I think that's a perfect way to do it. You can get tired of painting after a while but working on a few each week and you'll see progress in no time. 40k is definitely a great way to spend downtime during quarantine.

Main army.
I collect Nurgle: mainly Death Guard, but also Nurgle Daemons and since DG got their Codex I had to outsource some models (Obliterators, Bikes, Raptors etc.), but they're also played as Nurgle Renegades and fluffwize I consider them as DG, too. They also feature the same paint scheme.
I've also started Orks this year but they'll be build to a rather large army, too. I just find let's say 2000points not enough to build the army I have in mind and I'd never want to play the same list twice.
In lotr I do have three armies (Mordor, Rhun, Moria) but they're each pretty large, too and basically it's all "Orks + allies" first.
Star Trek Attack Wing is where I have a lot of different fleets (8) but there you can finish a project pretty fast, too. Some factions consist of just 2-4 ships so it's no problem to get these and move on.

From 3rd through 5th 40K i was a "many" army player because i only had 3 games i played (battletech/B5 wars and 40k) so for variety i built 8 different 40K armies. As of late 5th i really just focused on my DIY chapter and pretty well stopped there. when it comes to other game systems i stayed with the mono army for the most part (as i play so many systems) with a few exceptions.

For warmachine it is khador all day every day, for infinity it is haqqislam, for BFG it is my thousands sons fleet, for heavy gear it is CEF, and so on.

The exceptions come in the form of things that tend to be skirmsih/low model count armies for example i stil play the same 3 factions i always have for battletech, the Narn and earth alliance for B5 wars, the royal navy and IJN for victory at sea and for DUST i have 3 demo armies so i can teach other people how to play the game.

So in the end it is kind of a toss up. i actually have switched to spending more time on terrain now than any new armies as i really do not need anything to play any of my games when it comes to armies.

I'm not that long into the hobby, but pretty clear a main army guy and it will likely stay that way. Including the yet to finished stuff I have ~ 6000 points of IG. I'm interested in some other 40K armies (Orks, Admech, to a lesser degree sisters), but there it mostly comes down to one infantry sets and one or two vehicles I would like to build and paint. Meanwhile when I look at my wishlist of guard models, planned conversions and proxies I would like to own I will likely break the 10k barrier somewhere in the future.

One other army I will start though (and really collect more than the odd model) will be Seraphon skinks. Mostly because they are the only one (so far) where I see a whole bunch of stuff I want to collect. It's currently filed under "my 2021 christmas present"

Well I do have a main army. When they updated the whole Dark Eldar line back in 2010(wasn't it?) I fell in love with the models and started collecting them. They are what I mostly play. Before them it was my Catachan which I still love and it is a decent sized army. DE just got bigger at some point. But who doesn't love side projects also?

I have a small Harlequin force that has a clear plan how I will build it. Just started Craftworlds recently. I also have the Ynnari trio if I wish to go that way.

I dabble a little bit in Chaos as far as terminators and cultists just because I love the models.

I also play kill team with several factions and some of them I do not use in 40k and don't even want to.

Then there is AoS, Blood Bowl and Necromunda but 40k and DE are still the ones that get the most love.

I shall rule the world someday utilizing my cuteness. And I already have one minion to help me do it!

1k World Eaters
1k Thousand Sons

-Xenos-

Actually both.

I usually have an army that I play for a longer time period.
This was DE at the beginning of 3rd edition.
Then came a log period playing tourney-Eldar in 4th and 5th.
After this, I played tourney-Necrons in the 6th and 7th.

On the other hand, I played Orks once in a tourney, 5th ed, and won it.
I felt this army was too powerful and so I sold it.

Today, I play Necrons - frankly I like the challenge.

Indeed, this is me as well.

My Main army is my Boyz, even thought whats on the shelf seems medium sized..
Spoiler:

I have three, maybe four times that in boxes, including three more Battlewagons, Speed Freaks box unconstructed, loads more Grots and Boyz, and you know I'll be grabbing Beast Snaggas and the new Ork models.

On top of that my secondary armies... Dark Angels

I'd say would be considered a main army type person. I've run Craftworld/Eldar through every edition and built a few second armies over the years, then sold them. Currently, I have a large Craftworld collection(15,000+ points) and about 2200 points of Necrons and 1500 points of Dark Angels.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Closer to the "main army person", as I am really only passionate about the Nids, my largest collection (~10k points).

I do have a GSC army for casual games for friends to shoot up and laugh (hard to use them for anything else), roughly 3k of Blood Angels just to silence that one childish voice in the head, and about as much AdMech for games when I am fed up with wonky melee rules in 40k.

I'm definitely a main army guy. Got close to 4000 points of Death Guard, although I'm soon going to be drawing a line under that and declaring the army "completed".

My only other army is Ad Mech, which I barely have 1500 points painted, but I've also got a not insignificant amount in my pile of shame, so hopefully that will bring it up to 2000.

Definitely "ARMIES"

I have:

- almost a full chapter of Red Hunters (I have all the marines needed in a mix of FB and Primaris, but I need to bulk out the motor pool lol)
- 5000pts of Mechanicus (which includes a Knight Errant and a Knight Valiant)
- 6000pts of Orks (including a Stompa)
- 2200pts of Astra Militarum
- 2500pts of Tsons
- 3000pts of DG
- 3000pts of Iron Warriors
- 1500pts of Creations of Bile
- 2100pts of Tau
- 3000pts of Necrons
- 1200pts of generic "unaligned but most closely resembling Black Legion" CSM
- 900pts of Inquisition forces
- 1200pts Demons of Tzeench
- 800pts Demons of Nurgle

I've been playing since RT era so it's not as big a collection as it seems when you see how long it's been in effect. lol

All of the Imperium stuff is part of a huge project where everything falls under the command of an Inquisitor. I won't bore you with the background fluff, but suffice it to say I fell in love with the idea of the Inquisition Ordo who's job it is to hunt down tainted machines. So all the Imperium stuff bears some mark of the Inquisition.

In terms of game play, I tend to end up focusing on only one or two armies (3 if it's a longer edition) per edition. So while I'm always painting building everything, not all armies will see the table each edition. The Tau have been on the shelf for AGES for example. This allows me to have flexibility so that, if for some reason I dislike how an army plays in that specific codex, I can just use one I like better, and go back to the other army whenever they're "fixed".

My current focus are Necrons, Tsons (actually enjoying the challenge of making Tsons "work" in 9th), and Mechanicus. I bought the DG codex for 9th, but I don't like the way they feel to play now. I can't really tell you why. There's nothing "wrong" with the book. Just something about them I don't enjoy now, so they got swapped out for the Tsons.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

I’m definitely a main army person. Mostly due to time constraints! I imagine I’ll have multiple armies eventually, but for now I’ve got a main army and some ancillary bits and pieces.

Main army is space marines, and the additional stuff is the death guard from Dark Imperium, the CSM from the Shadowspear, the Necrons from Indomitus and the models in Blackstone Fortress. Most of the above is still in the box!!

I have usually 2-3 armies at a time. I tend to go through phases: shelving an army when it got shafted by points changes or a new edition, and then picking it up again once it has a new codex. Lately I've been playing mostly Drukhari and Sisters of Battle, but I also have my old Cadians.

I used to have pure biker White Scars, but sold them off when GW removed the rule allowing bikers to count as troops.

Cadians, Sisters of Battle (Argent Shroud), Drukhari (Obsidian Rose)

I'm another in the main army with multiple secondaries camp.

My main is Biel-Tan. I haven't calculated current points totals for any of these armies, but the last time I calculated my Biel-Tan it came out around 10k.

Others (with a decent amount of stuff actually painted) are:
Salamanders firstborn
Deathwatch
Order of Our Martyred Lady
Frozen Stars harlequins

Others that I have models for but basically not started:
Metalica Admech
Imperial Knights
The Primaris from multiple starter sets/army boxes
The non-space marine side of multiple starter sets...

Bags,
Sounds like your gaming style should be skirmish games. I got into Killteam because of the ability to make several small forces. My main armies are Orks and Space Wolves. I also have a fragmented group of Imperial Guard. It's always fun to start a new project. Right now I'm trying to clean up my pile of shame and work on my Star Wars Legion Starter set. Good luck completing your stuff.

I am both.

My main army is, and will always be Necrons. They are by far my largest collection and my favorite.

That being said, I do also have Tyranids and Thousand Sons, with Tzeentch Daemons. Thanks to the Anti-soup rules I'll be branching my Tzeentch Daemons into full Chaos Daemons.

I've also got a bunch of stuff backlogged as well, such as Custodes, Deathguard and Vanilla CSM. I'd also like to start SOB. Some of these armies, like Custodes and DG will be much smaller than my others.

At the moment I've kept it to just Harlequins for modern 40K with the intent of matched play, should we ever get back to the tables. I also have Craftworlds and Tyranids for 3rd edition.

Growing frustrated with the slow release schedule for Adeptus Titanicus, I'm now considering Chaos Knights for solo 40K and Kill Team games.

I'm probably a both. I started with IG in 3rd edition, which has grown dramatically over the decades and is still my largest army. I had slimmed down my other armies at multiple points either due to personal finances or not really playing much in 6th/7th.

When I got my brother's old space Marine army about 5 years back, I started painting it as a goof, doing vintage color Ultramarines. Well, 8th edition arrives, and with it primaris, and now I have two full battle companies.

despite my best efforts, I either kept or acquired metal GK, metal craftworlds, and metal sisters, little of which is painted.

and then during COVID, I built and painted a large Tau army.

So, I have a main army, and two other 10k plus armies, but plenty of smaller armies.
