Can someone explain to me why disappearing helmets is such a discussion point every time we see an MCU trailer? Of all the insane comic book lunacy that goes into these movies, what is it about that specifically that gets people so riled up on Dakka?
Put simply, Mighty Morphin' Nano-Helmets are a concept that are used in the most ridiculous manner - none more egregiously than in the first Black Panther movie - where to get over the whole "Actors hate having their faces covered!", they just vanish whenever they have to deliver dialogue. I mean, can you imagine a WWII film where every time the troops are talking they stop and remove their helmets and then put them back on to resume fighting?

It's especially galling when they cleverly came up with a way to show us a face without removing the helmet (Iron Man's in-helmet camera shots), yet they still have him making that thing vanish in the latter films. It leads to weird disjointed scenes where people remove their helmets/masks in places where they shouldn't (T'Challa's return in Endgame... Starlord's return in Endgame... Spider-Man's return in Endgame, Okoye at the end of BPII) as well as terrible compositing shots, like when Thor shows up in Infinity War and, for no reason at all, Banner has the helmet of the Hulkbuster suit fold away so he can deliver a line of dialogue (that shot looks awful). And now we have a new villain who is known for having a blue face, and they give him a blue face, but he won't have it whenever he decides to have a chat with someone.

It's why I give props to Chris Evans, who manages to keep his helmet on through most of his fight scenes in every movie he's in, including all throughout the final fight in Endgame.

I do wonder how much of it is actors, and how much of it is studio. I'm remembering the Stallone Dredd movie, where Stallone reportedly was set against removing his helmet to stay true to the character, but the studio wanted his face visible because they paid so much for him to be in the movie...

In Karl Urban's movie, he did keep the helmet on (and was a much better movie and not because of the helmet ).

I’ve heard it said Karl demanded he keep the helmet on and would only play the role if he never took it off.

But yeah, Black Panther was the worst one for it. Doctor Fate in the new Black Adam was also really bad, and that one wasn’t even a nano helmet. He just physically removed it repeatedly during fight scenes to talk to someone.

Another featurette. I had a chuckle at the scene starting at 0:33

Especially given how far we've gone in the home movie theatre set up space.

I still love the actual theatre, as you can feed off the crowds reactions and energy a bit, or their lack of energy can be an experience too.

For energy, I have seen Star Wars at home hundreds of times but when I watched a re-release in the cinema it was a totally different, high-energy experience. When the sand person pops up bellowing and everyone just starts hooting.... great times.

I had the opposite with Thor: Ragnarok. My family and I were laughing and having a great time. Everyone else was silent, like they did not get the joke. It was weirdly even more hilarious then, and something my family still references.

I, too, love the movie theater experience. The energy of a crowd really elevates the movie. This is true for good movies, but especially true for bad and mediocre movies.

I had a blast seeing Cats in the theater. It’s a whole other experience when an audience turns on a movie, such as with Species 2 or that Bond film where he quips “I thought Christmas only came once a year”. The energy is infectious and makes the moment live in your memory.

I would also say that Avatar in 3d in the cinema was a very different experience to watching it at home.

I'm not a fan of 3D movies in general, but for all its faults Avatar was an example of it done right, and was well worth the ticket price.

I also suspect that the broad shots they've shown in the trailer for Quantumania will also translate much more impressively on the big screen to how they will look at home.

The two Marvel films the employed 3D well to compliment the film were the original Doctor Strange and Ant-Man.

Saw this tonight.

It's not in my top 5 Marvel movies, but I thought it was pretty great. Good action. Funny jokes. MODOK! And great Kang.

2 Post credits. One had some really amazing adaptations of some stuff from the comics. The second looked like it might have just been a scene from an upcoming show. Both have me excited for whats coming.

Audience reviews are significantly higher than critic reviews. Sitting closer to 85% than the critics 50%.

Everyone gets some good scenes even when there are 5 heroes on the good guy team. Hank in particular gets a moment where you see why he is really the best at what he does.

Really fun time.

Go to better theaters.
In my area? Every single one has tiered stadium seating with quite comfortable recliner seats. Decently spaced too.
Even in a busy showing you'd be hard pressed to feel "crowded".

And filthy? Hardly. Pre-pandemic they were reasonably clean. And reasonably cleaned between showings.
Now? They are CLEAN.

I've no qualms about going to one of my local theaters.
Now ticket prices (especially evening/peak prices).... that's a different discussion.

Usually don't care about the critic scores, but for once I think they have the right of it. Lots of issues with this movie and it's definitely a very weak start to what is supposed to be the beginning of Phase 5.

Spoiler:

This feels like a post Endgame Marvel movie in the most obvious ways. Mainly, everything is a joke. Some examples, entirely concerning MODOK: Murderous MODOK gets called a dick and promptly decides to change his ways. He dies "joking" about being an Avenger. Showing MODOK's butt for a gag. Not sure why they bothered bringing back Darren Cross for this. The CGI done for him also looks very jarring and unpolished.

In terms of stakes, for what should be the first major debut of Kang the Conqueror as a threat to the MCU, and building up to what he'll do, he's very underwhelming as a threat, which is a shame since Jonathan Majors does a decent job despite the bad script. I particularly like how poignant it is with how he goes off saying things like "Do you know how many Avengers I've killed?" and then proceeds to get punked by a single "Avenger", and it's Ant-Man at that. The fact that there are no deaths at all really hamstrings his portrayal of Thanos' replacement. As much as I dislike how Thanos beats up Hulk in Infinity War, him defeating the Hulk, Thor, and killing Loki alongside half of the Asgardians really set the tone for Thanos meaning business. Comparatively, Kang just feels like he can get defeated every movie he's in, and then you just deal with another variant of him like multi-verse whack-a-mole. Especially since he's vague about what he wants besides "conquering".

The cast overall feels bloated with Hope not really having a purpose in this movie, nor Hank barring the last part with the ants at the end.

People who are annoyed by the classic MCU nano-helmet problems will not be happy with movie as it continues those trends. Why even bother wearing masks and helmets at this point? If you tallied it up, it had probably a minute or more's worth of screen time of just characters masking up/unmasking. Even Kang who (justifiably) spends most of the movie without his helmet does it in battle. And why? His "faceplate" is fething translucent anyway so you can easily see Majors emoting!

Another younger version of an existing hero who is pretty bland. Outside of Steinfeld/Hawkeye, most of these have been misses IMO. Her speech to get everyone to fight was awful. Why have Cassie do it and not the resistance leader? How the feth does anyone in the QR know who Cassie is?

Goofy characters (Bill Murray especially.) Why do we need these? We're given no reason to care about them anyway. They're filler.

Stupid character decisions just for plot's sake. Janet doesn't tell anyone about the quantum realm? Just gives vague warnings?

So, so, so much exposition.

Scott as a giant going on a tirade about his deal with Kang felt like it went on forever and was awkward.

We know they couldn’t trap Scott in the Quantum Realm again, so why even bother suggesting it could happen again unless you're actually going to go through with it.

There's also line by Hank Pym at the end about the ants that's super random and awkward about trying to say along the lines of "Hear me out. Socialism is a good thing!". Which doesn't make sense given that in this context he's referring to a literal hive mind of insects, not humans or sapient species with individual thought. Ironically, I think this is hilarious since it unintentionally highlights how you need be mindless drones for it work the way extreme leftists believe that kind of "utopia" would work. Maybe this is to pander to the Chinese market somehow? Not sure, but I'm sure lefties will gloss over this and nod. It would be just as weird if Iron Man in IM3 in the battle with all the suits showing up said "See Pepper? Capitalism is awesome, it lets me have all these expensive toys!".

Council of Kangs in the end credits. I gotta say, this gave me a good laugh seeing how derpy the Kangs looked. It really came off as more a something that looked comical than something ominous that boded a real future threat. Missed opportunity to have a "WE WAZ KANGZ" line in there somehow to really place a comedy masterpiece as an end credit scene.

Spoiler:
I went to see it with a friend who is much more into Marvel stuff than I am currently and going off the trailers I wasn't really going to care. It was spending time with a friend and that's what mattered.
I was pleasantly surprised that the movie was really quite funny. A lot of the humour was really silly and honestly, I liked that. Paul Rudd got to be a goofy guy in a Marvel film and it was fun.
The actual plot was naff and it was clear that the movie was just a setup for Kang Dynasty which sucks. It didn't fall into the Doctor Strange trap of only making sense if you'd seen a D+ show though so that was good.
Overall, I'd watch it at home again and don't regret going to see it at the cinema

Spoiler:
No. If this Kang is/was the Kang who would become He Who Remains (and I think there is some evidence in the movie that he might be) this is long before he created Miss Minutes.

Just saw it. It was okay at best. Because it was so CGI heavy almost nothing feels like it has significance. Felt like a lot of weird for the sake of weird. Kang was good and he deserved to be in a better movie. Hope was underutilized. Janet was frustrating as a character. I did not like Cassie at all. The whole shrinking and growing while in the quantum-verse felt... extra silly.

Watched it last night and I loved it. Kang was definitely the best part of the movie, but I genuinely really dug the rest of it also. This was a better multiverse movie than MoM - not that that was hard. There's some great artistry going on with the sets and characters in the quantum realm, reminded me of Star Wars but in the best possible way. I really liked new Cassie, though I will agree that Hope didn't have much to do in this one. I thought they did a great job suggesting Janet's history in the quantum realm without relying too heavily on flashbacks, and the way they gradually pulled the curtain back on everything going on in the quantum realm was very well done IMO.

I will definitely be watching this again when it's out on Disney +

Saw it with a buddy and one of the Wonder Twins yesterday, solidly OK. Good enough.

Felt like a remake of Thor Ragnarok, and I would have liked it if the Quantum Realm looked more like Marvel's classic Microverse (from Fantastic Four and Micronauts comics) but solidly OK.

3D still gives me a headache though.

It was ok. Enjoyable enough that I wasn't upset that I saw it but not great enough to want to see it again. The QR was very imaginative while also somehow being flat.

I think this has the highest rate of magic helmet and armor appearing/disappearing. We're getting close to helmets coming off for a line reading then going back on repeatedly for a whole movie.

I admit I wasn't expecting MODOK to be who he was.

Not as bad as Love and Thunder but still to much undercutting of serious moments with humor: no tone will be allow to land.

Johnathan Majors as Kang was probably the highlight of the film. I don't think Kang have the same impact as Thanos on the audience, but Majors is definitely an engaging and talented performer.

I really liked it.

It felt like if you put the Pym family in a Rick and Morty adventure. Plus Kang/He who Remains is blatantly Rick and that was just amazing. Which has a certain charm as you’ve put those characters in a very Flash Gordon style situation. Kang is great and he does sell the character as the villain.

Stuff with Cassie and Scott just works as that’s something they’ve been building for while. There’s a lot of Giant Man in the film and that’s always a crowd pleaser. You do feel like this is connected to the wider MCU story like with Loki and I think they have telegraphed where things are going; which is great.

Not as good as MoM. Mainly because Wanda utterly steals the show in that and they had me with Wandavision; so I am incredibly biased. Kang isn’t anywhere as prominent and perhaps that’s for the best it is an Antman film first and foremost.

Far better than Thor Love and Thunder which I felt uncomfortable with how bad the humour and dialogue was at times. I wasn’t bored like I was for stretches of Black Panther 2 and well the whole of the Eternals. It’s just a good solid entry in the MCU.

Quibbles -

- More Kang. Made the comparison to Wanda in MoM. More of him wrecking things please.

- There’s a particular scene with Cassie which they could have made better by putting more buildings and such to establish the scale. Not a parking lot.

- Some clunky dialogue and jokes that fall flat.

- I would have done something different with Antman. Honestly they might end up going there in Avengers so I can’t quite prejudge that.

Gotta admit, given her voice acting credits, that's a weird one.

Warlord Twilight Sparkle or Warlord Bubbles (powerpuff girls) is a bit weird. Warlord Ben 10.

But admittedly, on the DC side of things she tends to be a bit more sinister: Harley Quinn, Raven and a couple of Bats, and a few others.
