should get around to buying some of the Forgeworld guns!

Thanks guys! Apologies for not replying to your questions, I'd only just seen the latest couple of posts when I came back to the thread just now to post an update.

Nightbringer4213 wrote:May I ask, what are the yellows/off whites you are using?

Happy to share. They're all airbrushed -

The yellow is primarily VMC Yellow Ochre. A bit of VMC Golden Yellow sprayed lightly into the centre of panels to brighten them up a bit, then a touch of VMC Light Orange around the edges to add a bit of richness, and then a careful light coat of VMA Burnt Umber around the edges to darken and shade.
The white is VMA Off-white, with VMA middlestone sprayed lightly around the edges to shade and 'age' it.
And you didn't ask, but to complete the set:
The black stripes are primarily VMC German Grey, with some Army Painter Matt Black sprayed on the edges
The red is primarily VMC Burnt Cadmium Red, with a bit of VMC Pure Red to brighten the middle of panels and VMC Hull Red to shade around the edges.

I'd love to! Right now I'm being fairly strict with myself about not buying any more forgeworld toys until I finish the Warlord, but I have been contemplating what to go for once I'm done. A pair of Revenants and a Phantom seems like something to aim for, but I'd also like to pick up some of the other Warlord Weapon options, other Imperial titans, Cerastus knights etc. It'll be a tough choice what to do next!

---

Today's update is a start on the heraldry. I'd been quite nervous about this since I was planning to do it freehand and I've never been a very good 'artist' in terms of drawing, 2d painting etc. I can draw non-organic stuff fairly well, but organic shapes, people etc... utterly hopeless. I guess that's the engineer in me showing! Anyway, what I wanted to do for this Warlord is basically recreating a bunch of the heraldry from the AT Metalica transfer sheet, but in a much larger size. I'm particularly apprehensive about tackling the Iron Skull itself, so I decided to start off with what I thought would be the easier choice - the stylised gothic 'M' and laurel wreath. This is on one of the heraldry shields that goes on the shoulder.

The stripes and the basic diamond shape are airbrushed with masking. For the circle of the wreath I basically traced my paintbrush around a round object in order to make sure I had a fairly accurate circle, and then the leaves and the 'M' itself are fully freehand. I'm quite pleased with how it's come out, the only change I'm contemplating is possibly making the mid-tones and the highlights of the 'M' a shade or so lighter just so it's a touch more prominent.

Thanks captain!

I've been continuing with the freehand heraldry. Now it was time to finally get myself pumped up to try the Iron Skull itself. On the AT scale version I'd got two Iron Skulls on the titan - on one of the heraldry shields, and also on the right arm armour panel. I decided the arm one was a bit less prominent and would be the better choice for my first attempt, on the basis that I'd rather mess this one up than the one that goes on the shield. A couple of hours painting today, trying my best to copy the AT decal, and this is the result:

I'm rather pleased with that! I think I'll try to get the one on the shield done fairly soon, while I remember the paints I used. That will be the last heraldry I need to freehand to match the AT version, but I'll need to have a think whether I want to add extra for this full size titan. I'm certainly tempted to put the certificate number on it somewhere.

I've also painted the axe and Opus Titanicus on the knee. A much simpler one, only one colour of paint, but it was still an excercise in slow and steady brushstrokes with plenty of flow improver to try to get the crisp lines.

Thanks very much both! It's been a very interesting experience doing this amount of freehand work, very meticulous and time consuming, rather different to my usual miniature painting experience. But I'm enjoying it and I'm glad I chose to do it. It feels a lot more personal than just printing some big decals or something.

Since my last post, I've done some work on the other heraldry shield and the other piece of arm armour. The shield first, where I painted the other variant of the Legio Metalica Iron Skull symbol. This one in front of the different style of cog, with the crossed bones behind it. As before, I'm over the moon how well this came out. I think the only thing I might have potentially wanted to change is to go a shade or two darker on the cog to better contrast against the skull and bones.

Note that none of this freehand has been varnished yet. The paintwork underneath has been matt varnished, but the freehand bits are a little more satin and reflecting my painting lights a bit more in the photo, so it looks a touch more washed out than it really is. I'll get some better photos once I varnish them.

Next I wanted to do something on the opposite arm piece, after the first one (a couple of posts back) had half of it striped and the other half with an Iron Skull, having the second one plain red felt a bit imbalanced, and it also felt like one of the armour panels best suited to take a bit of freehand. So I had a couple of ideas. On one side, a bit of Latin/High Gothic text in a suitable gothic font. The first line, Metalica, self explanatory. Second line, ferrum voluntatem translates to "iron will". The third line, fidelitas constantus, I picked up from the Wh40k wiki page about the legion where it describes their allegiance as to the Imperium (Fidelitas Constantus), which I assume is supposed to translate as "constant loyalty" or something similar. The final line, Omnissiah Aeternae, the Omnissiah Eternal. I'll admit this is maybe my least favourite of my freehand efforts so far - the text came out a bit uneven, the second line isn't particularly well centred, and everything under "metalica" is in small enough letters that I couldn't properly convey the gothic font. But I think it looks pretty cool all the same.

Then on the other side I decided to paint the logo of the Forge World Metalica itself - the same logo you'd see on Skitarii and Admech forces from the Forge World. It's supposedly stamped on everything that they manufacture, so of course it ought to be at least somewhere on a titan they built...

I'll probably put the certificate number on here, either below the text or above the Metalica logo.

Finally, I thought a photo of the various bits of freehand armour panels together, many hours of work into this lot:

That’s awesome! Though you’ve sown the seed that the big red armour panel would benefit from some freehand too... it’ll be fantastic if great rest is anything to go by

Cheers guys. I decided to stop there with the freehand, didn't want to make it too busy, and also so that it didn't end up taking absolutely forever. Still might be tempted to add some kill markings to the guns or something, and the traditional banner hanging from the waist maybe.

I've been gluing all of the armour panels and extraneous bits that I'd left off for painting, to the point that I've now got a 'complete' assembled Warlord. It's still not finished - I've got some detailing like lenses to do, weathering with streaking enamels and powders, and varnishing, but it was a proud moment just to see the titan standing with all of its armour on! I've only taken a few photos at this stage, I'll make sure to get plenty at a later date once it's fully finished, and get it registered over at TOC.

I also picked up a couple of the new Admech combat patrols on preorder, so now I've got a sizeable force of cogboys to suppor. That was always the plan, but the thread has been entirely titan-centric so far. It's worked out that added to the bits I'd already picked up I've got a fairly decent little Admech selection to work on, 1 Dominus, 2 Enginseers, 1 Titan Tech Priest, 10 Secutarii Hoplites, 30 Skitarii, 6 Kataphrons and 2 Dunecrawlers. I'll try to work on that lot fairly soon. I've also started building the Titanicus Warmaster, currently at the fiddly bit where I'm figuring out exactly how I'm planning on magnetising the various warhound-grade weapons in the shoulders.

But anyway, the big fellow (one photo with the AT version, for scale...):

that is awesome! It must’ve been a great moment when the last piece was glued in place. Good luck with the weathering and I do hope he gets a groin banner for that classic appearance

Wow the freehand is fantastic and the completed titan! It's bloody big isn't it? I think this is one of the few times I've really seen a completed one.

I really like the lens flare on the servo skull plate, very cool touch. Can't wait to see post weathering!

Congratulations on getting it done.

Thanks for the comments guys. I haven't done the weathering yet, I've been a little bit apprehensive about starting just in case I messed it up, but I'm sure it'll come out great when I finally get around to it. Since the last post I have worked on it a little bit though - I decided that the red panels didn't have as much gradient/contrast as I was going for, and so I've sprayed some extra VMC pure red into the middle of the bigger panels. I'm much more pleased with the way they look now, but alas, I don't have photos at the minute.

Recently among other things I've been painting up the new Warmaster titan for Titanicus. I was a bit undecided on the design to start with, but I've come to really like the thing, particularly with this head option. It's really a great kit, and I think this paintjob has come out well -

I've also done the first non-Warlord parts of the 40k scale force, a test of some House Lakar Armigers. I say test, I've already painted the scheme on plenty of Titanicus knights, so I guess this is a test for how the scheme works on 40k scale models. Again I'm quite pleased with it.

Although, I've recently been having further internal debates on whether to concentrate on House Lakar, or whether to just give in to the fluff and go Raven. I saw recently in the Loyalist Legios book they established the Metalica/Kolossi/Raven ties in the Heresy (which I didn't realise was the case when I started this project - I thought Raven didn't come onto the Metalica scene until later), and the Charadon stuff pushes home the Metalica/Raven alliance further. There were a couple of reasons I wasn't planning on picking Raven. For one, I fancied doing a non 'posterboy' faction, and also I'm not the biggest fan of the way Raven have been painted in the Codex/Eavy Metal scheme (but I think I could do a variant that I like better with red gradients a bit more like those I've used on my titans). I'm increasingly finding the fluff ties hard to ignore, it would feel like fluffwise it would be odd to have my knights be from a different house. I might try some Armigers in Raven colours too as another test. I am still fond of Lakar though, and I like the thought of doing some Lamenters and having a marine army and a knight army with closely matching schemes, but they're both canon factions and not just somebody who decided to paint knights in the colours of their marine chapter... I hate how I'm talking myself into doing two knight houses here!

Really belated update here, I finished these quite some time ago but never got around to photographing and uploading - until now. I'll admit this project has been rather on the backburner since I finished the Warlord, I've got so many other projects on the go. But I've now finished my two 40k-scale Questoris Knights for House Lakar, and also painted a squad of Skitarii Rangers and a Techpriest in the Metalica scheme. I'm pretty pleased overall with how they came out.

I've still got a fair few things to assemble and paint for this project, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's quite a long time before I update again. Lately I've been working on Cursed City, and numerous 40k projects - and the one that keeps pulling me back is my Eldar. Because anybody who's followed my threads will know how weak I am for Eldar. But as and when I get around to it, I've got the Precept Maniple battleforce for Titanicus which is currently untouched, a Castellan and a couple of Helverins for 40k Knights, and a bunch of Skitarii, Kataphrons, Dunecrawlers and some Secutarii Hoplites for the Admech. I'll get around to them eventually.

Anyway, the pictures. For the Lakar Knights, they're mostly airbrushed. The fleur-de-lis are from a transfer sheet from the Mighty Brush, which I'm sure is aimed more at Sororitas collections (which I also have, I've just never posted them here...) but they work very well for Lakar knights. I've included a little bit of Metalica heraldry from the AT sheet on each knight to tie them in with my Warlord and show their allegiance.

(Also rather amusingly I've started Primaris Lamenters for 40k, they'll fit rather nicely with the Lakar knights!)

That last pic is awesome! Really gives a sense of how massive the Warlord is when the Knights look tiny. I’m not sure on the legion/household fluff, but the lakar look great on their own and alongside the Titan… another household wouldn’t hurt though right? . Either way, the Lamenters sound fun, with their big brothers/sisters
