Thanks for the very nice comments everyone! Made me super happy.

Okay, here's something just slightly different for a change. I've been trying to organize a game with a friend for quite a while now. I had my own ambitions in trying out the new edition of Warhammer 40k, since that's what I've been recently building armies for (did some Orks last summer, Nurgle CSM through the fall, and these Chaotic Overlords for the last two months). But my friend suggested Necromunda. It's been my favourite game for the last 25 years, so why the hell no?!

So just to tie things together a bit, I decided to build up another Necromunda gang that could also double up as a unit of Chaos Cultists for my big 40k Overlords. After a quick rummage through my endless bits boxes, I came across four metal Servitor miniatures I recently bought from somebody at the local miniature trading group at Facebook. These would form the basis of the gang. Add in some Genestealer & Chaos Cultists, Skitarii and Space Marine bits and whatnot. Didn't remember that converting metal miniatures was so tedious...

As I envision these dudes to be kind of reanimated golems, I felt something else than just ordinary human heads would be in order. Maybe more animal heads or skulls, much like my proxy CSM troopers or Centauroid Bikers have?

Then a tiny piece of lore formed up in my head. The big Overlords would always decapitate their victims (and slaves), then mix up and swap body parts and heads in between different species. The most succesful and strongest ones would live up to become these CSM troopers and Centauroids for example. But the weak and miserable ordinary humans wouldn't usually be able to cope with such a massive operations. They would need other things to stay up. So the Overlords would insert these big magical orbs of unholy powers for their heads and bind them to their evil will. Enter evil laughter.

For the Necromunda purposes, I armed the gang quite well. The leader has plasma gun and an axe (I'll hopefully find a power axe for him some day...). The two heavies got a flamer and a heavy bolter. Four gangers all have a basic weapons. I gave them a varied mix to personalize individual gangers and help differentiating between them in the gaming situation. So there's a boltgun, a shotgun, an autogun and some weird Skitarii gun that I think can be played as a lasgun, a hunting rifle or even a needle sniper rifle if I ever happpen to find one. The trio of juves got the usual close combat weapons, with the all time personal favourite load out of two knives. Everybody in the gang also has a holster, so can be armed up with any kind of pistol. Enter even more evil laughter. I might still sculpt in some eyelids and/or hoods around their magical orb heads.

Thanks! Very glad you like these.

So the unit of Cultists and/or another Necromunda gang is soon done. Only have to paint their bases, and maybe do some minor touch ups and varnishes. Really loving their occult robot special ops scuba diver hunchback looks.

Finally started work on these two Heldrakes. I've had those toy ufo aeroplanes waiting for quite some time already. Not sure if I'll do anything super fancy with these. Just sculpt in more demonic shapes and textures, concentrating on their big faces, then add in a few gun barrels and tubing.

This Khorne Lord of Skulls is just not getting ready. So many places to add in more things and interesting details. The face is close to being done now, as are the weapons. I'd still like to add more bulk to the arms. Added in tiny nails and bolts to hold the stretched out flesh pieces of the face and jaw in place. Gross / lovely.

Thanks RobertsMinis!

Here's some more.
Just felt that this Khorne Lord of Skulls needs more bulk, detail and generally all around chaotic vibes. So have been sculpting in more demonic faces that emerge from everywhere, hooked claw-like appendages, cabling, bolts and rivets. Also filled the mouth with skulls that this gigantic demonic engine drinks all the blood from to fuel itself. Then there's a couple of Bloodletter skulls to push the vibe in even more Khornate direction. But I still don't know what to do with the wheels. Should they be left like that, and painted dark and dirty to not draw attention away from everything else? Or maybe sculpt in some demonic textures and glue in dozens of spikes? One thing to consider is also the handling of this model. Not that many places to lift it easy & safe while painting and gaming, if the wheels get filled with tiny detail and spikes. Anyways, I'll soon get to glue in the teeth, the arms, the shoulder pads and then finish sculpting around those areas. Gotta start thinking about the painting!

Two Heldrakes get basic shapes on. Toy aeroplanes, paint & glue bottle caps, Lego Bionicle parts, cheap hobby clay and mixes of Green Stuff and Milliput.

Me, watching you add layers upon layers of sculpted demon faces and weird bits and sticking it all together with actual nails:

Lots to love MM On the wheel situation, I think you could be forgiven for not adding ~100 spikes to the rims, thinking about how relatively low spike the rest of the army is, and that your RED paint scheme would probably benefit from some understated wheels.

Also! those heldrakes are extremely cute, interested to see how big they are!

Thank you Not Online!!!

Also thank you Boss Salvage! Your point about low spike count throughout the army was definitely spot on. I was maybe too close to see it, but makes just perfect sense. So no spikes on the wheels! I'll be gluing small amounts of sand/grass/debris on the wheels, to kind of emulate the bases that all the other dudes in the army have, and sneak in some of the green & khaki colors I think are very important for the color scheme as a whole.

Anyways... An hour here, another there. These dooders are still taking shape. The Khorne Lord of Skulls got its teeth and arms finally fixed in place. I also tripled the amount of visible brain tissue hanging out on the back of its head. Made shoulder pads from pieces of gothic ruins, chopped toy Easter eggs, tiny beads and Green Stuff. They resemble the legendary RTB01 beakie Space Marine heads, which wasn't intentional first, but fully appropriate. Added in two protruding curved holders for extra skulls on the back side. Initial idea was to attach these to the models head, maybe on the sides to accompany the curved horns. But the head would have been too busy then, and I still wanted more mass on the rear half. There's also a few more sculpted demonic skull faces emerging from all around. Dust caps on the bigger wheels are belly armour pieces from Age of Sigmar Ogors.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Heldrakes are getting some jet engines, exhaust pipes and cabling on them. I used Blue Stuff to make a few crappy copies from pieces of Ork jump pack, a Nurlesque fan and a cylinder shaped thing with tiny holes on one end I found from street. I guess it's from broken earphone. I only had one original of each of these, and as I like them a lot, just had to do the copies. Along with them, there's more super glue caps and Lego bits added in to make these things look like very fast and unpredictably moving scary fliers.

Some time ago I bought a box of 100 casino chips for a few euros only. They are solid, heavy and exactly 40mm in diameter, so perfect for bases. But who would need such bases in this army? Terminators! For sure I ain't going to include a bog standard unit of those elite troops, and wanted to build something different. The first idea was to do kind of elongated versions from the classic hunchback Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Warriors, basically by adding an extra torso and set of arms on top of the usual build. They could hold huge axes with two hands, and bolters on the other two. And classic 40k Terminator back banners should become a thing again.

While looking for the CW bits from my multitude of boxes, I came across an Ogor body, also from the WHFB / AoS fantasy range. He would be the units champion. I'll be using the Ogor heads for the whole unit, add bulgy eyes and inverted CW heads for weird jaw-claws, and then sculpt in more stitched-together demonic flesh tissue. Here's a starting point with the champion. Still wondering whether to add Chaos Spawns arm (or something) protruding from the hole in the models belly.

So the unit of brutish Terminators is forming up here. I'll be sculpting in more of the good old hunchback Chaos Warrior types of armour plates on them. Faces will become huge and bloated sacks of stitched together flesh, bulgy eyes and horns sprouting out from unusual places.

The Heldrakes have been covered in yet more fleshy tissue and teeth. Also started building up their arms. Other has got pincer types of curved claws made from old plastic Chaos Warrior helmets, while the other will be having more humanlike fingers. I decided that I didn't like that much of the other ones face, especially around the eye area. So I sculpted some stitched lines to cover the eye sockets, and consider giving it just a single big eye on its forehead.

The Khorne Lord of Skulls finally got some primer and dribbly red basecoat on. I actually gave it four coats of Army Painters Matt Black primer in hopes I won't rub any of it off while handling it when painting.

Thanks again mates!

Have been doing more sculpting on the Heldrakes and some basic painting on the Lord of Skulls. But I'll post pics of them later when there's a bit more progress. However here's the unit of Terminators taking shape! From the start I knew these Terminators would become horrible monstrosities. They were always going to have big ugly faces with bulging eyes and horns protruding from their jaws. They were going to wear suits of chaos armour, and have extra arms to hold their mighty axes while missing arms elsewhere and just have their guns sprout out from their sides. This was the initial "plan". I didn't know the unit would turn out to look like THIS.

Very happy you like these little weirdos!

I have to say it has been a bit daunting task to paint this huge demonic engine of Khorne the Blood God. Sure it's big, at least bigger than any miniature I have painted before. And crammed with weird detail that's sometimes hard to decide how to paint. Is it iron, gold, glossy red, sickly skin or something else? Should I just leave certain areas bare and add black and white checker patterns later? Maybe cover it all with blood, transfers or painted runes? Paint the wheels with only very understated dark greys, or make them dirty with lumps of ground and grass textures to kind of match the bases of the other miniature in this army project? Are all (or just some) of the skulls bone colored, or maybe even bright bloody demonic reds? Black horns & teeth? Magenta brain tissue & gums? And very importantly, in which order should I apply any of these colors to not make other steps unnecessarily harder by accident?

Now I've enjoyed every step of the painting of this beast so far, but it has always been a bit difficult to get started. I feel it's because of the uncertainty of it all. Not absolutely sure which step to take next and how to take it. I've been doing this particular project (an army of Chaotic Overlords) for over three months now (and enjoyed everything about it!), but might need something else to do for a change. I've come to accept that these kinds of 2-4 month periods for any army project I have going on are very much normal and okay. I wouldn't even call it fatigue at this point. No need to feel bad about not continuing forever. I've managed to do a lot of assembling, sculpting, converting and painting with this group of big guys that already has started to feel like a proper army. Just have to catch a breath for a few days and see if I'll want to keep working with these guys and maybe even finish them before moving onto something else. Anyways, here's the WIP Lord of Skulls along with a duo of Heldrakes that are almost done with the sculpting phase now.

This project is simply amazing. The level of creativity, uniqueness, and weird creepiness is truly inspired. I have loved watching the journey from a few blocky kids’ toys into something grotesque and covered in detail. All the models on here are interesting and original. You should be proud!

But I have to ask, did you not end up using the Christmas elf or did I just overlook it in that pile of details and tentacles and spikes?
