@416_SpaceWolves- For the most part I plan on painting them for the first company. Should be like the gravis captain I did a while ago. In other news, I present sgt. Russ. In one particular engagement, he lost an arm to a vicious genestealer. As retribution, he took it's head. And now he wears it for fun.

All the robes/tabards on the indominus guys should fit in very nicely with the DA range.

When I see a bionic arm holding a plasma weapon I just assume the gun did it. Nice to know this guy has a better excuse. You just don’t see that many severed heads hanging off loyalist belts these days. Shame really.

Sgt Russ looks great! Love the touch of the genestealer head.

He’s looking good. Nice work with the Genestealer head. Is that a converted bit or just a bit I don’t recognize?

The head itself is just a genestealer skull, but the ring it's attached to I converted from the top of a flail from my deathwing knights kit.

Speaking of conversions, I didn't really like that the new ancient is holding a skeleton hand, so I gave him a more dark angelsy item instead.

Maybe the genestealer head is just how he tells people he lost the arm...

Very well done on this. Looks just like a decal!

Really neatly done on the freehand JulietTango, I always enjoy a good freehand process!

Nice to see the freehand process broken down into steps. I think it’s one of the more intimidating things painters face. But like most things, it’s just a series of simple steps that add up to something very cool.

Thanks all! I was putting together one of my indomitus bikes today and got some inspiration for the ravenwing. I decided to include my eliminators. The 2nd company is for paving the way for the deathwing as far as I understand, so I figured certain scout units would be appropriate, albeit non-traditional.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Update- hellblasters are finally done! The freehand details are indeed a daunting task, so I find it hard to keep motivated once I get to that stage. For the fire support symbol, it got a bit interesting. I didn't like having the numbers on the shoulder, but without them it seemed too plain. I settled for having a black tactical symbol at the base. I personally didn't start painting SM until the Primaris came out, so I have a bit of a rebel streak when it comes to the codex.

I'm having trouble seeing what's going on with the rifle, color-wise. Is that bare plastic or did you opt for a grey gun-casing?

@brushcommando- I opted for a grey gun casing. Red seemed way too flashy for the role of the model, but black seemed like it would be too bland with the armor also being black. If you've got other ideas I'd be glad to hear them.

Maybe it's just the light in the shot. The grey appears to be unpainted plastic. Had you thought about using caliban green to tie it in with the color scheme? A dark wash to give it more definition might also help. It's also just entirely possible that the photo isn't doing it justice and it looks great in person. Just my two cents. i love the camo cloak.

I was thinking the same thing. The grey you went with looks exactly like bare plastic. A good wash would fix that right up.

The grey is mechanicus standard grey and it actually does have a wash. I'll try the green and see how it goes. I was kinda on the fence with the grey anyway.

Nice progress on the army. The freehand chapter symbols are very well done, you've certainly got more patience than me, I only did one on an old model then gave up for the rest of the army. Only problem with primaris dark angels is the lack of robes, hoping for some upgrade kits in the future

@maharg- thanks! I'm pretty proud of my freehand work. But as for the patience, that's debatable. Having the blog has actually really helped me stay focused.

@brushcommando and kavika- here's an updated pic for the eliminator. The gun is caliban Green overlayed with DA contrast.

General update- with the hellblasters finished, these four are currently on my to do list until I get more primed. If there's anything in particular you'd like to see, I've got reivers, aggressors, inceptors, a redemptor dreadnought, a repulsor, and a second intercessor squad that need painted. All are in various stages. I tend to wander in my projects.

The green on the eliminators gun looks better I think. The contrast over it looks a bit lost though, I’d try Nuln oil to bring out some definition to the parts. That stuff is like magic!

You need to be careful with plain black, white, or grey. Mostly grey. With black/white it can be hard to get shadeing/highlights, so it often looks unfinished. As a lot of people prime with those colors, it flags in people’s heads as not painted. Grey gets the same as bare plastic.

What does your army need next? Any partial units? FOC slots empty? Roles unfilled? When was the last time you got them together for an army shot? I find these things help steer me on what to paint next.

I wanna see the redemptor.

@gobert- I haven't used nuln oil before, but I'll have to get some and try it!

@brushcommando- the redemptor is now slated for paint! Ideas for the name?

@Nevelon- thanks for the tips. I think that's what I'll do. I've got some models to assemble and then I'll take inventory with an army shot. Also hoping to get some priming done as well.

Nev has been on dakka a while and is always sharing his knowledge with the new-bloods. Name it after him. I mean what better way to reward a lifetime of work than by interring someone into a coffin-tank on legs and dooming them to an eternity of endless war? Maybe ancient Nevareal should join your ranks.

Edit: And since I didn't say so earlier, the green looks much better on the gun. The only other suggestion I might add would be to switch the binoculars to a red lense and thus preserve your green-black-red color palette.

Update- Almost ready for the Army shot, but in the meantime I've attempted to improve my methods. Sgt Kavika is finished and ready to be based. For this one I attempted edge highlighting the green and black. The black is highlighted with mechanicus standard grey and the caliban green more subtly with waaagh flesh. After that I pinwashed nuln oil into the recesses. This is my first go at edge highlights so C and C is more than welcome.

Had a quick scroll through and very nice work on all those freehand symbols!
As for the edge highlights, they are a very good start (mine still look this way after 3 years ), keep at it!
And a tip for guns, because I hate edge highlighting, I just give mine a wash and than pick out all those "buttons" and "nubbins" with another color (perhaps a dull silver with your scheme). Maybe worth a try.

That’s really good edge highlighting for a first time! I find the way to make it look good is going back to fix mistakes. I’m sure some can do it right first time, but not me!

I’ll agree with the others; great start! I dislike edge highlights, but it really helps things like the black. It’s also one of those things that usually looks like crap when you zoom in, but at the normal arm’s length tabletop view, all the roughness just fades and you end up with just the effect.
