Something along the lines of a sdkfz 231 6 rad, would be neat, perhaps with a more skeletal design like the old Tauros venator. Otherwise a more sci-fi influenced vehicle like Mass Effect's M29 Grizzly might be a good direction.

I'd rather they didn't do something with Mass Effect's aesthetic - this is the Guard, our tanks are as blocky as our heads (and twice as hard). That said, I'll throw my vote behind a scout car as well - Sentinels and Hellhounds are nice, but Sentinels are a bit whiffy and only have M9" and Hellhounds are for close assaults. I'd like it if we had something that could do flanking ranged fire support as well.

Also I just like Salamander Scout vehicles, so if we could bring those back with actual weapon and wargear options, that'd be grand.
Spoiler:
And no, me wanting them back has nothing to do with me starting a massive project to convert three of the beauties LESS THAN A MONTH BEFORE GW PUT THE SALAMANDER COMMAND IN THE HQ SLOT WHERE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALL ALONG AND THEN FETHING MURDERED BOTH VEHICLES VIA LEGENDS WHAT THE HELL GW

Well I finished converting a Ridgerunner into a Salamander Scout just one month before it got put into Legends. That's also in addition to two Leman Russ Annihilators.

Oh well, there's people in my area who have been trying to get a 4th ed game going since before the pandemic, so there's a chance of them getting some kind of use.

I actually like the idea of the ridgerunner scout car, might need to convert one. Don't care if it's legends.

A scout car would be perfect for the Tallarn (they've got Desert Rats DNA along with the more obvious mujahideen/Lawrence of Arabia influence), and a space-Jeep would be a great fit for Catachans. And I really liked the Elysian buggies.

I'm just not sure what would substantially differentiate it from a Sentinel, which already seems to provide that mobile firebase role.

I liked the trifecta of Hellhounds, Sentinels, and Rough Riders. That gave you three units to choose from with distinct roles and identities. Hellhounds as your light tanks, Sentinels as mobile fire support (in 'scout' and 'walking pillbox' flavors), and Rough Riders as melee.

I wouldn't be opposed to Rough Riders coming back on motorcycles, with lances intact. Or maybe resurrecting the jump pack Guardsmen from the Rogue Trader days. Something that is nominally infantry and provides a fast assault role.

Yep and Marines had jet bikes.

I'd love to see Rough Riders back, with a Steel Legion rider option. Bikes something like the GSC bikes would be good also. Back in the day Citadel Journal had an article with a scratchbuilt/converted armoured car, something like that'd work also.

For a force that is arguably inspired by/based on various real world armies at various times of history, all mashed together, there doesn't seem to be many options in the Guard! Being the massive force they are supposed to be you would have thought there'd be more "stuff". Space Marines, the supposedly elite smaller force that acts as a sharp instrument, the opposite to the Guard's blunt hammer, actually seem to have more "stuff"!

Roughriders all the way. Always loved them, always will. They were a huge modeling oppurtunity, since the galaxy must be full of exotic beasts to use. (I know, not something GW is encouraging anymore, but I am old) As long as marines carry chainswords there will be room for cavalry and lances in 40k. To argue one fits and the other doesn't is to argue individual levels of what breaks the "reality" of the game.

I do like the idea of a one-man helicopter just for cool modeling etc, although the sentinel fills a very similar role.

I'd also vote for an "infiltrating" unit with an "ambush" type of ability. Say a basic troop slot with the same options moved to FA and maybe only revealed when it shoots for the first time, and can't charge. I say this because I agree with the above poster and his assessment of "infiltrating" units in the current small boards, very fast movement, MEGA-firepower game. Infiltrate is just a different deplyment at beginning of the game, and doesn't fit my own feeling for what they should do.

Keeping the hobby side alive!

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage.

I fall on the side of let's have all the options. Guard are many different armies and the galaxy is a big place. I don't even need models, just the rules (I know that's fantasy land, but there's always house rules).

Rough riders, always a fun time. Never failed to provide death and glory. Moving them to legends was lazy. Plastic Thunderbird? I'd love it, but it suffers the same problem the Valkyrie does, it's fething huge. Especially as the trend seems to be smaller vehicles. Some form of tankette could be used, but it would be overlapping with the Chimera variants. I was always bummed they never did the transport version of the Tauros that was mentioned in the fluff.

Yeah, ironically enough Salamander's going Legends was a very freeing experience. Before, I would have a Legends'd unit or option in a list and I'd feel like I should find something from the main 'dex to approximate it. Now I feel like I can just take what I want because feth it, it's probably all going Legends at some point.

I've got a few ideas:

AM:
- Move Ratlings to Fast Attack. Fast Attack doesn't have to just be literally fast models, but could also represent units that were forward deployed. The scouts or vanguard before the battle.

- Some kind of forward deploying infantry squad. Something like the old Elysian sniper team, maybe give them the ability to call down an artillery strike like a Master of Ordinance. Alternatively, some kind of grav-chute capable Guardsmen that aren't Scions.

- Bring back Rough Riders I definitely agree with, or just port Death Riders into the codex and make their data sheet more balanced. Either/or is fine.

- Bring back Salamander Scout Tanks as an alternative to Sentinels. Give it 14 inch move. Maybe an overcharged engines stratagem for automatic 6 inch advance. Around 75 - 85 points.

- Some kind of armoured car would be nice. Basically a wheeled alternative to a land speeder, and a heavier vehicle than the Space Marine ATV. Give it similar weapons to the Taurox Prime, weaker battle cannon, a gatling cannon, and some kind of AT weapon.

- Sentinels need to have better damage output. I think their stat-line is fine but point for point they don't do much compared to other tanks. I'd treat them like heavy infantry and make their heavy weapons the same cost as infantry ones. Basically a 5 point drop to their points ceiling. I'd like to see multi-lasers become heavy 4. I would also like to see storm bolters, heavy stubbers, or a hunter-killer missile be an upgrade option. Basically you can only choose one of the three, you can't have a pintle and a hunter-killer.

It also seems like heavy stubbers are becoming heavy 4 across the board. So a 40 point Sentinel might be pretty nice with a heavy 4 multi-laser and heavy 4 heavy stubber.

MT:
The MT currently have no fast attack options and need something. I'd actually prefer to give them the old Elysian vehicles as they fit their theme. Basically give them all BS3+ and make them MT vehicles, so that's the Drop Sentinel, and both Tauros' vehicles.
