So it's just garden variety coastal elitism. I didn't realize that wasn't strictly a North American phenomenon. FWIW (and speaking of denial), there seems to be an exodus of people and businesses from coastal utopias like California to Texas specifically so it's unlikely that it's one step removed from hell like you referenced and may actually have some of that "exceptionalism" instead.

If it was about "good" or "awesome" then you'd be watching Votoms or Dougram or Crusher Joe and not robotech. :p

Maybe because Zeta is 1) 35 years old, 2) it has Kamille, which is still one of the most annoying characters ever, and 3) why couldn't you do both?

This comment basically nails it as to why Robotech is what it is to so many. As a kid in the early 80's when Robotech debuted, it blew my pre-teen mind and is the one show I can point to as the start of my anime fandom. Of course, as I grew older and learned more about the background and history of the show and consumed ever increasing amounts of anime, Robotech in retrospect has not aged well and I see it for the bastard son of Macross that it is, along with a seething resentment for how Harmony Gold has pretty much blocked all subsequent Macross series out of North America.

Accordingly, while this deal puts a way forward for the gates to be unlocked, I am skeptical we will see a flood of the Macross library suddenly licensed for streaming in North America as I am sure Harmony Gold's greed is going to set the price artificially high that Sony (owner of Funimation and Crunchy Roll*), Netflix, Hi Dive, etc. are not going to bother if the price for the rights is not competitive with the other offerings like Gundam, etc.

IMHO Harmony Gold (and Big West) waited too long to make Macross a sign post property in North America and while this news may generate some buzz and nostalgia for those like me, it is now one property/IP amongst many that does not always compare favorably to what is more readily and consistently available today.

Because 1.) Age means near nothing on an anime, even if the animation has not aged that well as it is the content that matters, 2.) Kamille is an autistic child with a heart of gold. He's man, and Kamille after all is a man's name, 3.) Why waste time, my life is busy enough.

There's no account for taste, that's for sure. But as to why, maybe stuff surprises you. I personally found Gundam Z "ok" at its best point, entirely forgettable at the middle and horrid whenever Kamille was on the screen. Most certainly nowhere near the real gems of the franchise, even speaking only of the UC.

If I wanted to watch ugly mechs I'd watch the Battletech cartoon on loop, all 3 episodes of it.

I would, and boy have I, argued that the Destiny is so bad it reflexively makes it harder to enjoy Seed. I literally can't watch it without remembering how bad Destiny is so the series, which I'd rate as just 'ok' on the Gundam scale (Freedom's cool), is not a series I can really watch and enjoy.

Somehow in my travels I've only seen one episode of any Gundam ever.

Mid 90s, international flavor theme, the American Gundam looked like a football player and his shoulder pads became knuckles for punching. Dutch Gundam turned into a windmill. Chinese Gundam was awesome.

No idea what the season was called but it was THE season when I was a student so the toys and posters were everywhere.

G Gundam. It was an acid trip of a show. The Gundam pilots have horses, who have their own mobile suits, that the Gundams ride into battle. I gak you not XD

It's the Gundam that is easily "so bad it's good" from start to finish. I think the dub is actually superior because the over the top voice acting and cheesy translation choices that would be terrible in a more serious series, is just plain amazing in G Gundam.

My apologies for starting a thread derail dragging a Robo/Macross thread deep into Gundam space.

However, thanks to you all for the advice regarding other Gundam series' to watch. We're still enjoying Wing well enough, but we might try 08th after it. Can't say we understand everything yet, but my son is loving the Gundam action figures and I've built a couple Gunpla. It's turned into something we both enjoy, in no small part because as my son says "there's no singing!".

None of this has dampened my hopes that we'll see more Robotech/Macross toys and models as a result of this new partnership. Gundam is cool and all, but they've yet to make anything as cool as the classic Destroids.

My advice, is don't watch Wing and stick to primarily Universal Century timeline. So OG Mobile Suit Gundam, Gundam Zeta (not ZZ), 08th MS, 80 War in the Pocket, Char's Counter Attack, then Unicorn for the best Gundam experience. If you want a good prequel watch Origin.

Also they have made something better, it is called a Zaku. NOW LET YOUR SOUL BE UNFETTERED BY EARTHS GRAVITY AND SIEG ZEON!!

Thanks for that. Unfortunately we are far enough in that my son wants to continue. Only 39 episodes of Wing to go...

The Zaku is one of my favorite designs. Just finished one a few months ago. It was a cheap (8 bucks I think?) Red colored kit without polycaps but I painted it Green and am rather happy with it.

Zaku does indeed rule but does it rule more than a Zent Battlepod?

Not sure as I really love the battlepods!

What I love about the Zentrati is there was a real effort to create an inhuman war machine. The 'headless ostrich' look is properly alien, their mechs look more organic than ours, but everything is still identifiable as a war machine.

And stuff you barely glimpse like their electronic warfare battlepods make it feel like a real military.

I agree completely. I've enjoyed buiding a few of the more military-styled Gunpla (Leo, Zaku, etc) but the Robotech designs are still my favorites.

Despite my earlier endorsement of the Destroids (also a military aesthetic) my favorite mecha design is still the Maurader/Glaug/Officer's Pod. I'll always be thankful that Battletech put the Macross designs into a sci-fi universe I really enjoy, but inversely Battletech wouldn't be what it is/was without those designs.

Wing is mostly loved for the toy factor. It to this day still has some of the most memorable MS designs in the franchise. It's other qualities are a lot more suspect, but the Gundams themselves capture the appeal of a superhero team so well it leaves a strong impression anyway while still giving people a taste of some of the core themes of the franchise. Definitely not my favorite, but... I understand.

I'd also say that it was at the time, a completely new thing unfamiliar to many Americans. It had that novelty to us and thus remains precious even if it's not quite up to par with other series in the franchise.

I'd also say it does actually have some of the most memorable Gundams.

Wing, Deathscythe, Heavyarms, and Shenlong/Altron are distinct and visually impressive by the franchise's standards. Honestly, it feels like every other Gundam, tends to be a bit better in terms of visual design? Seed and Destiny had 1 or 2 okay designs but otherwise were weird or just copied older designs (Zakus and GMs especially, only Freedom really stands out to me). Gundam 00 had some great designs. Age was meh. Reconguista in G had interesting designs but a very off art style. IBO had some of the coolest mechs in the series imo since the 90s (Barbatos is fething beast) but also felt very generic with everything that wasn't a Gundam save Hashmal.

Epyon is also an extremely memorable design from Wing.

In a lot of the shows "the Gundam" is either a one of a kind prototype or part of a mass produced line. Each case results in a bit of an everyman design. Wing is one of the few times where there are multiple Gundam prototypes that rely on gimmick designs to stand apart from one another and the result is some of the most unique in the franchise. It's only real competition is G, which has a lot of memorable designs but is way more tongue in cheek.

Wing's novelty in the US is definitely a big deal. Accessibility is a big limiter on anything UC, but of all the alt-timelines I think the varied mobile suit designs of Wing have kept it relevant where a lot of its peers have been forgotten.
