Fun fact in the book Legion of the Damned, Khornate cultists build a monument to Khorne by robbing the graves of soldiers, strapping themselves to a tomb stone, then jumping in a lake to place both the stolen skull and theirs on the submerged monument.

If chaos let’s you choose your poison then that’s more choice than the imperium gives you.

Also agron was turned into a rage filled psycho by the butchers nails and then the emperor, khorne just gave him room to operate

Yeah I don't agree with that. Chaos inherently allows for more individuality than the philosophy embodied in the Imperium.

Yup, Magnus was always going to be the "guardian" of the Webway portal on Terra, just in case and also as a battery. Even into the Siege books, it's still a plot point.

Not wanting to go deeply into the topic of whether the imperium/emperor is worse than chaos, but as far as I understood it, Magnus was always supposed to sit on the golden throne BUT I think if everything had worked out, it would not even be comparable to what sitting on the golden throne is now.

Basically had the emperors plan worked, the golden throne would have been just the gateway into the webway, but with working wards in place that keep the entrance and the webway itself safe from demons.
Basically every part of that plan has gone to gak and the emperor has to keep a large portion of his power reserved to keep said gateway closed 24/7. Otherwhise terra, the astronomican and eventually humanity itself would be completely fethed.

Which is why I still think that the relationship between the emperor and magnus during the crusade and the heresy is one of the biggest plot holes in 40k.
Magnus was imo by far the most important primarch. The webway project was the endgame for the emperor and magnus was one of the most important pieces to that plan. If you consider magnus being that of an important asset, the trial of nikea, the emperor not telling magnus anything and sending russ of all people to get him to terra, makes zero sense whatsoever.

Also the emperor was able to charge the astronomicon from across the galaxy for a long time so maybe Magnus wouldn’t have actually had to sit in it all the time.

I agree the council of nikea has been turned into a problem for the story, when it was just something mentioned in the back ground it was ok but then there are so many conflicts with the idea of the council the decisions it made the consequences and how other chapters behaved since the HH novels were written.

The Emperor sent Russ because the Wolves could be trusted to follow the Emperor's commands to the letter and not accidently invade Prospero and burn it all. Of course Horus also spoke with the voice of the Emperor and gave Russ new orders to kill Magnus instead. Combine that with the Custodes element being led by a prat and potential interference by the Changeling, then we get Prospero. AFAIK Magnus never actually learns it was Horus who caused the death of his homeworld.

Yeah, but come on. Russ was looking for an excuse. Valdor even told him to be cautious about this command, but Russ with his bone headed attitude, went in guns blazing anyway. Valdor was trapped between a rock and a hard place and tried to mitigate damage. It's true that Valdor as a character is often very passive, but what were his options? Argue with Russ or try to overrule him? Yeah like that would have worked. Try to take on Russ if push comes to shove? Valdor alone couldn't take him and even with help it would be a long shot....also they were friends...kinda.

For a different take on Chaos I recommend reading Peter Fehervari. His take is more that chaos is an "element" force without direct intelligence instead of chaos god entity. He describes how chaos is more in everything but he does it very subtly so you need at times look for Easter eggs and stop in the middle of reading to think about what you just read. He writes chaos as more "realistic" in how it influences and works in more everyday parts. He is the only 40k writer that made me feel partially depressed/despair and hollow after a reading a 40k book due to how he made it feel realistic in the point of view form the characters.

His books are different than what usually comes out from Black library, but it was his take on chaos that made me get back strongly into 40k after a 15 year break. But be warned that his writing style is different and after reading I also recommend looking up forums about his books t find the Easter eggs you missed.
