@Ahtman; I concede the point!

In all seriousness, what would “basic” Robin Hood look like to me? The Mummy (1999) is about the best example; pretty realistic period sets, costumes, etc. nice clean cinematography, straightforward heroes vs villains plot with oodles of charisma on both sides, some comedy and a light touch of scenery chewing.

One of the things that really frustrates me with the Ridley Scott version from a few years ago is that there are some parts of the film that are like that. There are also some parts that are a really interesting, darker piece about freedom, democracy and Magna Carta, which would have made a great historical drama along the lines of Kingdom of Heaven. But trying to do both in the same film absolutely did not work

Robs from the rich to give to the poor. Robin central protagonist, Sherrif the central antagonist. Acts of derring do. Lincoln Green.

From there, adjust realism to taste.

I'd go for a TV series based on the original concept for Russel Crowes meh Robin Hood feature.

The Sheriff of Nottingham as the protagonist in the middle ages themed detective series would be slick, especially if they didn't feel the need to 'science' it up and act like he was some kind of early forensics genius. Just good old investigation. Hunting down leads. Putting suspects on the rack. Chasing that dastardly hooded fellow who keeps breaking the law no matter how well meaning he is.

I'd watch that.

You know what, for all I’ve said about an “original” version, I’d watch that too!

To be honest, just remake Prince of Thieves without the teleportation (Dover to Hadrian’s Wall in minutes! Completely missing Nottingham). And without the American accents (not necessarily American accents).

I still enjoy the film as it has a lot going for it, but misplaced accents are a constant bugbear of mine.

Maybe recast Karl Urban or Tom Hardy as Robin, have at it from there. Both have tonnes of charisma. And if we’re raiding the pantry, Tom Holland as Will Scarlett?

Crap. Forgot we’d need a new Alan Rickman.

@ Doc, sadly we'd end up with Bendybucks Cabbagepatch sheriff, or worse Freeman

The problem with looking for a new Alan Rickman is that I don't think there is one. While I think Benny Cumberbatch might a fair (but only fair) stab at the Sherriff I see Martin Freeman more suited the useless sidekick Guy of Gisborne role, a la Robin of Sherwood kind of way.

new she-ra is the perfect example of the phenomenon of 'you cannot get anything made unless you can graft it to a nostalgic property somehow.' All my friends who are in the entertainment industry (and weirdly, I have several) complain about this continuously. They talk about how everyone makes fun of them for not having 'original ideas' when everyone has original ideas but they just can't fething get past the suits who don't consider anything safe enough if there isn't at least some nostalgic element that will get people in the door.

I have 0 doubt that many of the ideas for new she-ra were utterly unrelated to she-ra originally, and the original idea was just to make an ensemble cast young adult cartoon in the vein of avatar where you can market it as a kids show but adults will watch it for snappy writing and good characters, and "it can also be a she-ra reboot" was added on six months after being turned down 500 times.

Any time you watch something and ask 'what the feth, did they even watch the original?' what you're probably watching was never intended to be a remake in the first place.

There are also a few instances you can see of 'Filing off the serial numbers.' for example there have been a recent spate of movies that were probably originally intended as Five Nights at Freddies movies, and got dumped out in 2020 with the serial numbers filed off or hastily re-branded when studios were just trying to keep people aware of their existence while not wanting to risk any kind of substantial investment. That would be the 'nick cage punches puppets' and the 'banana splits' flicks.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I dunno, a scene with Freeman engaging in a bit of casual torture sounds like a great way to start a series.

Q: What do you call a Dinosaur Handpuppet?

A: A Maniraptor

I see the grim and gritty Powerpuff Girls show is being retooled.

So maybe they're learning?

Yeah the Wonder Twins agree grim-n-gritty Powerpuff girls it is about the dumbest idea they ever heard.

It occurs to me that thanks to the Larry Hama comics, I basically got a grim-n-gritty GI Joe before the sanitized cartoon
