Actually, Custodes do NOT predate Marines.

Before the Custodes the Dark Angels were the Guardians of the Emperor. That's the reason they have a large cache of ancient and "better" tech than many of the other marine chapters. They were allowed to take it with them when they joined up with Lion El'Johnson and got replaced by the Custodes.

As for the gold armor being atrocious.... Anymore so than a sea of Bright blue armor? How about silver armor? Grey and Yellow stripes?

If the custodes release has a quick return on the investment it will likely fund other army releases, which makes for a faster release schedule overall.

More recent fluff puts the Custodes as the Emperor's original modified super-soldiers, dating back to the start of the Great Crusade and thus predating the Thunder Warriors and the Astartes.

Where is that stated? I thought the current DA fluff still lists them as the Emperor's first bodyguard?

Pretty sure the Unification Wars, which was when the Custodes were created, was before the Great Crusade, the time of the Space Marines.

Some (most?) of the Space Marine Legions took part in the latter part of the Unification Wars. The Salamanders were instrumental in the final major battle, for example. For a time Thunder Warriors, Custodes and Space Marines all co-existed and formed part of the same fighting force. Then the Thunder Warriors were exterminated, the Custodes turned into bodyguards and the Space Marines were expanded and sent out to conquer the galaxy.

Huh, interesting. I thought it was Thunder Warriors --> Gradually Replaced by Custodes ---> Space Marines, who became the main fighting force whilst Custodes guarded Terra.

This is stated in the Forge World Horus Heresy book “Inferno”. It's pretty much the gospel about the Custodes until thebcodex comes out and well see how much of a turn south the fluff might go.
