I have two things to say:

BS4 Lascannons in the Vet Squads makes them Target Number 1 for enemy shooters. Vets cost 75 points, Deep Strike with Meltas or Plasmas, kill something, and then die. They do not attempt to be line squads, as they will be picked out and annihilated.

"More thoughts: what are thoughts on dropping a vet squad and reducing the others to take a Grey Knight Grandmaster with a psychic hood to mitigate the risk of deep striking boo librarians? It costs me a scoring unit, but adds a bit of HtH punch protection."

And what if you face an army with a lot of Daemons? You just gave them all Sustained Attack by taking that single GK Hero. Do yourself a favour and take an Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor Lord w/Psychic Hood and Liber Heresius. This gives you an Ld10 Psychic Hood, and you can pick your table edge most of the time.

Not to argue, HBMC, but I'm still pondering Veteran line squads.

Why, you ask?

Well:
1) For less than +50% of cost of a "normal" las/plas line squad (ignore the pfist for the moment - I'd drop that, personally), he gets Infiltrate, BS 4, and 2 bonus plasma guns.

2) Everything counts in large amounts - 3 squads (30 guys) are hard enough to silence, outside of assault, that many less shooty armies will have to struggle to drop them.

3) Infiltrate and Elite helps mitigate damage - they're placed late (or last) in the deployment phase, meaning very little of his opponent's firepower is still waiting in the wings. They can often be placed in such a way as to prevent overly-dangerous foes (e.g., 4xHB Dev squads) from ever seeing them.

I'd like to see some games run with them - en masse, I think it would work.

Doctrines:
Iron Discipline, Rough Riders, Conscripts, Heavy Weapon platoons, and Veterans.

No room for drop troops unless i drop one. May drop Veterens to take only one squad, but the Cannoness, and then have 260 points to get another platoon or heavy weapon platoon.

Decisions, decisions...

If you drop Veterans, drop them completely - a single line squad-style Vet squad is quickly dead.  You could take a suicide squad for deep striking melta action, but that'd reduce your line firepower significantly.

Remember, as you tweak the list, to keep your body count high, as well as gun count.  Heavy Weapons squads add impressive firepower, but little durability.  And make some movement trays, pre-spaced to 2" coherency, for deployment and early movement.  Make it harder for Walter.
