No secret here. I love the game, it's fun, we have a pretty solid community here, and it's more social than it is competitive. I host "get togethers" every other Sunday, we smoke meat on the Traeger, drink beers if you're old enough, and play games and talk. Sometimes we only have 3 or 4, sometimes we've had 10-12. It's as much social as it is competitive.

I, like everyone else here, love the lore, the setting, and the models, oh man, the models. I love painting, wholly appreciate contrast paint as it made that process easier (i am not a great painter by any stretch) and I like that GW is regularly releasing FAQ and updates to their game.

Nothing is perfect, but as I've stated earlier, I work as a grief counselor/coordinator while performing my other job duties as a behavioral analyst, and a lot of the stuff I deal with is, heavy, to say the least. So the game provides a very helpful prosocial outlet that I can invest in to step away for a day every other Sunday. As someone who works 2 full-time jobs, and goes to school for my PsyD, and has a daughter and wife, what little time I get to be "Scott the nerd" is important and 40k hits all of those checkboxes for a hobby I want to spend my time in.

but mostly, the social aspects.

Models mostly, IMHO GW miniatures are the best ones around. Those related to my favorite factions at least. And the game is good enough to be worthy of being played, which for me is sufficient.

I like the setting and majority of miniatures and scenery. I have never bothered to read the background and I can't comment the game because I haven't played since 4th edition.

That place is the harsh dark future far left with only war left.

I see a lot of post about the models which I totally agree and the lore which is awesome.

However, I think the models are getting more dynamic but less customisable with time. Which is great for characters etc, but less awesome for rank and file. I just wish they would keep the standard trooper more like the old SM tac squad or Deathwatch Veterans box where you can customise them and individualise so much more (as I stated before).

Totally agree with the few posts as a stress relief outlet (don't have to play can just build/paint or watch vids etc about it) having a high stress job myself it is awesome to relax with this hobby (and its cheap compared to some and less destructive compared to others).

The social aspect has always been the best part for me.

These days I have a greater appreciation for the productivity and long term project engagement... that I'm not wasting my time / life in front of a tv screen or eyes glued to a smart phone.

There's something to be said for that long-term part too. As a kid, painting an army was the only thing I could sit still and concentrate on long enough to complete without being prompted/threatened by adults. Being able to put that fully complete army on the table gave me (and continues to this day to give me) such a sense of accomplishment. I'm a really hard worker now, and I feel like it began with 40k as a kid. There wasn't anything else like it (for me at the time) that gave that long-term payoff for the hard work.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

Psiensis on the "good old days":
"Kids these days...
... I invented the 6th Ed meta back in 3rd ed.
Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..."

I love to hear stories like this (though I grew up in a different era... always threatened with failure, but not having this escape available).

Your hard work and time is validated not in my word or word of others, but in your perception of the effort and achievement (and your perception is what matters).

The vast mass of conversion parts and obsolete rules to draw on when trying to do something creative and interesting rather than succumbing to the tyranny of officialdom and trying to play the tournament-standard game.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

- Unique setting. Orks, elves and wizards in space without the whole thing feeling silly is pretty awesome.
- Tons and tons of good novels. There are some quite bad ones out their (the worst one I read was "The Inquisition War"), but also a great number of really good ones.
- Models - I enjoy building and converting citadel models a lot, especially after having dabbled with 3rd party and 3D printing. Many of them also look really great.
- Fun game that you can enjoy with a group of friends.
- Actual, official narrative support you can build on.
- Regular updates and fixes.
- Very active community.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

- Engagement rules.
- Gunlines and TITANIC units are not too strong.
- New Necron models are neat, I love having tonnes of characters.
- GW releases Errata and FAQs to nerf overpowered units and buff underpowered units. Warriors and Tesla Immortals are both in a good place.
- GW adopting ITC missions as their tournament format squelching discussion about other mission formats fixing all the game's flaws.
- Picking secondaries is fun.
- Command Protocols are fun when they have an effect.
- Necron named character WL traits make a lot of sense.
- Veil of Darkness is still lots of fun.
- Reanimation Protocols is no longer all or nothing.
- C'tan are properly elite.
- Rods of the Covenant turned out to not be such a bad choice in the long run.
- Necrons got a codex early.
- All mention of Tesserarion removed from the new codex. I would rather have ambiguous lore than nonsense lore.

Real; interaction with a person, not scripted entertainment, the intellectual challenge of being hit with something unexpected. Totally unscripted, not market researched, audience targeted politically correct and WOKE! media, but unpredictable, challenging action.

That's enter-tainment!

your mind

Old school sci fi fantasy tie ins or allusions e.g. Fafrd and the Grey Mouser, Moorcock’s hero with a thousand faces jam, space elves... about everything up to numarines except e.g our lord and saviour . Now garbage ...

The lore, it is what keeps people coming back, playing and being devoted to their faction. However my interest in the lore has dropped to zero since the introduction of primaris. the entire concept was poorly implemented and does not fit the lore.

It is also why our group still plays our hybrid 5th edtiion because the game is more fun focused on how the armies should behave in universe on the table.

It's the D&D/Magic: The Gathering of tabletop wargaming, meaning you will always find someone who plays it (which, for me, is incredibly important). This in turn creates large communities for the game which is another plus. I also like a lot of the 40k memes that pop up in my feeds (although that would be related to communities I guess).

Otherwise like others have the lore, setting, and painting (and yes, even the complaints from others about the game/GW can be enjoyable in a way).

Loads of cool, high quality models. Rules are pretty fun if not particularly balanced.

Plenty of good lore around (and some not-so-good lore).

I would say pretty much everything bar the actual 40k game (oh and the whole Primaris lore thing). I would much rather get the side games using the same models out or use a different rules system. Sadly most groups are too conservative to do so, so you are stuck with the current (tournament) flavour of 40k (8th edition 500 point games were fun, but again trying to get something other than 2000 points is very hard).
