I'm working on a squat army currently, but I voted Space Marines. They are my first army, and my favorite army.

Oh my favorite & what I'm currently playing is not the same thing.
I've loved the IG since the day their Codex dropped in 2e & I have many thousands of dollars worth of them. All sorts of them. But atm they're all in storage.
What I'm playing is SW/DA/& 100% SM Dreadnaughts - because those were the forces most easily dug out of storage for some 8e gaming and I haven't dug any deeper into the vault - yet.
What I'm currently building is about 100PL worth of GSC for some Crusade action....

Death Guard. I liked their style and background since 5th Edition and they're always fun to play. Not so much into the tentacles on their new models, but aside these the new models are great, too, because MKIII is awesome.

Definitely orks.

Then Adepta Sororitas, Drukhari and Space Wolves as long as they keep their wolfy wolfy vibe. If they became just some SM once again I'd have no love for them anymore.

Anything else I may like or dislike but those listed above are the factions and models I love.

So, 150 votes into the poll there are few things I didn't expect. The "big" factions old CSM, Marines, Orks, Guard and Eldar are the most loved ones by players. Not having horrible codices and wide model ranges probably also helps.
Sisters being so far up is interesting, but not surprising considering the new model range and codex.
These are followed by a second tier containing most of the more exotic factions: xenos, custodes, AdMech and death guard
The last tier are highly specialized armies with small model ranges like knights, harlequins and GK. I guess you either like the one thing these do, or you don't.
Thousand sons are somewhere in between tier 2 and 3.

The only real surprise is that apparently no one likes daemons.

Daemons suffer from bad rules and bad design for 40k.
Bad rules design aswell.

actually for most of their history they did.

Well I was asked wich army is my favorite.
Sadly for my Khorne demons, even though I love every model in my case, that's just not them. So no vote. But it's still a long way to the bottom of my list....

Is this really a surprise though? Since 3rd edition I've always heard players complaining about daemons not being a proper 40k army but a fantasy one.

That comment was hyperbole, of course

I just was surprised, because back when I started there were many players who had daemons armies as their primary armies and often played both games with them. I would have expected for them to have at least a similar level of votes as the xenos factions have, especially since model support hasn't been a big issue for them.
Looking back to those people - most don't play anymore and those who do either moved to the corresponding CSM or to completely different armies.

I'd have a tie for two. SM and Nids. They both just have so many different ways/units/styles/etc/etc. You can get yourself a big collection of each and never really have to play the same game twice

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

I love the idea of a demon army and have a lot of models. they just don't seem to have a full tool kit.

honestly they need some shooting to do anything in 9th. outside of horrors no other troop can even shoot. even they are 18" assault 2 str 3 0AP D1.

put another way compared to chaos space marines the demons just seem 1 dimensional on the field and as stated more fit for age of sigmar than the 40k table

The dark behind the eyes.

I'll go with Dark Eldar, though "great rules and constant model support" is becoming increasingly difficult to even imagine for them.

Still, I enjoy their lore, and while their range is criminally small, most of the 5th edition kits are still really nice. I think they're a great balance of being reasonably detailed, whilst also being good for customisation. Only thing that makes me a little sad in that area is that the claw-shaped Agoniser was removed. I thought it looked a lot cooler than the whip (would have at least liked it for the Archon, even if others used whips).

Craftworlds, with the second choice being Tyranids.

The Asuryani are pretty much the level-headed good guys( with a mean streak ) and the Nids are the ultimate threat that no faction can afford to ignore.

The rest of the factions are merely spare ones at a wedding.

Visually I love the Knights. They're just awesome. I don't really like how they've been implemented in game however.

I had a couple waiting to be built a while back and sold them, and kind of regret it now.

For Xenos I like the Tyranids the best. They're the most alien of the aliens.

Easy. My first army:

NIGHT LORDS!

And those guys were cool long before ADB wrote the corresponding novels.

Ah, another great faction comes to mind:
CATACHANS!

Those guys prove that even the grimdark future can't overshadow the 80s.

It is hard to choose cause their is a couple of factions that I like. I suppose if I had pick one it would be Tyranids, Genestealer Cults or Tau right now. Though Imperial Guard, Orks, Necrons, Drukahri & both sides of Astartes have interesting aspects to them. Some more so than others & not every interesting aspect about them is a good one. The rest not mentioned I just don't care for. And my interested between the above factions shift around based on what conversion ideas, parts/bits & fanfiction lore I currently have brewing in my head.

The Space Locusts, the Infected Hybrids & the Hoofed Blueberry Aliens.

Well, Nurgle Daemons are my second army, but I have to say they're really just a supplement to my DG. They simply lack the versatility and even model wize I'm not really a fan of Beasts of Nurgle.

Guards, my first lve as far as 40K goes, especially because of the tanks.

But after five years of full guard and increasingly getting into the detals of the fluff I've come to like many amries a lot, such as SoB, Dark Eldars, or Genestealer cults. But Guard will always be number one!

To be fair "Ynnari" right now is just playing one of the aeldari factions with a faction-specific character.

Difficult choice, but tyranids. If I was forced into a single faction forever it would be nids

I'm painting Khorne daemons at the moment but they're pretty limited in unit selection and play style, and I don't like the blood throne and skull cannon models

I love orks but find them a lot of work to paint. I'd like to do a small, elite army of them but I stink at painting metals

CSM are still my all time main faction but the model range is in a bad place for me at the moment. A mix of model scales, ugly HQ's, ugly daemon vehicles have put me off. I prefer when they were spiky marines with daemon princes and possessed

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

It's always been Night Lords for me since day one. I love how they were renegades before the Heresy even started, just for being the monsters that the Corpse God made them to be, no chaos influence needed, thank you very much. I also love how they continue to shun the Chaos Gods, and view those who worship them as weaklings and fools, and how they have problems with authority, because they're just a bunch of psychotic former hive gangers, even to the point of telling Abaddon to go pound sand when he calls them to join his Black Crusades when it doesn't benefit them. Love their whole Vlad Tepes in space vibe too. They've always been the odd man out of The Legions, and that's how I like it.

Interesting stuff - if we group up the various Eldar factions, they take a total 13% of the vote, so closer to the Marines conglomerate than at first glance. You could easily make an argument for Drukhari being as different from Craftworlds as Grey Knights are from other Chapters - but the numbers are still much closer even with that accounted for.
Meanwhile, grouping the Traitor Legions together actually puts them on top with 17%...!

This just makes me wish the various loyalist Chapters had been split out - we'd still be able to see the total number, while getting a picture of popularity within the group.

Well, since I doubt we see much movement in the numbers any more, I can spill my motivation behind the poll without worrying about influencing it.

Multiple people have claimed in other threads that marines are getting so much attention because they are by far the most popular faction and therefore GW rightfully showers them in releases to make the most money. Therefore they way I created this poll was primary driven by how GW releases things currently - a new primaris kit is very likely to be available to all the loyal marine armies except grey knights, while a CSM release is not going to made available to DG or TS and no matter how many craftworld eldar kits are done, it won't help drukhari at all. Very few releases since 8th should be available to more than one entry on the poll.
So, while grouping them thematically makes sense, when looking at who got which releases, it does not. It's also likely that most supplements would only have gotten 2-3 votes which would have made calculating the numbers a pain in the rear armor.

The poll results draw a very different picture of what people are claiming, and frankly I would have expected much more marine votes - at the time of writing we have 88% of the voters saying that they would prefer to spend their time and money on a release that is not a box of primaris marines.
Even assuming that dakka is not representative of the entire gaming community, over 250 votes is still a lot and it's not like that community with less grumpy veterans, orks and grumpy ork veterans will get a completely different result since the numbers clearly seem to correlate with the variety and options available of those armies. The more exotic and focused an army, the less votes it has, while armies with many play styles and wide model ranges have the most votes. The three tiers I described in an earlier post have remained intact despite the number of votes having essentially doubled.
