Amen! To force myself to paint something for any reason- even to 'just finish it' is to find reasons to do everything/anything except paint. It only took my 40 years to figure that out.

Just found this blog/thread and really enjoy everything I've seen. The diversity of work is entertaining and the quality (plus tips as to how it was done) highly enjoyable and useful.

Not sure I have a favorite- everything has strong interest to recommend it. So I'll settle for saying "show me more and I'll decide".

Rock on!

Thank you for the kind words.

Wow, i am actualy posting here again.

Jokes aside, i have had a year pause from the painting, the will to paint was simply not there. While i have been doing some painting over the past 4 months, nothing connected me to painting, i could not finish even a simple product box, until now!

I have found inntrest in naval games, and while i have picked up 3 systems over the past summer, i found one with a faction that have a way of painting that i can actualy finish, currently there is only small details left, so i know this box will be finished.
Game is Dystopian wars from Warcradle and the Faction is Commonwealth (allso know as the russians and their friends)

I know that we in scandi/eu has a grim reality now, but i belive we should be adults and politicaly oriented enugh to seperate Real Life and toys! (lets face it, the minis we collect are toys for adults =P)

The product is the Borodino Battlefleet set and was one of the first products released in Dystopian wars 3rd edition, (prev two editions belonged to Spartan Games) and contains one battleship, two cruisers and four frigates. The battleships is resin, rest is plastic. The game does not use bases for their ship models.
This will be Tabletop Quality paint level ONLY. It will be fast, and using the common "cheating ways" to get a visualy looking result that looks very good on an arm lengths distance. I will try and show as many stage pictures as possible.
One downside of the game is that is only about two years old, and as sutch many of the first wave product do not have assembly guide in the box, one have to head over to warcradle`s website to find pdf files of the assembly instruction.

So this is the content of the box assembled, weapon turrets for cruisers+battleship are swappable so they will be painted seperatly and as the last part of the ship. Apart from the battleship that is a solid chunk of resin, the plastic ships are hollow and very light. I suggest gluing a steel nut or any other wight material to the inside of the plastic ships for some heft to them. The 3.0 models are larger then the models Spartan Games made and they will not look good alongside Spartan ship models. I belive the scale is "hero" 1/1200, but i could be wrong.

After a soapwash to get the industrial and human grease of them comes the primer. For this paint job that primer will be black.

Ok, home again, now to showcase something other then black primer.

In the fluff, this faction was described as "the white navy". The image on the box however showcases a bright silver force and while the sheen of bright silver in the sun might look like white, i am going to paint my ships white.
So to do this as simple and quick as possible i will be using rattlecan for this stage.

I began with Grey Seer from GW. They way i did this was to hold the can at approx 40 cm distance, at an angle of 70-80 degrees and did 1 sec controlled bursts. i think the term is called "dusting"
The intension is to NOT cover the entire ship from top to bottom in grey, but to create natural shading and highlight as the paint hit the high spots of the model. It is the same tought prosess as zenitial highlight with airbrush.

This is the result of that:

As you can see if you click the image, i have natural graded shading.

then i did the exact same thing with white colour rattlecan from vallejo, i have never liked GWs white rattlecan spray.

And this is how that came out.

This is basicly 50-60% of the total paintjob of the ship completed.

But now for the REAL cheating; black oil shading! Wow, did that make for a stunning effect or not? Shure some of you more talented painters would have used grey, but i want sharp cartoon contrast lines, kinda like in the days when we we all did black lining (aka turn of the millennium)

There is lots to be said about oil shading, it is an old way, historical gamers has been using it since the 80`s if not earlier, and there is no correct way of doing it, it is all down to feel. You have to experiment with how mutch thinner/white spirit to use. The more you do oil shading the better you get at it. Allso it realy helps to coat the models with gloss varnish before you do the shading as the model becomes slick and it helps the paint going into the cracks.

That said, what you see are worked on models. When the oil wash is applied it is a messy hell. After about 45-60 min you wipe off excess oil with a cotton stick or a piece of cloth damped in whinner/white spirit and in general clean up the model. It is oil paint, even in a diluted state it takes days to dry, so you have ample of time, and if you remove too mutch, just apply more and rins and repeate. Seal the models whit a layer of varnish when done.

Turrets on the frigs and the smoke stacks was painted boltgun metal before the oil wash.

Next step, deck. keeping it light tone and 1 layer only so contrast aggros dunes.

Cleaning up the white from dunes spill over and then on to the final detail stages. Gold crest is done with retributior armor + a wash of seraphim sepia, red details is contrast blood angles red over retributior armor.

Only thing left is the pipes. I cant find a colour that works so far. My brass/copper dont offer too mutch change over the gold and a dark tone paint just dont work. Have to think for a while on that...

And there it is, project is finished, a quick tabletop ready starter fleet for Dystopian Wars.
I went with Charcoal for the pipes, brass did not realy offer a difference compared to the gold and bronse just faded in with the white.
