I've reached a bump in my plans with my 40k csm army. I was wondering if the lesser daemons are worth the points. It seems like people on dakka can't agree on whether they suck or rock.

I use them for quick objective takers as my army advances ahead, why keep useful assault/shooting units back when cheap daemons can fill that role.

The problem with summoned lesser daemons is that they aren't more effective than CSM in assaults.

Pick a point size for the lesser daemon unit. Spend the same number of points on a rhino and a squad of Chaos Space Marines. If the lesser daemons charge that same point value worth of CSM, the expected result is a tie. That's assuming that the lesser daemons get the assault bonus attacks, and aren't assaulting into cover. And then, in round two of that combat, the lesser daemons start losing.

I use mine as sheilds to wonderous effect. Someone's about to charge a unit I don't want them to charge? Plop down a unit of Daemons in between them, then either

1) Get the hell outta dodge.
2) Get a counter charge
or depending on how many you got

3) Ignore that unit and go back to shooting.

Has worked wonders for me in the past, especailly against Orks or Nids.

They are nice for absorbing power weapon/fist charges with their invulnerable save.

When that death company with reclusiarch and power fist/power sword is about to charge your berzerkers, its nice to have a screen of daemons to take that charge instead.

Against anything with furious charge of their own, daemons are probably the best way of blunting their charge, and setting them up for counter so you can furious charge them with your zerkers next turn- he who furious charges generally wins in these engagements.

Better to have your cheap daemons wiped out then your own hammer unit getting hammered.

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

They aren't good, certainly not for the cost. A regular CSM costs only 2 more points and is much more useful.

Deamon bomb, always. They take objectives when you rush the enemy.

I also use them to tie up scary units in combat, or take out weak units.

No grenades mean they strike last when assaulting into cover. No power weapons or fists mean that they are of limited use against MEQs and vehicles. A 5+ save means that anything with a decent number of attacks will walk right through them.

The only thing they are good for is tying up dreads, that have too few attacks to cause significant wounds.

If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live?

Well i always use them. you gotta realize they might be crap but a cheaper troop that can run on an objective or last min contest an objective? if you know how to work with them they are effective and if you don't.... well then don't buy the models! Besides make some and start up a supplementary C:Chaos deamons army!
