The reason for dakka languishing is the general death of forums, and the fact that dakka does not do mobile browsing well IMO

Of any site I have used in the last few years this is the worst one to use on mobile of any of them. At least all the other sites that look like they are from the earlier 2000s have the text stay the same size. Only on Dakka do I have to zoom in on half the pages. Any page with pictures and it gets even worse. Have to zoom in AND scroll sideways.

As long as this is the case I can't see how dakka can avoid a death spiral to oblivion. Had I not used this site over a decade ago, long before I used Reddit, I would never have been an active user.

The notion that 40K should become something like an e-sport is absurd. Let those "competitive" people go to whatever sites they want.

Same. Dakka is completely unusable on mobile.

Dakka is indeed a very nice site.
But it appears to loose steam as there are other places out there like Reddit or Goonhammer which provide more opportunities for competitive play.
Look for instance at
https://www.reddit.com/r/WarhammerCompetitive/ (it combines 40k, 30k and AoS)
or the Goonhammer breakdowns of codices.

To counteract this, I suggest to introduce a thread for ''Competitive Play'' (besides ''Tournament Discussion'' or merging of both).
Otherwise, an exodus to other sites for certain users is likely.

Opinions?

The Dakka forum software is out of date and it shows its age with issues like this. I've been wanting to spin off to another site ( I built one ), but getting momentum to get people to participate is incredibly difficult.

Reddit is useful, but it is a terrible place to have sustained conversations as is Facebook and ultimately a true forum is still the best place to have deeper discussions.

It isn't anything to do with e-sport and everything to do with grognards willing everything into older editions. Some of us are forward focused and like to think in terms of what is possible for the here and now.

In response to the OP? To be honest, I think that may just create division.

Dakka has always had a competitive bent (as in people into their tournaments and wanting to make a good showing). And it’s on those of us who aren’t so fussed to get our heads round the fact “none of us are playing this game wrong”. Well. Unless you’re trying to shove the models up your nose. You need your nostrils for super important single D6 rolls.

Could it be the huge single thread is the problem in itself? I've been put off posting on them as it seems to get lost amongst any previous discussions, wouldn't be surprised if others have felt the same.

If you look at the Forum Index, you'll find:

Tournament Discussions
40k Army Lists
40k Battle Reports
40k Tactics
40k You Make Da Call (for when gak goes sideways)
40k General Discussion

I'm not poo-pooing your idea, I'm just wondering what you would change or do different.

As for the Exodus, that ship has sailed. I stopped posting because this place became work-blocked, not because I didn't enjoy it here. But I don't recall this ever being a hot-bed of the uber-competitive groups. But perhaps that was before my time. With Frontline Gaming seemingly carrying the competitive WarHammer 40k banner, I think the more competitive folks are listening to their multiple weekly podcasts and chatting in their discussion forums, youtube channels, and so forth.

Reece and crew are doing a bang up job of that, as an aside. I wish they could get the Horus Heresy events going. I'd like to be able to play that outside of AdeptiCon.

But I think the opportunity to prevent an exodus has already passed.

It seems like the vast majority of fruitful discussion has moved to places like Discord as well. A lot of folks that I know that used to Haunt Dakka primarily use discord now (Including myself)
This is increasingly true of many things I've found. Old forums like Dakka are products of their time, they have a place, but the world changes, the game changes, and scenes move on. Where once there was Warseer, 40konline, and onceuponatime even GW official forums (gone for 15 years now last month), and the rise of things like FB Groups and Reddit have risen and begun to fall, Discord is the new scene for a lot of fandoms and gaming.

With regards to a Competitive forum, I guess the question would be what would it offer that the existing Tactics and Tournament discussion areas do not?

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.
