Got the Herald build finished. I'll probably start paint on her soon.

NSFW (because piercings do not a modest look make)
Spoiler:

I also got some new static grass tufts to add to my bases, at least for more important models I want to spot and keep track of easy.

The shade actually matched closer than I thought it would.

Bit of a delay on paint. I want to give zenithal priming a try but the weather has not been cooperating with the rattle cans.
So in the meantime, building more of the basic legionary troops. Still need some greenstuff work but they're coming together.

The Herald is a wild model. Looking forward to seeing how it looks painted.

Thanks! Looking forward to getting her painted up and I think the weather may finally be up for spray priming so that should get started soon.

I found this spikey boy in the pile of shame. I think I did this conversion back around the end of 4th / start of 5th edition time frame. I had an idea to build a Dark Mechanicus army using space marines and allied guard units to try and get it on the table, but ultimately I only got around to building a couple test models. Not sure what happened to the others but I did find this "chaos techmarine" and thought he'd make a solid Warpsmith so I slapped him on the new offical sized base and will be getting him into paint at long last.

This army is primarily corrupted sisters and daemons but I always liked the spikey boys for the most part so the Word Bearers warband gets a few showings like this chap.

Some progress on the herald, roughly half done painting. Trying some more skin painting options because I have a 200mm tall Keeper of Secrets stand-in model in the pipeline and I'm a little intimidated by the thought of trying to get that much skin looking smooth painted. I'm not confident in layering or wet-blending it, my hands don't feel as steady as they used to be. And I'm not sure how good a wash is going to look on a model of that scale. So right now I'm leaning towards doing a series of drybrushes building up sort of like you might with layering to get a similar effect. I tried a simple 3-shade version of that on the instrument the herald is holding though the basecoat on that went on kind of thick so I'd clearly want to get a butter smooth basecoat on the big girl.

Anyway, here's the herald WIP, NSFW as usual
Spoiler:

Hoping to have her done in a couple days.
*edit* Found an Urban Legends Sophie the Succubus in the pile of shame. Think I'll try strapping a few bits of daemon prince armor on and paint her up as a daemon princess for the army (the prince kit itself will be making 2 more princes eventually). She's about half the height of the big girl and I think she'll be a good practice run for the skin painting to see how it turns out.

Finished up the Herald. She was a lot of fun to work on, but of course I slipped up at the last step. I'd forgotten that too much brush-on varnish could cause some frost / fogging and had to go back and try to fix it. I got most of it but there's still a little remaining though I don't think it's really noticeable until you get right up close.
Usual NSFW
Spoiler:

Turns out I think I got the wrong white spray primer. Same brand / finish / type as the gray, but different named line and sure enough, the paint didn't want to stick to the white primer as well as the gray. Eh, not a huge deal until I get some speed / contrast paints to give slap-chop a try so I'll probably just stick to gray spray and my brush-on white primers for now.

Also got the next 2 legionaries built and greenstuffed, ready for priming.

Progress on the squad expansion!

When those are done I'll be up to 24 models of the 50 I have planned for the first 2000 pt army (at least until 10th changes it!) So I'm debating on my 25th model for the halfway point. I have 2 or 3 options and am looking for thoughts on which to do first.

First up is a standard GW daemon prince with wings and axe. This is the prior apostle turned daemon prince who leads the Word Bearers missionary warband that adopted the corrupted sisters shortly after they fell to chaos. One of the few unconverted GW kits I'll use, though I do plan to press-mold an extra set of leg bits to eventually make a second prince model down the line.

Second option is an alternate for his spot in the list, a much older daemon princess of slaanesh that's been around since Old Night and essentially runs the daemon shrine planetoid the warband is based at. She'll be a conversion based off an old Urban Legends Sophie with copied bits from the Prince kit and some old dragon wings from the pile of shame. NSFW
Spoiler:

Third option is the Keeper of Secrets, the soul of the former cannoness taken by Slaanesh and used as the core of the greater daemon that finished the corruption of the cathedral ship and helped bring them into the word bearers fold as new pieces for the Great Game. This one is an Avatar of Shaah from Raging Heroes. Also NSFW
Spoiler:

At current pace I'll probably be ready to start on one of them around the start of next week.

Some nice models coming up. Wouldn't mind seeing either of the two ladies make it to the paint table. Envious of the Urban Sophie.

Yeah, I got lucky years ago and found her gathering dust in the small minis section of an indie bookstore. I eventually got a drawer full of various sophies because frankly they were really nice models and I just wanted to paint them someday (an impulse I imagine many are familiar with). Sadly, most of them are still there. So I think I'll go with the sophie conversion next.

I also was quite happy today to find the rest of the models in the unpacking, including my old Juan Diaz daemonettes who made it mostly intact through many moves over the years. Just a couple missing weapon / arm bits. Even found the Seekers. Then I found an old unpainted conversion of a seraphim superior as a chaos sorceress. A little tzeenchy with the mini-disc but I may find a way to work her into the roster for my current day project.

In the background you can also see the 3 legionaries WIP

I did also find the non-legends version of the sophie, but it's already built and primed so I think I'll stick to using the legends one for this project.

Got the last 3 legionaries finished up for the full squad. Rather happy with how the girls turned out. Despite the slimmer base models they still feel kinda chunky enough to be a CSM stand-in I think.

Current plans still call for 2 more squads of 5 for the initial army. Then I'll probably be building some of the actual CSM models for additional weapon options like power fists. Actually probably have at least one mixed in for the last squad as is so I can convert the heavy bolter sister into a second reaper chaingun.

Then I got started on the princess. I tried press-molding some new bits for her with the milliput I just got in. First time using the stuff for this and it turned out fairly well. I like how I can scrape and sand it like resin and how it doesn't try to bend and flex, but little spikey bits also have a habit of snapping off during cleaning. Those will be squared away soon and I can get going on assembly proper, but in the meantime I've been building a base for her since she's just a tad short for a daemon prince on her own even with the big ole dragon wings.
NSFW
Spoiler:

She's not actually attached yet. I'm planning to paint the base separately and use the metal stand base Sophie comes with during painting for her. Well, unless I get another bright idea for a painting stand to hold her.

Frightnening Fiend of Slaanesh

Making progress on the princess conversion. I'm still adding things to the base and after fitting things together I think I can go ahead and put her on the base without blocking easy enough access for painting so I may go ahead and do that. A few bits left to fit on her, including the final wing attachment and some more greenstuff. I did get a test fit done with some sticky tack and the pins though for a rough idea.
NSFW
Spoiler:

I think she's going to turn out well, at least on the build. We'll see how the paint goes after a while.

Frightnening Fiend of Slaanesh

Finished building her now, just waiting on the greenstuff to finish curing. Been a while since I did the goo-tendrils off a base (last time was the Witch Coven for my Cryx army) but I think they came out ok and do a nice job of adding a little dynamic element in the big empty space between the wings and the base.
NSFW
Spoiler:

If the weather cooperates, I'll be getting her primed and into paint tomorrow.

Oh man, that Sophie DP looks sweet. Can't wait to see her painted up.

The warpsmith & herald are great pieces too - some really inspired stuff going on in here!

I agree the girls can easily get away with proxying for CSM. The shoulderpads really help sell the silhouette IMO.

Keep it up mate, thanks for sharing!

Glad you're enjoying it

I finished painting up the base and got it varnished , some gloss and some matte. Tomorrow I can put on some painter's tape and get started on the Princess proper.

Thankfully I found my other sophie (same sculpt but with the armor bikini) still built and primed from longer ago than I can honestly recall (she still has mold lines because I wasn't used to removing them at the time I was so new), so I've been using her to test colors and painting tricks. I think I've got the skin figured out, just fiddling with the wings now.

Progress!

And the NSFW angle:
Spoiler:

That's all basecoat and dry brushing. Lots and lots of dry brushing. But that's one of the biggest time sinks on the model done, so now on to the armor, hair, and details like horns and scales.

Finished up Sophie! I'm going to have get a lightbox setup and a camera with macro settings sometime, the pics get rather washed out.
NSFW of course
Spoiler:

And with the first 25 models now completed I have 3 HQ and 2 full troops squads so figured it was a good time for a group shot.
NSFW *edit* Found my better camera and got a new group photo!
Spoiler:

I think the next ones up will be the Raptors. I'm kitbashing seraphim with Khinerai from the AoS Daughters of Khaine range and a few CSM bits and maybe leftover generic demon wings from old Reaper mini line sitting in the pile of shame.

*edit found my camera and got a new lightbox ordered. Should be getting better pictures in the future now

Thanks, glad y'all are enjoying them

WIP on the new Raptors kitbash.

Dug into the pile of shame once again to steal some clear curved flight stands so I'd have enough for all 10 with just one seraphim kit. Because no way am I going to leave those models held up by just the skinny little tails. The Khinerai kit looks nice, but they go together very... oddly. I can only imagine how many snapped bits happen to poor souls using them as-is.

Frightnening Fiend of Slaanesh

Finished building the first 2 raptors and once the greenstuff cures they'll be going into paint tomorrow. They do make me glad I found a bag of little metal washers though so I could weight the underside of the bases. I imagine for transport I'm going to be forgoing foam for the most part and doing something with slots or magnets for the bases. I just can't see all those spindly thin bits staying un-snapped otherwise.

Next on the block after them are the pair of meltagun raptors.

I like how the first two came out so I'm probably going to just keep that part swap scheme going for the rest of the 2 5-strong squads.

And finally got paint done on these two.

Once I eventually get both squads of 5 done I figure I'll have one squad of Flappies and one of Fwooshers depending on backpack.

Anyway, up next is the first pair of meltagunner raptors.

Well first I got sucked into the new V Rising expansion for a while, then my internet went out for a few days, but progress has continued with the first meltagunner raptors. The hitch I kinda hit was that none of the kits I'm bashing are made for 2-handed weapons. So I ended up using the claw-shields with a little modification to be sort of like a light jump trooper version of the big seige shields you might see on, say, iron warriors. Minus the hazard stripes.

I like the distinction between the two squads. Nice bit of adaptation with the shields.

Just got in my first new paints! Picked up a set of Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0 and gave them a try on the warpsmith. Got him done in about 1/4-1/5th the normal paint time and I think he came out decent.

This should help a great deal in picking the pace back up again

I also got the meltagun raptors painted up, though with the older standard paints.

Taking a break from the girls to get a squad of the boys together. Just a couple minor conversions for options not included in the box, but they're ready for paint as soon as the weather cooperates for priming.

The army is mostly the girls, but there are a smattering of the actual Word Bearers warband that forms the core, and are also the models that get the more non-sisters oriented weaponry.

I'm also using these boys to get a little more experience with my new speedpaints before I start using them on the girls.

Aaand finished up the squad of CSM Legionaries. Got to try a few things out with the speedpaints and getting the hang of them I think. Loving them so far.

Probably be back to working on some raptors next and see about finishing the first squad of those girls up. Maybe see about working on some oblits too.

Frightnening Fiend of Slaanesh

Building the rest of the raptors right now. The squad champs are built, the second pair of meltagunners are almost done, and the last two basic raptors are still in the little project trays in the back waiting to be built.

I found it worked really well with the last squad of CSM to get them all built and primed then just paint one at a time with the speedpaints. Each mini paints quick enough now to not feel like a slog doing a whole squad a once, and doing bigger batches is nice for priming and working on the greenstuff so I don't get held up so often waiting for things to cure.

Made in us
Frightnening Fiend of Slaanesh

All my remaining raptors are built!

And primed for a bit speedpaint, pretty similar to slap chop style like the CSM legionaries I finished recently.

Looking forward to finishing these up so I can get a side-by-side old vs new painting on the same squad.
