Looking at Foundation, the story becomes a lot more interesting with characters of wildly varied backgrounds. it also allows you to cast parts with far more choices. the core to Bond isn't that he's a sex hound, it's that he will use anybody to advance his mission. A female bond would work just fine, and show different interactions.

I'm personally baffled by this idea that a fem Bond wouldn't be allowed to have Bond girls. Pretty sure girl-on-girl will go over even better with whatever demographic cares about hot chicks in Bond films, and we can throw in 'lesbians can be sex hounds too, why not' for good measure! It's a diversity double whammy! Everyone wins.

Well, yeah. That comes as a natural result of gender-swapping Bond. Beefcake instead of cheesecake.

Bond's psychotic in any metric that matters. Killing in cold blood on a regular basis does that to people. Treating 'enemies of the state' as cardboard cutouts to be eliminated is part of the job. Once you go there, seeing people you're sexually attracted to as toys for your amusement isn't that big a step.

Long and short. Bond is not a hero and should not be expected to behave like one.

Agreed. This is true of the majority of reboots that either race-swaps or gender-swaps existing and established characters.

It basically would be? Every new actor reinvents the Bond character.

The Craig films make it out like Bond isn't even Bond's real name. It's just a moniker, like 007. If one wanted to be creative, we could assume each new actor is a new 'Bond' and the name has simply been carried over from the original (the character from the books) as the decades have passed. Each actor has played the character differently anyway. Lance is right on this one. Complaining about the integrity of Bond's character is complaining about something that's never really existed. The character's been continually adapted to fit in with mainstream trends. A chick bond would just be another new trend to throw at the name.

Well if you ask me, I want a period piece.

To me Bond belongs in the swinging 60s, just like Sherlock Holmes belongs in gaslit London or the Lone Ranger in the Old West.

They've kind of floundered with the character since the cold war ended so take him back to the roots.

A camera in a cigarette lighter is a lot more interesting before everyone had a camera in their phone (and a phone in their pocket). Various supervillains make more sense in the 'eve of destruction' era of the Cold War.

Maybe not a popular opinion but that's mine.

Is that a troll post?

Lets turn Wonder Woman in her next movie into a twelve-year-old gay boy. This cunning, new and brave change will honour the franchise for sure.

Not at all. Female Bond has actually been discussed by the producers, after Craig suggested it. There was even a rumour about Gillian Anderson being a candidate for that role.

Wonder Woman's character is defined as a woman, and is based around the emancipation of women, James Bond is just a charming secret agent. There are also women that are called James, as their actual name or just nickname for Jamie (see actress Jamie King, as an exmple )

I agree. Classic James Bond is a character from the 60s, and maybe the 70s. Amazing of course, but completely out of context in a 2021 story. To have a current Bond franchise that shares many similarities with those movies from the 60s also the new movies should be set in the 60s. If you want to set the movies in the present days you have to update Bond's character. That's why I think Craig's Bond is perfect. The movies he's in maybe are not that good (Quantum and Spectre mostly), but that's not the actor's fault.

She definitely should! But a different gender Bond is already a huge next step, to change the character's sexual orientation on top of that might be too much.

Might, as there was a line in Skyfall, during a conversation between Craig and Bardem, in which Bond suggested he was open to (or have even tried already) homosexual experiences.

I can agree with this. Taking Bond back to the 60s is probably he best thing that can be done. No cell phones. Hiding stuff inside of stuff being the height of gadgetry at the time.

I'd watch period Bond. Heck, I'd watch even more retro Victorian Bond. There were plenty of intrigues in 19th Century Imperial Britain that could make good stuff.

Absolutely this.

Zero tolerance for woke soy-boy hippy 'everyone is equally good' 'winning is bad' 'cancel-culture' currency.
Bond is what would today be considered an example of "toxic" "white" masculinity.
He is better than others and knows it, overcomes adversity and doesn't show it.

Gender-swapping Bond is mentally slowed as he is the central and most important figure of the entire franchise. The franchise is even CALLED James Bond.

You can swap Starbuck in BSG but not him. Doesn't matter who had the idea it still is utterly rotten. This is how you do it when you want to have a female spy movie:

Angelina Jolie has been approached in the past to become a Bond girl but she refused and demanded to be able to play the lead role. So what did they do? They created their OWN spy universe and she got to play a spy named Salt.

I have the movie on DVD and imo it's a good movie but apparently for the people in charge it wasn't good enough to create a long running franchise like it was the case with Bond.

Another example would be the movie Atomic Blonde. It's one of my favourite spy movies and Charlize Theron did an AMAZING job being the main protagonist. I am still waiting for a sequel for this one.

So what do we learn when we want to have a female agent spy movie? Genderswapping Bond?
HELL NO, do your own thing and it will be a success if done well. The lack of creativity nowadays really hurts as much as the constant demand to genderswapping fictional main characters.

Let’s be honest, though. None of the Craig Bond films was good enough to start a franchise on their own. If it wasn’t for the already extant fandom and a healthy sales bump for the back catalogue, QOS would either never have been made or would have been the last film made.

The reason to genderswap Bond would be because you’re out of fresh ideas for Bond but you have an Atomic Blonde-level script but you won’t make a billion dollars off an Atlmic Blonde sequel while you can if you use the name Bond.

Studios wouldn’t be so obsessed with franchises and older IP if the audience supported these “new characters” you would prefer instead of just buying a ticket for the next installment of some soulless, bloated franchise movie.

Casino Royale is, IMO, a good enough film to start a franchise with.

QOS probably kills said franchise, admittedly, but CR does a great job of building a base for a franchise.

I wouldn't start a franchise with Skyfall or Spectre, but that's not the point of those films.

QOS kind of did almost kill it didn't it? It wasn't even a year after Casino Royale that QOS was being hyped, but then it was 4 year wait between QOS and Skyfall, then another 3 years for Spectre, and 6 years for No Time to Die.

I remember when I was young every Bond film was a block buster and we got one frequently every 2 or so years.

KidKyoto's maybe onto something that Bond just doesn't have the milage in a post-Cold War world that he used to. I think there's also just more competition in entertainment. I definitely felt like after QoS though there was a lot of uncertainty over when the next Bond film would be and not the kind of eagerness to keep capitalizing on a profitable franchise that existed before QoS. Skyfall seemed to renew enthusiasm only for it to tank again after Spectre.

QOS was made during the middle of the writers strike with Craig and the director coming up with shots, dialog, and plot each day on the set doing the shooting.

QOS is frankly amazing considering how it was made.

As was pointed out above, Bond isn't exactly a character full of depth. Indeed, he seems more a code-name for a variety of agents, not one singular agent over the past sixty years. Assigning that name to a woman agent isn't all that big a stretch, especially considering seduction is one of Bond's most reliable tools.

I'm hoping they go for a gender swap so it bombs and the Bond franchise can finally be retired.

I thought it would happen in the new movie, but I guess the studio execs got cold feet and brought Craig back.

I would have personally said yes, but even he admitted he got too old for the role (He was quite lovely in person too). He could have done a good gritty Bond as well. North Sea Hijack was basically him playing a gritty, Bond-esque character.

So, he played a Bond-type character in a film without the Bond franchise branding and it failed to become a successful franchise. Hmmm, I wonder why studios keep rebooting and reimagining recognizable properties.

That would probably backfire. People would see it just for the controversy. And if the story/acting/action is even halfway decent, she’d be Bond for the next five movies. Considering what the Bond franchise has survived, she would need to be Evan Hanson bad in a film that makes Rise of Skywalker look like The Usual Suspects to kill the franchise. For a decade if you’re lucky.

Oh how's this elevator pitch...

It's 2023 and a new female 007 has just been appointed. Her first case has ties to a case investigated by her predecessor from the 60s, James Bond. Action switches to the past to fill us in on what happened. Action switches back to the present for the 3rd act. The resolution has her tracking down James Bond-1965 (who would be, what 80~90 now?) and getting his wisdom and his blessing. A background photo shows him marrying a black woman. He mentions a grandson in the secret service. The end.

There, in one film you get a gender swapped Bond, swinging 60s and set up for a black Bond. And if it flops, easy to fix. Female Bond dies in the first 5 minutes, Grandson (who can be white or black) gets the number.

I went back and watched all the Craig Bond films, and it is pretty interesting how they al fit together to see the "evolution" of Bond as a character. They all have their place to go from "new to the Job" to the Grizzled Bond many of us grew up with.

When you watch Casino and QoS solace back-to-back they dove tail excellently with one another. I agree 100% with Lance on that score.

Not everything had to become a franchise, especially back then. The one and done films were quite common back then.
