However, I wont explain why. That would be.... rude.

Maybe the answer is to spend less time on Dakka and more time painting/playing

Dakka? No. Various YouTube channels like GMG? Yup.

I'll second the opinion that this site has made me purchase less.

I'll explain why, I don't mind if people think that's rude.

It's because I can make more informed purchases. Reading the opinions people have about certain products tells me more about the product than marketing will. Also seeing some of the childishness on display in a non-branded forum reminds a person that these are all just games and that they are meant to be fun, and personal enjoyment is not derived from material wealth or procurement. Buying new toys does not make one happy. Painting them and rolling dice beside them afterwards while imagining they are chopping each other up is what makes one happy. And you really don't need new toys all the time to make that happen.

Well said. A lot of fan sites are manipulated by the sources they are fans for, and turn them into a consumption engine. Instead of a site reveling in what they are fans of to begin with.

A perfect, and far larger and more egregious example of this, is Board Game geek.com It's is supposed to be a database for boardgames, and it is, but the main drive seems to be a marketing engine for the industry, and it is huge. The industry is huge, the marketing is huge, the userbase is huge.

This is made all the more humorous by GW's attempts at curtailing how fans celebrate the very thing they are marketing, and you have this grotesque monstrosity of oxymorons.

Well grotesque monstrosities of oxymorons is pretty damn grimdark if you think about it. I can't help but sympathize with the space elfs now. I've become elegiac! The only question that remains is whether or not to live out the rest of my life with nobility and strive towards reclaiming the golden age, or succumb to the darkness within.

Dakka Dakka seems to be anti-spend and "buy GW ASAP" and a healthy dose of 'is it worth it' talk. I prefer Dakka over Reddit sometimes for reviews/discussions due to the conversation not being weighted in one direction.

I mean that's probably a good thing that Dakka discourages you from consuming miniature products. Last I checked white metal, lead, resin, finecast, plastic and all are NOT healthy things to eat!

Although the rulebooks at least would be relatively safe and a good source of roughage.

I buy better stuff due to Dakka, as I am able to check against wisdom of those who know better before jumping too fast at what isn’t necessary while picking out the real gems. Helpful.

Rumors threads are helpful for deciding if I want to pick something up. The Kill Team thread give me a good idea how much I'd like to pick up a box set for the models or the terrain.

You can't even compare Dakka with some other social media, chiefly places like reddit where anyone with a burner profile can say any unfounded nonsense they like, replaced with a new account the next week.

Here you do get regular posters who are invested in the forum - which is a nice thing, it can be fun talking about the hobby. I get to know other posters by what they like/don't like and respect their opinions on stuff (or at least know when to take notice, in the cases where our interests align). So I actually think it's a really useful, supportive function if you are heavily invested in wargaming as a hobby.

Dakka does not influence me too much..... that I am consciously aware of anyway.

Usually dakka doesn't sway me in any purchasing direction, however there is one exception I can think of where a debate here pushed me into mathhammering out some different weapons, resulting in me going all-in on Plasma Cannons for my Devastators back in 8th.
