IMO it sounds exactly right.
Heavy, fairly rapid firing, Imperium tech. The sound of spent cases being ejected.

I also think that the fictional Assault cannon has a lower weight of fire than IRL miniguns. hence the lack of associated whine?

It has the same or even higher rate of fire. Back in the good ole' days it even had a special rule to represent the devastating torrent of bullets chewing through everything.

Yeah, the sounds were pretty muted for all of the firearms. The AC wasn't any worse than the bolters or the lack of roaring flames from the flamer. I assumed the muted sounds of combat were a stylistic choice.

I think they were going for a 'Vietnam flashback' or 'Traumatic vision' aesthetic, which often includes hearing sounds muted, like through water, or ringing sounds overlaying it all. Like the opening beach scenes of 'Saving Private Ryan' etc.

Counterpoint: Actual audio of assault cannon is easily and readily available.

There is such a thing as an "own goal."

Or this is just a different weapon with a different rate of fire.

Then why does it so closely resemble the thing it's not?

Didn't strike me as a complaint, more a funny observation.

I think it's amusing that they've taken a mini-gun and given it sound effects akin to what your grandfather might've used against the Germans in the 1940's.

because it looks cool
GW stopped worrying about such stuff long ago, what looks "cool" combined with "cool" rules no matter if those 2 fit together and "cool" fluff that neither matches the rules nor the model

the assault cannon just looks like a gatling based weapon, but is is none, not with the barrels rotating freely and a single chamber (not sure what the correct english term is, sorry)
this is not a minigun but simply just a normal machine gun with rotating barrels, and yes this is a difference (as the minigun/gatling is basically several machine guns linked to a single feeding system)

the assault cannon is what people who have never seen how a minigun or gatling works, think it might work

If they even had a dedicated sound designer for the trailer, he was probably given like an hour to cover it with sound before its deadline, and for this it’d be mostly copy & paste sfx from existing libraries for speed. Blame the pipeline, not the people (usually).

I assumed the gunshots were muted so you could actually hear the voiceover without having your eardrums blown out.

The US military has public domain footage available on its weapons systems and troops doing exercises. Not hard to find a minigun firing. Pretty sure other nations do the same. The limiting factor is whether anyone cares enough to get it.

That doesn't mean those are high enough quality or sufficiently accessible to extract and shove into a video at short notice.

Or importantly, what the studio actually wants it to sound like.

Honestly I didn’t like this trailer much as the last. It’s a very odd trailer. The librarian popping in and out. The bit where the feeder Tyranids look up dumbly. Guilliman being outside the Eternity Gate one minute and then on the bridge of a ship the next. The last one benefits enormously from focusing on two characters directly in the fight.

Also, Guilliman, you are in charge. If you don’t like lying to the people then maybe you should tell them otherwise you are part of the problem. You can’t have the ruler of the Imperium be a smart ass on his own policies. Forgetting the Tyranids are a threat so you can fight Great Crusade 2.0; kind of on you as well. These Xenos are a lot more dangerous then the trash you fought in the Great Crusade. Maybe you thought fighting them would be easy because what do these clowns know I am a Primarch. It’s got nothing to do with the Church saying people should have hope. Like, that’s a good thing. What would be achieved by telling everybody they are screwed? Should we not discuss you being an autocrat and refusing to establish representative government? We need solutions not complaints Lord Commander.

Given that they are specifically designed for quick download by interested media, I'm going to say GW didn't care enough to even look.

Which is fine, I guess this whole thread is something of an ink-blot test. People who know what miniguns sound like and figure that GW borrowed the design because they wanted them to behave and sound miniguns are annoyed.

As for me, I think they should have dubbed in a rubber duck squeaking. That would really set the 40k universe apart!

I mean, yeah. The whole trailer noise could be dubbed over with the Benny Hill sound track and it would be JUST as powerful.

*Shrug*
It sounded fine to me. I'm not a sound technician or gun nerd or anything, but the sound effect looked "right" for the weapon.

I can understand people with more refined tastes seeing an opportunity for improvement, but I'm not about to dock points for this particular sound effect.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

But are those military clips footage or just the audio? Is the audio just of a gatling cannon, or are other sounds mixed in? That is what I mean by extracting the sound. Audio libraries are just plug and play and it'll just be a high-quality audio clip of the specific sound, no background noise etc.

I'm not saying time pressures are the reason for this, but it is plausible.

I don’t really get what the fuss is about, the sound was fine. It sounds like what I’d expect a weapon that looks like that to sound like.

As for accuracy, it’s just a sound effect. They never are accurate, take the metallic scraping noise swords make when drawn from leather scabbards in most media. It’s entirely inaccurate, but audiences expect it.

It think it sounds more like the mini gun in terminator 2 than any of the examples posted in this thread so far, and I’ve never had an issue with the sound effects in that film:

https://youtu.be/8RbL4PwTDsQ

Edit:
For what it’s worth, terminator 2 won a number of awards for the sound in the film including Oscar’s for Best Sound and Best Sound Effects Editing, so I don’t think inaccurate mini gun sound effects is lazy or that anyone screwed up. The sound effects for the Assault Cannon seem to be in good company.

Fools! The entire video has improper sound. That is the height of Tyranid invasion. There should be only muffled sounds and less visibility than that GoT episode everyone hated.
The air would be so clouded with spores and microorganisms that sound would be damped and sight limited to a few feet.
I am also in the camp that the Assault Cannon is just a rapid firing autocannon with fast barrel exchange and not a mini gun like the punisher cannon.
