I mostly agree: I like a lot of Gundam series and OVAs, but for me, War in the Pocket is basically the culmination of the themes of the series. And yes, it's one of the very best OVA series ever created.
Started IBO last night, as a show to settle me before bed.
It’s…alright. Being modern anime I am struggling a bit with my General Distaste toward anime styling. But the story is pretty good, and nice to see it not hiding behind allegory in terms of “but the enemy Mobiles are piloted by kids and I’m not at all OK with attacking them”.
Biscuits two sisters are testing my patience though. That’s the sort of anime styling which doesn’t gel with me. But given they’re barely in it so far, not a deal breaker.
About to start work for the day (by which I mean log in, close the cases I need to close, exceed quarterly target and then get back to watching She Hulk), so will save the next episodes for after work, so it can enjoy my full attention.

Word of caution: IBO is pretty dark. It is great (I like the first season more than the second, but still, great), but it's also quite dark. For Gundam standards.

Holy hyperbole!
nah. It's told well, doesn't overstay its welcome, and has strong themes and provokes an earned emotional response from the viewer. Not only that, but it is a self contained story that can be seen by anyone - a Gundam fan will recognize its importance in capturing the feel of the UC stories and non Gundam fans don't need any knowledge from outside of show itself. Very few OAVs check all of these boxes. From my personal anecdotal experience, showing my DVDs of it to friends who have no connection to Gundam or even don't like anime in general (outside of saye Miyazaki or Ghibli stuff) have all thought it was excellent. Not only that but it provides a good base point so when Gundam is mentioned in conversation they have a great experience and a good reference point to the UC in general to follow along.
I've often wished for it to be officially re-edited into a feature-length animated film and/or be used as the basis for a live action film as I believe it's the best way to introduce normal people to this world of giant robots (allowing the viewer to be thematically grounded to characters' personal storylines in order to make a universe with giant robots more believable)
"...and special thanks to Judgedoug!" - Alessio Cavatore "Now you've gone too far Doug! ... Too far... " - Rick Priestley "I've decided that I'd rather not have you as a member of TMP." - Editor, The Miniatures Page "I'd rather put my testicles through a mangle than spend any time gaming with you." - Richard, TooFatLardies "We need a Doug Craig in every store." - Warlord Games "Thank you for being here, Judge Doug!" - Adam Troke
It is nice to see it up....although i already own it on laser disc since it first came out in Japan (back in the 90s having a laser disc player was a fantastic way to save money as they were far cheaper than VHS tapes).
