One thing I like in "concept" for Palladium rules was the ability of a player to react to potential damage. I.e. they could dodge, absorb it with armor, parry, etc. The implementation was not great, but the idea is really solid.

Macross II RPG deserves an honorable mention as well, I still have a few lifelong friends that I met playing in high school Games Club my freshmen year. Same terrible system as Robotech and Rifts, same amazing mix of Kevin Long artwork and re-used animation sheets, plus some ship supplements done by the Dream Pod 9 crew.

Also, sadly, Dave Dietrich's Macross Mecha Designs and Third Invid War websites now only live on the wayback machine, but back in the late 90's when the internet was still a glorious mess of hand-coded HTML fan sites and web rings they were a treasure trove of additional Robotech, Macross plus and Macross 7 RPG stats and background. There were Rifts fansites too, but nothing came close to the level of Steelfalcon.com

I didn't get into tabletop wargaming until a few years later and then all my money and time would go into Warhammer, but so many of my middle school and high school afternoons were spent reading Rifts supplements or coloring in photocopies of artwork, rolling up new characters I'd never play and running through imaginary campaigns in my head. There was just something magical about those Palladium books back then, it fills the place in my heart that most gamers our age have for ADND

Really well done, Kid Kyoto. Fun to read!

And yes, more! To answer your Verhoeven with another Verhoeven, “I! Like it!”

I'll see what I can do. In the meantime I've updated my index of Retro Reviews.

I played the heck out of this game sitting on duty, in ports and at various posts around the world. The military gives you hours upon hours of boredom with short periods of excitement and if your not lucky, sheer terror. We would find an empty space on a ship, or a port side building office, or dry tent and play for hours.(Juicers Rock).
Have not played it in 25 years.

But this is truth: "I have a certain amount of appreciation for a game designer who has so little respect for the concept of "game balance" that he puts character classes like a Glitter Boy (who comes equipped with a massive suit of power armor) and a juvenile dragon (gifted with massive amounts of inherent magical power) alongside a Vagabond (gifted with the ability to "size up a fella") together in the same rulebook. Shine on you crazy diamond, Kevin Siembieda".

Yeah, I recall Juicers being more popular than Glitter Boys when we played.
