Not yet, but I made bet that I would only ever start a Space Marine army if they made plastic Helbrecht and Grimaldus models...

... mostly because I didn't think it would ever happen after they curbed the codex.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

I 3d printed like 9 titans in quarantine purely on the off chance someone afterwards might want to play titanicus.

Hey, at least they cost me a grand total of forty bucks, so there's that!

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Not worst reason but good reasons:

Reading battle reports in WD made me start an army two times:

- Ulthwe Eldar (BR was against CSM Black Legion)

- Bad Moons Orks (BR was SM Black Templar against a clanless Ork force).

At one point I had too many unpainted SM models. I created out of those two other chapters with a low model count (below 30 models).
One chapter was inspired by Fallout 3 video game during 4th and so they got a atomic mushroom cloud as a chapter insignia (Nuclear Rampagers, colours: red gore and rust).
The other chapter was painted in a forest camouflage pattern so that my Catachans had a few ally units in power armour.

My Nurgle Daemon army came to be by surprise because I just used the daemons from the Doom board game. The only GW models are an old GUO, Mortarion from Epic SM and three Dark Elf Sorceress surrounded by Nurglings to represent Heralds.

Night Lords were started by having the best paint scheme in 2nd and the great feel of having outdated tech to work with:
No ability to teleport terminators, no jump pack troops (raptors were introduced in 3rd), no targeters on heavy weapons and no access to landspeeders, razorbacks and whirlwinds. As compensation they got access to daemon summoning during battle.

My main SM force have a strange gimmick. They all have pale, white skin and glowing green eyes with the exception of the scouts. Inspired by the Undead Hordes of the video game Disciples 2.

Tyranids force was started because of having an excess amount of genestealers from old Space Hulk box sets. A Hive Tyrant has been added, a patriarch and three tentacle dudes with permanent spore clouds. That's it.

Dark Eldar were started in 5th because of the great new models. It is also the force which has still the most unopened boxes. However a small amount of the army is painted and battle ready.

Imperial Knights were purchased after watching Pacific Rim. LOL!

I bought Shadowspear for the Primaris side. Couldn't find anyone to take the chaos... so I said to myself, well, might as well start an army with them! Got some more chaos marines, some havocs, abaddon. I was set to start up a Black Legion army... and quickly remembered why I sold out of Chaos armies on 3 different occasions. Not sure exactly what, but I get tired of painting chaos armies of any sort. AoS, 40k, Deathguard, Khorne, any of them. Just can't get in to it.

I got a free Necron Lord when I bought Assault on Black Reach (I was starting Black Templars and splitting with a mate who collected Orks). That same day I bought two Necron battleforces and a Monolith.

I think about it now and cannot believe I spent $500 on 40k in one day... To have that kind of disposable income again!

GW acronym stands for the following in German:
„Geld Weg."

Translates into: Money gone.

I purchased an entire Legion of the Damned army in 3rd Edition solely to dish it to a cheesemaster Eldar player at our local club. He flat out refused to play that army again and pretty much only went against me from that point on in tourneys where it wasn't in his best interest to refuse a game.

I'm going to be starting some WFB armies that I really am not motivated to own solely because I want to own every 6th Ed. army. So that means Tomb Kings and Chaos Dwarfs as checkbox armies. I'd add Empire to that dreaded list but as my intent is to have Morgan Bernhardt's Grudgebringers as my Empire force I wouldn't consider that a "worst" reason.

The first thing that got me thinking about collecting Drukhari was when I leafed through their 8E codex and saw the subfaction stratagem for the Kabal of the Obsidian Rose (Failure Is Not An Option): if you fail a morale test, the fleeing models can shoot before they run, and if they kill something, they all stay. At the time I was mostly playing IG (who often get their asses kicked by morale), and I thought: "Wow, that's a pretty nifty stratagem." It's a small thing, but it's what planted the seed.

They have been my main army for about three years now and I love them. Great model range, and fun to play. I still run Obsidian Rose, despite Failure Is Not An Option being rarely useful in 9E due to the way morale/attrition tests work.

Mine is/was "If GW ever goes under, I still want to be able to play all the factions with friends." I've always worked towards collecting every army to some degree.

That's less of a worry now with 3D printing and such, but I'm basically shoulder deep at this point already so not much reason to turn back now.

I started Imperial Fist because I was in the market for a full primaris army (My Blood Angels were all firstborn) and I was thinking of going Iron Hands or Raven Guard but I got a fully painted IF army that had the upgrade spurs and all for a good deal. The original idea was to strip them (about 1500pts in late 8th) but I realized I was too lazy, and I actually like IF now. Its at almost 3k fully painted now and has seen a lot of action in 9th.

I started Deathwatch because I loved the Corvus Blackstars and they reminded me the Aliens drop ship, and Aliens is my favorite movie.

I still do like my Deathwatch even though they've had some real hits to unique feeling lately, and I feel like my first born, the only unique parts to it really, are on a chopping block from GW. Oh and the Corvus kind of has been meh for long stretches of the army being out, so that sucks.

Note to the kids, don't just get an army because you like a vehicles look.

That one hits me in the feels, yeah they really made primaris heavy Deathwatch feel kinda bland.Really kinda pissed me off, and yeah people can scream balance all they want, doesn't make it feel better. Especially not when some armies laughingly claim to be " balanced " currently. I think the Deathwatch were a victim of marine dial back and underwhelming codex supplements for all marine sub factions coupled with being at the start of the edition.

Just wanting to paint an army looks like a perfectly fine reason to me, if not the best one.
I have just bought 1000 points of Custodes, just because I want to paint them in a certain scheme. I doubt I'll ever play them, as I don't plan on expanding beyond that, but who knows.

fair point, but this was really early 5th edition pre riptide, I was still a college student and really should have been spending money wiser back then. That said i did advertise for my painting service with said army beside my orks and basically paid for college as i went painting models so maybe there is an aspect of advertising budget in there.

I kinda got into Stormcast because I wanted Nighthaunt and bought Soul Wars with the intend to sell the SCE. Then I had an epiphany were I wanted to paint them in a deathknighty theme. Bought the dominion SCE half as well and painted so far half of them. No nighthaunt basically painted this far. I dont think Ill play AoS or that I will like SCE as an army.

Worst reasoned? Sisters of Battle, because after 20 years of waiting for plastic models I felt that I should probably buy some of the plastic models.

Never mind that I already have a whole army of the pewter ones that I hadn't finished painting.

I've bought a lot of armies because of a getting them at really good prices.

For example, I have a huge pro-painted Tau army that I have never touched. I made some plans to someday run a Taros campaign, but who knows if that will ever happen.

I also buy armies based on nostalgia. I am very weak if I spot 90s metal minis at good prices.

Bought a WHFB Vampire Counts army simply because another guy at club said he wanted to do Dark Elves, I hated how they played until End Times and then started a Dark Elf force out of frustration at the vamps and the guy who said he wanted to do them never went any further with them

40K: Started a Scions army because I was bored of chaos marines, then realised they were practically unplayable and sold them (this was during their brief time as a standalone army). I now have approx 2k points of Scions again as I am currently bored with chaos marines (again) and they're getting painted like Shore Troopers from Starwars and I'm happy despite rarely wanting to play 40k at the moment as my focus is on AOS Stormcast

I started building a Praetorian Army using Victorian Miniatures as I wanted a co-ed army but they didn't have female Tallarn at the time (who I really wanted), so I went with Praetorian as my next choice. And as soon as I had purchased and assembled 90% of my army they then released female Tallarn, so I HAD to buy myself a Tallarn army.

So now I have a Preatorian army that I use as Vostryans and are built in a more competitive list style and my Tallarns (about 40% metal and about 60% painted as of posting) are a more fluffy (and personally fun) list.
