I still say Tuz-ee-nch for Tzeench although I believe it’s prounced chenk….

And I have been saying cust-owed-s but recently heard them called cust-owed-ees

Sorry if my phonetics aren’t very good

English needs an overhaul to normalize pronunciations and spelling, a lot of words are spelt the same but sound different or use different words to make the same mouth sounds.

Tzeentch is Siench. The owner of Blue Table Painting called Tzeentch Tuzeench and Khorne Kahorn as a joke.

Custodies according to lord commander Duncan from an old GW video, same as Astarties. Custoweds seems right according to google translate, If you google translate from latin it becomes Ast-arts and Cu-sto-des.

In a 40k game Leman Russ was pronounced Leman Rus instead of Leman Ros which is the only one I've ever used or heard used previously.

Same here. The "T" is silent, like the "D" in Django .

And the "H" in Catachan.

Really? Do you pronounce it Cata-kan?

Yes. It was in a WD a long time back (10+ years). It is pronounced Katakan apparently.

I agree. The current English BRB is too full of ambiguities and questions. They've been writing it since 1884, they've had plenty of time to get it right by now.

I say this as an Englishman (I don’t know why I have the Stars and Stripes next to my handle…. Can’t find the button)

But English is a language a for a group of people who all want to be different but all want to be right. The language is a total compromise of regional dialects.

Near me there is a river and they (English people near the river) can’t agree how to pronounce the name of the river so the name change as it move across regional borders and at one point in the rivers journey they have an annual croquet match and the winner gets to determine what they river will be called for the next 12 months.

It’s like something Tolkien would have written about the shire….

As a German the latin is easy, you can read it exactly like german. The hard part was when GW stopped translating english unit names in 7th/8th (they trabslate again since 9th). Noxious Blightbringer? Sloppity Bilepiper? Foetid? Guilliman? Putrifier? Myphitic Blight hauler? (even the translator didn't understand the word Myphitic so it stayed even in 9th ). Spoilpox Scrivener probably flows better when you're drunk.

The first time I heard GW's pronunciation of "Row Boot TEE" I threw up in my mouth a little bit. I've since come to accept that GW's vision of the future really is "grimdark". =(

I tend to use (Roman) Latin when pronouncing GW's Imperial stuff. So:

Cust-o-des (with 'des' sound how the Japanese pronounce 'desu', barring the regions that don't silent the 'u'). 'Cus-toads' that I hear a lot bothers me, haha.

A-dep-tus A-star-tes (with 'tes' being pronounced like how fans pronounces the abbreviation for The Elder Scrolls).

Arr-bii-tes (like A-star-tes)

Tzeentch (Zeench)

Tear-a-nids

Druk-hari (rather than Dru-kari)

Lazgun (rather than 'lass-gun')

Probably my most hilarious one: Lemon Russ (rather than, what I'm told, is 'Lee-man Roose').

Correct. I believe Rick Priestley said somewhere the pronunciation of Tzeentch is an onomatopoeia of the sound of a wizard casting a spell.

To further confirm that, there was an article in the late 90s in WD called “Putting the tzap back into Tzeentch”, and that pun would not make sense unless it was pronounced “Zeen- ch”.

I'm pretty sure the correct approach is to roll a d6 before trying to pronounce Tzeentch, and the number you roll determines which of the six different letters is silent that time...

I'm a simple man: Laser is pronounced lay-zer, it's a laser-gun, I drop the middle syllable, las-gun.

You guys don't do anything weird with the 'chain' part of chainsword, do you?

The verb form "lase" already exists, though. So anyone with a thorough command of language would have gone with "lasegun" if that's how they wanted the word "lasgun" to sound.

Roboute Guilliman... i'm surprised only one person has posted about this so far.

I listen to audiobooks rather than read books so I come across all sorts of pronounciations I wasn't expecting.

I did read the Horus Heresy books before moving over to audiobooks and I remember pronouncing torgadon in my head as torg-adon rather than tor-gadon but it's with Roboute Guilliman that i've heard the strangest pronounciations. There have been three im aware of.

Rob-boot Gil-lee-man
Rob-boot-tay Gil-lee-man

and my personal favourite

Row-Boat Goo-lee-man - I swear, there is an audio book out there somewhere where he is called this. I forget which one it is, its not in the heresy series unless its a short story, but its there, somewhere.

Then of course their is the mispronounciation and spelling of "The Lion El Johnson", which in fact should be "The Liar El Johnson" - For Luther, and Caliban.

I honestly can't stand the cuss-toads pronunciation. Or even worse: cuss-toad for singular. By that logic you'd have to pronounce Astartes like as*-tarts.
It's cus-toe-dees both singular and plural, or custodian.

Just to clarify, when you are spelling out “Gil-” is that with a hard G like “Gate” and “Gordon” or a soft “Giant” and “Gillette”?

I remember reading a book review for the first Eisenhorn novel where the user complained that some ragtag cultists were able to kill multiple custodes in the first chapter, when they were actually killing custodians of a burial complex. Small changes like those have the potential to confuse people, even if "custodian" makes perfect sense as a singular form.

Its one of those names where I wonder if GW new it was a word and used it anyway, or if they just thought it was unique.
Which, of course, makes me wonder whose lover he was.
