NIce work on all the new stuff damo! Wow i LOVE those bases on the custodes, they are perfect ...I will never paint one of those things though, too much like final fantasy for my aesthetic. Is it fantasy? is it scifi?? Too baroque for me ill take landmates anyday, but!, youve done exactly what they need. Grimy, coppery, marble-y....stellar work there sir,

I feel my name was mentioned a number of times in your last post, I mean closely but still summon-able.

So your looking for some knightly heads, tabbards etc, I may be able to assist here. Got any specifics your after?

Last night I wanted to get more of a feel for the Eldar I'm starting, So I went researching and very quickly became overcome with the fact I didn't really understand the fine points and that i'd been there many times before and felt the same thing, I didn't know how to differentiate the weapons and had no idea what the statements on each were telling me, I didn't have the foggiest idea what a 2+3++ is and even how to attempt the equation? my mind fogged over when discussing modifiers and many other essential aspects of the squads and how to use them to your advantage, I read the blurb about the Wraithseer and how they can be great at HQ hunting and very strong, and then I started to read how and I felt stupid, frankly stupid for not understanding what was written, I've got the rules and have done every edition since 4th and I still look at the numbers and feel sick I can't see how they work. I know how I want them to work and I know the models strengths and weaknesses but that doesn't help me, I may as well be putting them on the table and making pew pew noises while I smack them together.

or is there a simple way I can help learn the fundamentals and enjoy both my Minotaurs army and continue with the Eldar?

This is what I do:

Ignore points and min/maxing.
Use Power levels instead and tell anyone who has an issue with it to go feth themselves with a rusty barge pole.

these two points lead to:

Buy and paint whatever you think looks coolest. If it's not "optimal", remind yourself you're playing (when you get to play) for fun and not to WAAC.

When you play, start simple. Use whichever missions you like, but use the "beginner" stratagems from the BRB. There's plenty in that alone to have a fun game without any extra stuff.Have small games for your first couple of "relearning" the rules. I did this with 2 squads +1 hero of Minotaurs vs 2 squads + 1 hero of Iron Warriors - then we swapped sides for the next game. Slowly expand from there. Add a second hero for each side and a dread, then another squad and a vehicle. Don't even worry about adding Psykers and Flyers and Chapter tactics until you're happy enough with the rest of it all.

If you have super-cool models you really want to use but they have complex rules, use them as counts-as other similar stuff for the time being - so use a Spartan as a Land Raider. Use the Wraithseer as a bog-standard Eldar Wraithlord for the time being.

Thanks so much guys, it's great to see a bit more movement on the blog as you may have noticed i'm struggling a bit mentally lately since work has been so busy and I feel i'm losing a bit of myself and my identity because i'm not on here as much with my blog and reading comments and generally just hanging with you guys

But I have to say the strength of your words has helped me no end! and I'll be here if it's once a week or once a month i'm not going anywhere

now, first things first, I am sure i've a rusty barge pole around in the shed somewhere?..........

and second thing the webs? it's UHU clear glue just put between my fingertips and pulled apart and back a few times until it starts to dry then wind it on where you want, it dries fairly durable, not amazingly hard but if you put it somewhere where it's not getting knocked around too much then you should be right

Knightly! I did indeed in part mention you three times while looking in a mirror at midnight eating an apple and drawing occult symbols on my scrotum! and boom here you are! my idea is for tabards for my Howling Griffon models i'll be doing, i'm in the collecting parts stage and want to add some Knightly bits to sit with the fluff i've read so far, So long tabards would be ideal for Termies and some troops like sarge's etc. I think a few swords and laurel heads would also suit? but i'm open to ideas

Those DG really suit your style, you leverage dry-brushing quite a bit usually yes? It works super well, you got a lot of volume out of everything! And you picked a really good tone of rust to complement with -

Your work is so amazing!

And don't feel bad about having a hard time getting what everything in the game means. I've been in the hobby for 15 years and I can't even put together a competent force let alone have a game with anyone...that and I have no one to learn with and I feel too stupid going to meet strangers and hobby store to learn to play. Having said that I've never had a huge desire to play the game but if the opportunity should arise where someone would be willing to hold my hand and walk me through it all, I will accept. Otherwise I will forever continue the way I started; collecting and painting what I like.

Thanks again! I know i'm repeating myself but I mean it! I am so pleased your confidence in me hasn't waned with the sporadic nature recently here. Tom, thanks again from you any compliment is wonderful, your mastery of the palette is mind blowing (seriously!) and it may suprise you but I don't really use drybrushing on things hardly at all, I lay a base colour, wash then base colour and highlight up before bringing it all back down with washes and glazes then if needed I'll swing back in deftly and line highlight. :-) easy!

Someone else saw the Nurgle and now after his next project wants me to paint up a nurgle army like i've just done :-) so I guess i'm doing something right. I keep forgetting that my mantra from when I started was to find quick and easy ways to make a model look good that anybody can do! and I've always done that, i've never chased the Crystal brush, NMM pure artwork model style of painting, I want to evoke a feeling when you look at them, an instant story if you will that's eye catching and impressive but you still want to play with them :-)

lets see how I go with that mission statement on the Bloat Drones......

Interesting, mind, when I say drybrush I don't mean the basic way, just kinda all over. I mean in 2-3 layers, strategically applied, with a very soft brush and high pigment grind paint. In fact, I would actually recommend you try it, in these steps - prime, basecoat green and wash as you are already doing, then drybrush, but targetting the same areas you are currently glazing (using modulation etc), soft brush, then final brush work detailing. I think you would be able to get a very similar result with a lot less time.

I used to think drybrushing was a sin for anything but the most basic painting, but a few pros have relieved me of my bias. I think it would fit your nurgle style because the end result is luminous and velvety at the same time, so you are getting a good contrast traverse but the final look is not shiny or meant to be shiny, and the parts that are appear more wet than inherently glossy. Could work!

Thank you for the very undeserved compliments too

@Tom: Good point on the scheming aspect of the hobby. Official GW sales training would call it "collecting" and it is one of the three hobby pillars along with playing and painting modelling. But really, a great deal of this hobby is staring at little dudes or pictures of little dudes and daydreaming. My "planning" phase goes on a very long time with a lot of projects.

@Nerdfest: I hear what you are saying(see what you typed). I get it. I think a big part of your problem with negativity on the playing aspect of the hobby is that you are on the rules blogs aspect of forums. That stuff seems to get toxic super fast-either toxic or just so mathy not fun garbage. For example, I am head over heels about Necromunda being re-released. I get on the internets to share with other "like-minded" people on YakTribe about it. They want to complain and be negative and ridiculous. I talk with IceAngel or play a game with him or the guys at Adepticon and it's a whole different animal.

I don't know what the gaming store scene is where you are at. Here is Indianapolis it is absurd. I think there are 5 game stores in 10 miles of my place. So, you be jealous of that, while I continue to screw up your techniques on my own models. One store just moved next to my favorite fried chicken place. There has to be someone to play with on that weird little island.

Playing the game and talking about playing the game are two different animals. Luckily, the game really seems to have gotten simpler in this edition. You'll suck at first, and, if you are like me, that sucking just won't end but at least you'll get the muscle memory for it.

I look forward to seeing Howling Griffons from you. That'll make my quartered marines look great...(rollingeyeorkface)

Moonpie, dude you are right on the money about a few things you mentioned the speed at which a simple question can turn into a clash of nerds is staggering! I asked a simple (well, I thought it simple) question about the best weapons to have on Wraithguard if I am against Nurgle or marines? the answer turns out is Ghost Axes. The follow on was a massive argument about magnets and the level of stupidity of those who don't take the '5 seconds' to magnetize models for any eventuality

as for gaming i've only one GW store on my crazy little island and it's only been here a year or two, so my majority of inspiration and excitement comes from online forums and white dwarf, like you I get a real buzz when I start thinking about a new release like Necromunda or Killteams and of course want to talk and continue to grow my excitement with others who may have more knowledge and help guide me and keep me from making modeling mistakes but so often dissuades me and gives me reason to not follow through on an idea so i'll keep asking my questions here

So I wanted to think while I painted the Bloat Drones about my mission statement and I can honestly say these three guys I did without any tricky techniques or special products at all, just a fine brush, a wash brush and a rough brush for some stippling. it's all about the washes and the build up of two to three highlight on each part and some nice fine scratches before the final wash and a nuln oil in the
recesses.

I have to agree with Whaley on the rust, on the back view of the drone the drum/cable just looks more orange than rust, Although the fronts are on point!

But seriously rust is really very orange. I know because I see it on my car every day. Also my old boss at gw painted his rust very orange and he was an art school grad and a metallurgist.

Or I'm wrong and I see colors wrong. First time for everything:eyerollork:

Ah you guys, yep, the rust is bright and I would have actually toned it down if I had the models for a bit longer but Cam was coming to get them and I was still painting them so it was a rush tidy up and a photo shoot! I also would have liked to work on the backs of them more with red swollen flesh around the connections and a bit more shading and bruising added but sadly he needed them for a game that night

I also just obtained a suitcase, an old suitcase and in that suitcase is a heap of models and bits from about 20 years ago! so if there's any collectors out there who love a bit of metal hit me up and i'll see what's there! I have already spotted an old Yarrick and an original Ghaz and his little banner gretchin!

re: the rust - I think the color is perfect, it plays off the green flawlessly. However, I think you flooded a few zones, and there is a hard line between the rust and the metal. In those few areas, a quick drybrush with steel or tin bitz will blend it back in just on the edge. Very few areas to be concerned with though, really liking it.

If I could recommend to you (and everyone) Secret Weapon makes an absolutely sick set of rust and rubber acrylics (and many more besides). Those two sets are staples of pretty much everything I work on 40k wise at the moment, really great paints.
