I never did finish that game. I think it had a branching campaign that branched depending on how you did in the missions, which unfortunately were rather repetitive. Also it was purely fighter based. I actually would like a Leviathan based computer game, though Leviathan as a game needs working as it was clearly unbalanced (Class E missile systems dominated).

Looks like they are also redoing the actual Renegade Legion universe. It seems like TOG is now really the "Tellun Empire", the Commonwealth is now an alien Union, and TOG itself does not seem to be Rome in Space anymore. Ehh...not sure about this. I was kind of always hoping for something like a progression of the original, something maybe breaking up TOG, like with a civil war or the opening of a new front like with the KessRith, so that its victory did not seem inevitable and maybe making it so it was not so black and white.

Hmm...looks like they are basically reworking the whole universe. While I appreciate making things less black and white between the two main factions (since the original RL was basically Star Wars Rebels vs Empire), I will see the final product first before forming any opinions, though I do hope their Leviathan art retains some of the old imagery.

Can't bring it back under the same name. But there's nothing stopping anyone from essentially releasing it with the serial numbers filed off. The setting's been dormant for long enough that it likely wouldn't be a drawback.

Microsoft owned Battletech for a while as well. Wizkids/Catalyst/FASA might be able to buy it back, especially since it’s been dormant.

However, I think its time to be revitalized has passed - they may have had better luck reviving it back when X-Wing was hot, but likely as a flightpath game (so no templates).

I still have my original and the clix version on my shelf. I wish they’d made more airplanes during the clix era - they were sure better than the 3D paper standees.

Microsoft owns the IP rights to BattleTech computer games after their purchase of FASA Interactive. They have never owned the core intellectual property for the tabletop game.

Crimson Skies AFAIK was always a Microsoft property with FASA licensing the rights for the tabletop game.

Owned. Microsoft sold the computer game rights to Infinite Games Publishing (who partnered with Piranha Games for mechwarrior online). They've since ceded the rights to Piranha and gone bankrupt (2014).

Harebrained Schemes Battletech game didn't happen until after that (because Weisman didn't want to try until the rights were out of MS's control). Between the fuzzy lines between the rights to Mechwarrior and Battletech (they're technically not the same thing, especially for computer games), and whether Piranha and HBS have a rights agreement or something more complicated, I have no idea. Well, some idea, since HBS' Battletech uses Piranha models for the Mechs, which means there's some sort of deal, but Microsoft isn't involved anymore.

Battletech is a rights clusterfeth (even before you get to the Robotech Issues).
Renegade Legion & Crimson Skies are similar, but people care less.

No, it was a unique IP developed by Jordan Weisman and FASA (well, technically another company which merged with FASA) in the first place. Microsoft acquired the rights when they purchased FASA.

Correct, if I recall correctly, Fasa did bid on producing the Star Wars fighter combat game and RL was the submission. However rumour had it that the licensees felt the concept was too complicated and gave the licence to West End Games who had come up with Star Warriors.

Well, at least that's how I remember it.

During a panel at RedCon95, FASA President Sam Lewis stated that the Renegade Legion series of games were originally designed for use with the Star Wars license. Since the license was awarded to West End Games, FASA chose to use the systems with their own setting.

It’s all moot, anyway. This so called ‘Interceptor’ Kickstarter is going to crash and burn, barely a third of the way to the minimum goal. I wonder why? Let’s see - Rules, they completely nuked everything related to Renegade Legion : Interceptor. Background - they completely nuked the Renegade Legion setting, in exchange for yawn inducing gibberish. This was a pretender, made by a company that is FASA in name only. It deserves the scrap heap it’s headed towards.

I'm actually kinda glad to see it's not getting funded. Hopefully 'FASA' take a critical look at why it's failed, take on board the feedback, and then retry with game that's fit for purpose in the 21st Century.

Although, on the other hand, if they just said - "for out next kickstarter we're just going to reprint the old TOG games verbatim" I'd probably chuck them some cash.

Harmony Gold did have a valid licence, so we can't say otherwise. But Harmony Gold did not have exclusive rights in the manner they claimed they had.

Even ‘FASA’ gave up on this ‘Interceptor’ when it became apparent it was dead in the water - no updates or responses to comments from this pretender company on Kickstarter in two weeks. Once there was no chance of this funding, instead of cancelling or retooling it, they just chose to vanish.

It is easier to let it fail. Cancelling means what you think it means unless they commit to a promise to return.

well if nothing else this KS led to me opening the old Interceptor boxed game again and looking for some of the old minis for it (wow hard to find!)

I thought the old game (Renegade Legion Interceptor) had a fascinating background and pretty fun gameplay... right up to damage allocation. Then it became a real pain. I considered re-jiggering things into something like that of their other games but never had the time.

What was everyone else's thought on it?

I actually really enjoyed the damage allocation flow chart thing in old RL Interceptor. Yeah, it took a while, but it was exciting to see what system fried next. Sometimes it's nice to not be so concerned with "speed of play," and be able to get lost in some of the crazy details that some of the old guard wargames had.

So there seem to be 2 attempts at the old Renegade Legion system/franchise: The FASA failed Kickstarter for a new universe. Then there is the Budgie Smuggler Games "Renegade Legion" which aside from borrowing the name and the name of TOG seems to be an entirely new universe. I fail to see how that really attracts the old Renegade Legion crowd if you're just going to throw out the old background entirely.

There seems to be a reasonably sized Renegade Legion Facebook group based around the original universe.

Our main complaint was how the same systems got hit much of the time. First game, it was fun while the armor held, then the internals started shorting out the opponent's power plant or drive. From there, he coasted at the same velocity the rest of the game while I coasted alongside pouring fire into the breached armor.

For three or four turns, as I would short his drive/power plant and ultimately hit everything else on the allocation chart before killing him.

Next game it was my turn. Lots of fun until the internals came in, and then I coast along without power for three or four turns of receiving fire while he guts my fighter.

Our experience was that first internals almost always determined the winner. So... just have the first internal kill and move on to the next game.
