But just think, you could expand to 40,000 pts without having to sell a kidney. Or afford to branch out into other forces....

Nah, I'm Guard for life. Will never touch another faction.

I probably have a lot more than 20,000 I've never really counted it all out.

I still remember when I first started, it would have been around 2003, in the end-point of 3rd edition. My first experience into 40k was a present from one of my uncles, he gave me a toolbox and told me to open it. It was full of Space Wolves, but there was one model in there that was different. Something the owner either put in there by accident, or just somehow had as apart of their collection, a single Cadian guardsmen. The old metal ones.

I thought this model was way cooler than the Space Wolves I was given and had a look around town to see if I could find more. Found a box of the newly released plastic Cadian guardsmen and bought it with all the pocket money I had saved up. Back then they came in boxes of 20. I built and painted them. Probably spent a day per model. Then I found out a few people in high school also played it, I didn't even know it was a game at that point.

I told them I collected Guard and said I had 20 models that I could play with. They explained the rules and that I needed a codex for my army. Went back to the bookshop maybe a month later after I saved enough pocket money and bought the 3.5 edition Guard codex. I was shocked that I needed a lot more (but still less than now) Guardsmen to actually play.

Over the next month I bought another 20 model box, and a heavy weapon team. Back when you could get heavy weapon teams in either a single, or three model box. Built them and painted them.

The next month I discovered that there was actually an electronics shop in town that sold 40k as well. The owner actually played as well and just wanted to get more people involved so he sold everything at cost, his main business was the electronics so he didn't really need the extra money. I saw that he offered Cadian Battleforces which was a HUGE saving compared to what I was getting all those single kits from the book store.

It took me a bit longer to get them, about every 3 months I was able to get a Battleforce box. Maybe 2 months if I pocketed my lunch money and didn't eat for that day, I was crazy back then. Ended up getting 5 of those boxes that year.

So my collection ballooned to 140 guardsmen, 13 heavy weapon teams, and 5 leman russ tanks. Then I realised I needed commanders, so I asked the store owner to order in some of the old medal Cadian officers (I still love the look of them) and a Cadian command squad box. Ended up with 3 command squad boxes (15 models there) and 6 other officers.

This is going on far too long, and we're still in 2003 - 2004. To summarise, I kept saving my pocket (and sometimes lunch) money and bought at least 1 kit every month or 2. I did that until about the start of 5th edition. I probably had 5000 points in Guard units from just the 3.5 codex datasheets alone.

The crazy prices for Guardsmen is what prompted me to switch to using Wargames Atlantic Les Grognards for my infantry. $35 (US) for 24 guys instead of 10 (and those 10 GW guardsmen just got a lot more expensive with the extra sprue thrown in) is a no-brainer. And honestly I think the WGA models are a lot less boring than the ubiquitous Cadians. Luckily for me I had barely started collecting Guard and only had a small amount to go with my Knights, so I didn't lose too much money (and will get a small amount of it back once I sell my Cadian models). The vehicles I'm keeping, no need to go 3rd party on those, but all of my infantry models are now WGA Frenchmen with Foreign Legion style hats.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

I was building a small guard force last year and realised the metal steel legion were about the same as the plastic cadians, so I just bought those to go with my existing 2e metals.

Now the Steel Legion are cheaper! I wonder if they will come back in stock at all.

I think it's great that more people will be using third party models now, because GW are really taking the piss with these prices. Hopefully it also encourages a more tolerant attitude toward third party models in tournaments. I also use the Mantic Mule miniatures for my jeeps, mostly because I think the Taurox looks silly.

Fun fact, its cheaper to buy a 3d printer + setup than starting an scions regiment....
Especially if you like infantry...

Yes, even locally in highprice land....

Which is why i am seriously considering investing into a 3d printer at home, however i'd rather avoid resin for health and smell reasons.

Is there anyone out there who would actually pay that kind of price for that product?

I think a rise in folks using 3rd Party AM figures and 3D prints will have the opposite effect - GW will want to clamp down at supported tourneys.

Hmm, could have sworn that LVO's new modeling policy required GW models, but I can't find it now, except for the stipulation that if you make it to a streamed table (or are asked to play on a streamed table earlier in the event), you have to use GW models or you're not eligible to play any more. So I guess technically you can go to LVO with non-GW models...you just can't advance to a winning position, you'd have to forfeit if you made it that far and don't have GW models.

Accusing people of lying with no basis and no evidence is not very cool, btw.

The streaming thing is the same for any tournament that wants to go on WarCom or other GW channels, and I don't think anyone has actually forfeit - AFAIK whenever it's come up they've found replacement models for them to use (such as the guy who was using Gundams for Tau battlesuits).

To be fair to them, I was able to find this (couple years out of date, but presumably still applicable) re: what happens if you don't have GW models and make it to the finals:

I personally have nothing against third party models and think there are some amazing one out there, but to take this to the next level we have to work with GW and their rules for their stream are that we have to use their stuff (which totally makes sense). And on the stream, we use GW terrain and tiles. It was a concession made on our part (we of course want to show off our mats and terrain on the stream) because we feel we can do more, grow more, and achieve more working with GW. For example, the LVO stream last year was the biggest there’s ever been for tabletop minis by a mile, we had over 100,000 unique viewers and 13,000 concurrent during the finals. We could not have done that without working with GW. It’s worth the trade-off.

And if your models aren’t fit for streaming we go out of our way to try and find substitutions. We don’t just boot someone outright, unless they refuse to swap out models but that has never hapenned so far.

People can bring and play with 3rd party minis, it’s just the stream table that has restrictions.

So they would try to avoid forcing a forfeit by rustling up some GW models from other people at the tournament, and you'd only have to forfeit if you weren't willing to use those models and/or I guess in theory if they couldn't find GW replacements.

Obviously it's not likely to come up anyway as the chances of anyone making it to the streamed finals of a major tournament like LVO are extremely low. But it does show that even outside of GW-sponsored events, GW has managed to entice others to enforce a GW-models only policy for the most visible elements of their tournaments as well.

You know about the Les Grognards Command and Heavy Support box, right?

I really like the two Les Grognards kits. So much kit-bashing potential and variety right out of the box. For Operation Last Train, there are four troop types, and the four heads in the Les Grognards kit map well to those troop types. Grenadiers are the melee specialists, and I used the bearskins, Light infantry have a move bonus (using the shako), Line infantry have a shoot bonus (Adrian helmet), and Heavy has armor (the kepi blanc, as the French Foreign Legion is hard as they come). I'll use them in Stargrave too, once I get a chance to play it.

Operation Last Train is a solo game, but only has three official scenarios (all on the designer's blog, linked above). I've been told there are more on Facebook, but I don't facebook.

They've a similar Space Brits kit in development, so those wanting not-Praetorian Guard will have that option, although one can convert one of the many Anglo-Zulu War British Infantry sets right now.

It looks like they've discontinued the easy build cadians! I cant find them on the store and an email from GW support (although vague) seems to confirm this. This means Astra Militarum standard infantry are now £0.73 per point? (£29 for 40pts) That's more than doubled! The easy build cadians worked out at £0.3 per point. (£6 for 20pts) Not great but less than half the new asking price.

As a comparison space marine infantry (intercessors) are only £0.18 per point! (£35 for 200pts)

Astra Militarum were always an expensive faction to collect, but this is huge!

As much as I enjoy moaning... never buy Cadians new. Always buy second hand.

I bought about 5k points of Guard from Toledo Game Room at Nova Open for about $200. It's the cheapest army I have.

The models will be released separately at a later date. One box of Kill Team: Octarius to get the first DKoK, sure, but multiple boxes seems too expensive. Unless you have buyers for the ork half, of course.

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2021/07/10/warhammer-preview-online-octarius-mission-briefing/

I do like the look of the plastic Kriegers, but if they price the eventual squad box high, like this thread has been discussing, odds are I won't buy it. Got the Last Chancers of which I've only painted 2 of 12, so I've a regular or veteran squad for KT once I finish. And there's some stray Praetorian Guard bought at discount who can sub in with the Last Chancers if I need more of [X] weapon. DKoK would be a luxury purchase bought for the look, not need.

Ohh, yes. I bought one of that box plus 3 of the regular troops kit, and plan to add more later, whenever I get around to actually working on my Guard. So far I feel like the Les Grognards are much more complete as far as options compared to the other WGA offerings (Raumjagers, Eisenkern, and those Norse-type ones), and not just because they already have a Heavy/Command box. There are good "counts-as" for all of the weapon types (plasma, melta, flamer, grenade launcher) in the Grognards sprues, and none of the others have all of those unless I missed it.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

That I wouldn't know as I've only bought both Les Grognards boxes. Planning to buy the Cannon Fodder when they are finally released, and Space Brits, but the Raumjager, Einherjar (?), and Eisenkern don't interest me. Also like the French Partisans, but don't have a need for them.
