Could probably get the platoon, some extra singles, and then round it up to make a 1k points or-so, could be a fun project! Will wait on prices to see if doable
At this point from buying the steel legion box so many times I have so many grenade launchers… it’s a shame they sucked when they cost was cheaper than a plasma gun, I think they probably suck more now.

Yeah I think all options cost the same now? So it's not the greatest option to have for special weapon, but in my case at least it would be a fun side project, more about modelling and painting them than making a super competitive army!

Fantasy armies - Retired (Tomb Kings, Vampires, Empire, Chaos Warriors/Daemons, Dark Elves)

Tyranids army - Ever evolving, but about 10k pts
Custodes - 3,500pts (Fully painted yay!)
Thousand Sons - 4,000 pts
Eldar - 3,000pts

I had an army or two of them...

I just needed some chimera's to add to their ranks.

As an army, they are fun. In Armageddon games, they are a plus.

I really could ask for some sniper rifles, and some additional weapons for them though. As was said, Grenade Launchers.. SMH. I have my fill of them, and just want to change them out for some flamers and Meltaguns.

If any regiment would be needing some love, this one would be it.

(Of course I wouldn't cry too loud if another Yarrick showed up, but that might be asking too much.)

It was always bizarre that the Steel Legion sniper model was a Necromunda release...

I had that exact issue. Never could get one, either, because it was "Special Order".

You mean the one with a basic Lasgun that was very clearly a trainee sculpt with different details from the rest of the range?

Definitely agree they should offer a pack of riflemen, so useful. Was there ever a Steel Legion Command Squad? I can't remember.

Thinking of picking up the lieutenant with the sword over his head, always liked that guy. Just because you're knee deep in mud fighting a horde of fungus monsters doesn't mean you can't do it with style.

Wasn't that a release before sniper rifles in an IG squad were a thing?

Ratlings or nothing for sharpshooters at the time?

So according to WD#248/249, there was no command squad as such. They offered deals though were you'd get enough riflemen and a Lt. to make up a command squad.

Spoiler:

Image spoilered for extreme size, but the "Command Squad Deal" was 1 each of the Commissar, Lt., Sergeant, Assault weapon and heavy weapon of your choice + a Chimera.
The army deal however came with Yarrick, an Lt, Sergeant, plasma gun and 2 riflemen as command squad.

Thinking of picking up the lieutenant with the sword over his head, always liked that guy.
Which one was the rarer of the two? The over the head guy or bolt pistol one?

I don't think any of the metal regiments had a specific "Command Squad" release, with the exception of the Vostroyans.

Thanks! I know none of the 2nd edition dudes did, but I never collected the Steel Legion.

Lots of fun trying to convert standard bearers and medics out of Tallarn missile launcher dudes, the only models with arms away from the body.

Yes, and as I pointed out earlier, the "sniper" is just armed with the standard Armageddon lasrifle.

And as Lagunpacker points out on their blog, the model has a number of details different from the rest of the Steel Legion range and so was most probably a test sculpt that wasn't meant to be released that got shoved into the Necromunda line(which was fairly common at the time).

There you go.

Command squads back then were two special weapons or a heavy weapon option, and the two riflemen, an/or medic.

KISS.

Who has some good third party figures, so I can add in some of the plastic sniper rifles?

Mad Robot has some very good Not!Steel Legion guys. Capari stormstroopers I think he calls them.
And pretty Victoria Minis has a Steel Legion equiv in the works too.

Also try Anvil Industries. They likely have the right bitz to make a close Steel Legion proxy.

62.50 in New Zealand dollars, at the current exchange rate that's 31.72 pound for a single plasma gunner / sergeant / commissar....

Ouch

Here I was planning a small 1k army out of those release just for fun. They are not yet out in Canada so don't have the price yet, and it usually not as bad as Australia, but also not always the best either so I fully expect to be majorly turned off by the prices

Guess I'll have to turn my 3D printer on.

£40 for the ten-man squad.

£19 for the Plasma gunner.

No chance.

Somebody at GW is looking at ebay prices and thinking "if they can do it, why can't we?". Utter stupidity.

EDIT: Oh, and £67 for three heavy weapon bases. Amazing.

Never bought them the first time round. Certainly wasn't going to buy them this time either.

If someone needs a Steel Legion aesthetic itch scratched, Wargames Atlantic Raumjager and/ or Mad Robot are your friends.
