I played 40K against people less than ten times in the last twelve years. During that time there were years when I didn't even paint a single model and I have more than 1000 painted minis in my collection.

Nowadays I only play Single-player scenarios due to Covid and my reluctance to invite strangers into my home. Also lugging around a 40K army with terrain to any kind of hobby store is anathema to me. Though Blood Bowl, Rumbleslam and Necromunda would be okay, if the Covid situation would become better but we all know that this ailment will persist and not go away simply because we wish it to be.

Started late '09 and took a break from about 2015 after playing some of 7th and not liking the fact pulling out my Eldar meant eyerolls (and with uni I was a broke student). I also got pretty burnt out with painting as I plateaued and wasn't enjoying myself as much as I was.

Started again in 8th in at the back end of 2018 and it's been a game nearly every week since (excluding lockdowns etc). Found a couple of amazing gaming communities and that's been keeping my enjoyment of the hobby at an all time high.

I was forced out of the hobby around late 6th Ed. I had a Golden Child coworker that hated me. She new Tuesday nights were my game nights, and told the boss she needed that night off or she quits. Needless to say, Tuesday nights became work nights, and I've never really been fully back.

My most intense 40k gaming era was the entire 5th edition. I skipped most of 7th but that was only a year I think

Now im out since end of 8th so approaching 2 years. The current 40k rules are a bit much in my taste. I still wargame though, so i'm not out of the whole hobby.

Been playing since 1997. Took a break when 6th came out in 2012. Then they doubled down on the stupid with 7th in 2014. Came back with 8th and all signs point to another break with the utter dogs dinner that is 9th…

Think I stopped playing somewhere in 4th edition, maybe 5th. I know I skipped 6th and the vast majority of 7th due to playing FOW instead. Sold off everything, and then somehow came back due to a few friends playing. I picked up the Eldar ghost warriors army box as my starter (always loved wraith units). I still play Team Yankee but haven't played FOW for well over a year (although have a game lined up for next week). I generally struggle to play multiple game systems but I think I can handle balancing 40K, TY and FOW.

Obsessively played 1st and 2nd, tried 3rd, didn't like it so dropped it for other games. Was alerted to 40k again in 7th with GSC coming back but didn't play until 8th which I quite enjoyed. Haven't been able to get into 9th and not enjoying it so apart from a random game for whichever friend to give them an opponent and a watching brief to see if it improves, I am back to playing other stuff.

The last time I played a 40k game was around 18 years ago. I moved to a new city and within a few weeks of that happening GW closed the local store and the only local club I could find was on at a time I couldnt attend. Then rule changes happened, i couldnt be bothered to buy them, rules changed again and again, armies changed - just never got in to playing again.

I love the lore so keep up with the books as best I can, I play a few computer games, but with the new indomitus magazine coming out, I decided to start poainting models again. Quite enjoying it but don't know if i'll bother playing again.

I bought the 5th ed rules book then never used it. Rejoined somewhere in 6th. I didn't leave from lack of interest but from shifting priorities as I had just moved out for the first time. Eventually I missed painting and stumbled upon a new play group.

Tail end of 3rd edition until the end of 7th/start of 8th. So... Around 18 years or so. I did look at getting back in around 5th I think, 2007, but it didn't materialize.

From roughly 1 year after 8th came out until the present day. Everything about 8th ruined the game for me but it took a year of failing to overcome the brick wall of boredom that is new 40k for me to run out of steam and give up investing effort into the hobby. Unless something major happens with GW leadership to shake up what they are doing, I doubt the game will change to be more to my taste. Maybe some day Ill get around to making a homebrew ruleset to play with some friends and reignite that passion for the hobby.

I stopped sometime in 3rd. Not sure when, but it was before Tau. And not deep in as I felt the change of vehicle rules were not that nice.

Played a little Blood Bowl, but not any 40k in a looong time.

Got caught in a little Kill Team and eventually felt like I was missing my tanks, so got back to 40k in 2020, when I had enough hobby time to get my tank army bulked out and tuned for 9th.

Guessing it was 1998 to 2020, so about 22 years gap.

I'm on a several month leave currently mostly because I'm over matched play. I'd love to get a comfy garagehammer narrative group going but I haven't found anyone in my area who is down really. I still play a lot of 8th Ed fantasy and Battletech though and have been eyeing 40k again but my fantasy and btech groups are all narrative so it's hard to get the motivation to search for people when I already have them in differe t systems.

20 years. Don't do it. Keep your stuff. If I could have my old ork army back i'd be a very happy/rich man. That said, there is something to be said for starting again fresh when you want to, without the baggage of old armies/books etc. Whatever happens, try not to regret it. Also, play blood bowl.

1987 to 2014 Played. GT pro circuit level. But I pretty much stopped at 5. Tried to get on 6th but hated the rule sets. I don't like the dumbed down rule sets and the GW tax that people pay for their plastic crack. Make no mistake I had fun while the rules were a set of rules that involved strategy and REAL customization. Remember Scion of Mars people??? I'm not even mad at my expenditures over the years as that was the price to be paid to keep your mind active. I had fun and that was what counts for me.

There is a problem with businesses in the UK and their attitude of doing business in the UK. I've stopped all together doing business in the UK and gone elsewhere globally. GW, as a business has the "small man's mentality syndrome".

So I took my hobby money account and bought another piece of property with it instead of buying more plastic crack. You see I'm one of those whales people keep talking about except this guy as lots of money through his various sorts of investments. I even bought a few shares way back then. Now I invest into REAL corporations that does not use their company as an ATM machine.

I still have my armies and some of them are on Display. My now very expensive Juan Diaz Collection that seems to rise in price every year. Why is that??? Oh yea its made out of pewter. It has value besides just playing a table top game and held its value for 27 years.

This is a game and only a game for people who have the luxury for it. Games Workshop seems to forget about that aspect and keeping increasing their prices while giving lip service to the masses.

Every once in a while I come to this site to say hi to some of the people I know who is still here. But until GW comes out with a set of viable rules... a lot of us are not coming back.

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

Longest break was 03-12. I had kept most of my stuff boxed up, and pulled it out.
Currently coming back after a 4 year break. Pulled my stuff out once again. Deciding which projects to finish, and which ones to get rid of it.

Towards the end of 8th, after I'd finally gotten the CSM codex I'd wanted for ages and then they nerfed it into oblivion with yet more primaris releases I took a hiatus to work on AT and other projects. My last game was on August 23rd of 2019. I intended to be gone until the new year, but Covid happened and I still have yet to play a single game of 9th edition. So it's been a little over two years now. :(

Started at the start of 6th, played weekly until the start of 8th where I kind of lost interest. I was.... not uncomfortable, but not in love with the changes that 8 brought, although I've gradually come back around to it. I think over the course of 8th I essentially took a 2 and a bit year break, not entirely but no painting and maybe a little period of 3 or 4 games over a couple weeks followed by another year away.

I'm trying to get back into the hobby, I've been really into kitbashing my orks and testing out LED setups for vehicles. Trying to start playing again.

About 6 years.

Started in 2000, stopped 03 just after the eye of terror campaign and then picked it up again in late 2009/early 2010. Not had many breaks since then and usually have a few games a year.

It wasn't anything to do with the rules that brought me back/got me to leave. It was all social/lifestyle based. I left when my regular opponents and I started to get serious with school and returned when more of my friends picked it up and I had a little more income and time (ironically during 3rd year uni). I kept my models so had painted armies ready to go.
