No, i'm not a fan of proxies, it's not my thing. I'm happy paying GW prices it's just a case of finding the best value within those prices that's all

look at GSC cultists, its the same kit as Cadians x10 + HWT with GSC upgrades, its cheaper than the other 2 kits combined. Also the new cadian kit has loads more weaponry options and heads to make your army more personal. Once you've build with what you have you can look into bits on ebay to make more men, with legs and torso you'll have your conscripts.

It's not "loads more weaponry options".

It's 3. Plasma, melta, sniper for the squad.
Sergeant then gets Bolt and Plasma Pistol plus Boltgun and Power Sword options.

"the bare minimum"

Can't speak for anyone else, but as a big Cadian fan...I'm perturbed by the Cadian Shock Troop kit they're selling right now. They made a big to-do about the new upgrade frame and promptly locked it into the box going forward.

I've got the FW Respirator Upgrades so it's not a huge deal to me overall, but it irks me seeing other factions get their basic Troop kit updated to be less of an assembly hassle(Looking at you Orks!) or to contain more options(Fire Warriors...) while the Cadians have just kinda been there.

Not sure where you'd find the best price these days. I feel your about 15 years behind in buying Cadians at the best price.
If it were me and I had the cash to spend I would just buy a "pre-owned" Cadian collection second hand and add a bit to it, what ever I felt was missing or new units next year when they drop. I'd strip and repaint everything but I'd just buy what ever looked like the most models for the least cost.

There's no reason to pay full price for GW models at this point.

Best of luck.

Depends what you’re in it for really.

I like the models
I enjoy putting them together
I’m enjoying assembling a box full of stuff that “might come in handy” bit likely never will

There’s always economic ways of buying stuff, I mean a defence force is better value than individual items that’s all I mean.

Some people like proxies some like 3d printing - that’s not something I enjoy all take different things from the hobby and that’s all good, whatever works for you

Because quite frankly there is no value in it. Its literally like youre asking how best to optimise your DVD purchases to watch your favorite shows rn - most of the responses are gonna be 'dawg netflix is like the cost of 1 dvd'.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Buy the bundle type boxes: Defense Force, Bastion, Start Collecting or similar. Then eBay/resell the parts you don't want; convert and/or bits swap for the weapon options you're missing. Probably the most economically effective way to build a force - might not be the 'best' force, but it depends on what you're going for I suppose.

^ This. Seriously, just this. Third party models are objectively better quality models priced at at least the same. I say "at least" because you can generally get precisely what you want with third parties (ergo just buying plasma guns / melta guns / ect), where as with GW you have to buy an entire box to get one more of a certain kind of gun.

If you absolutely insist on refusing to see sense? Then here's the best way to do it:

#1: Go onto the GW site.
#2: Try to put things in the shopping cart to get what you need and as little "extra" stuff you don't want as possible.
#3: Click "Check Out" and put in your credit card information.

If that doesn't sound like the advise you're looking for, there's another thing you can try. It's got an extra step though, so try not to get confused:
#1: Go onto Ebay.
#2: Bid on (and hopefully win) auctions that have just what you need, getting as little "extra" stuff you don't want as possible.
#3: Stick a few "Buy Now" lots into your shopping cart, trying to get little "extra" stuff you don't want as possible.
#4: Click "Check out" and put in your credit card information.

Snark not withstanding, seriously go third party. From the super-premium (and beautiful) Victoria Lamb stuff to the more wallet-friendly bulk Death Fields, and everything in between, Guard literally have more third party options than any other 40k army. If you absolutely refuse to make use of the tools available to you, then just go navigate the GW webstore.

I'd just say eye the bundles and eye good ebay deals or store deals for new kits.

If rumor is to be believed there will be some new new kits coming this year, when ? Who knows when or if it's accurate.

Sad as it may be I'm actually looking forward to some new, hopefully awesome looking and useful, tanks.

Oh and new plastic rough riders, a man can dream.

It sounds like people are trying to draw you in a direction you don't want to go.
To get brand new GW Imperial Guard/Astra Militarum at the best prices, only buy from independent retailers, who sell with a minimum of 20% of rrp. Never purchase direct from GW.
Ebay can also sell new kits at slightly better than 20% discount, but watch out for shipping costs. And if you can get to them, you can purchase brand new kits at bring and buy sales usually attached to wargaming events, and you can get absolute bargains if your quick. I appreciate all this could be deemed to be generic advice for any miniature purchases

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

Honestly after the last reply I’ve just ignored the thread and the forum, if people feel the need to get “snarky” then I tend to just leave them to it.

The question was based largely around platoon/company/regiment structure and how to buy to fulfil that but there’s no real answer to that until I build that information for myself. I found some old source material there showing the number of certain tanks in a certain detachment and how that fits into the regiment as a whole which was of interest.

The whole “buy third party or you’re not seeing sense” is really just a personal thing and hey people can spend their money how they choose and I’ll do the same

Krieg! What a hole...

Bits resellers are good source, too, if you want to customize your vehicles and troops. If you want a more armored infantry look with a few vet squads, sprucing up their Chimeras with extra kit stowed on it would go a long way to make their rides most distinct while maintaining the overall aesthetics.

your mind

cultists is a good idea.

Like da boss, I also built a metal with some plastics guard force these past few years. Some I had been carting around for decades. Others came from eBay. Some from Element or Wayland, I think…

There’s no real consistency there. Modern lore is that every regiment has the organization that works for it, with companies as small as maybe a hundred men ranging into the thousands.

Back in the day, there was more structure. The size of s regiment was tied to what a single troop ship could carry, or roughly 3000 men. These divided into ten companies, most having six platoons of five squads each.

Even this allows for plenty of variation. IIRC, a more recent codex had cadians running five platoons of five squads. Either way, for a line infantry company you’ll want more squads than you’ll use in a normal sized game.

I follow the Tank Company and Superheavy Company lore from yore more slavishly than others might.

But it is still great lore imho

I would also add in like others have said, your TO&E for Imperial Guard has changed from edition to edition. I am hoping they reinstitute platoons back into the Astra Militarum. For a "horde army", 8th edition did not make the IG very hordely, with purchasing individual squads.

But with that being said, every Regiment in the lore has had different TO&E requirements. Whether due to a population boom, a constant drain within a warzone, or combined regiments made from heavily sustained losses. Do what you will.

I play 91st Cadian Brigade, "The Glorious Sentinels", from the Infantryman's Primer Handbook. I totally wrote up a complete TO&E at Brigade level. Then I chose to break all down to Squad level. Beauty of it is, you can choose to go as detailed or abstract as you want to. You also can make your regiment as large or as small as you like.

Cowards will be shot! Survivors will be shot again!

Because platoons would somehow make it different?

Frigging lol.

People can keep saying "horde army! horde army!" but they always seem to forget that it wasn't just "lots of infantrymen" as a rule for Guard. It was "lots of things, period, on the field" for Guard.

Heavy Weapons Squads, squadrons of Sentinels, squadrons of tanks, abhumans, cheap but durable-ish transports, etc.

That is the Guard.

Very true. Let me further explain. The Astra Militarum should be about fielding Platoons of Infantry, and Squadrons of everything else.

The only exceptions to this are veteran Squads, and Mechanized Infantry.

Cowards will be shot! Survivors will be shot again!

Nah. Not unless literally every other army gets their Troop choice tied to three other boxes minimum.
