It's on Netflix "Watch It Now" (downloadable to watch instantly)! I watched it, and enjoyed it a lot! Even though it doesn't seem to be very historically accurate at all, with the romance at least... (although that's from what wikipedia tells me which, admittedly, could also be far from historically accurate )

Never saw Flyboys but just watched this movie. I have to say it is pretty good.
Only thing I thought that was odd is that the radial engines on some of the planes were spinning along with the propellers. I thought the engines were suppose to be stationary. The torque of spinning engines probably would create some sort of physical effect on planes.

No, that is exactly how they worked. The effect on the plane was to make manovers to the left much easier and to the right much harder. They also used castor oil as well!

Actually Flyboys is much more accurate than Red Baron, though it does take some liberties.

Is this in the cinemas or have I missed it completely?
Flyboys toyboys was okay but best watched knowing it is a movie ans therefore taking a few liberties.
And yes the spinning engines could be a problem!
The Sopwith Camel was very difficult for inexperienced pilots to handle because of the forces genrated by the relatively powerful spinning engine.
BTW hoping Richtoven wasn't flying around all the time in a red Fokker Dr1 triplane! Automatically Appended Next Post: Yes I missed It

Big let down!
The movie could have been a real masterpiece, but the writers lost focus and let it become a Fantasy movie.
They were spot on with regard to Uniform Accuracy, Aircraft accuracy and authenticity. However, they were all over the board with the History time-line.
Here are a few things which really sent the film spinning:
1. Lanoe Hawker was shot down in a DH-2, not an SE5 Scout. (The SE5 was not available until 1917; Lanoe was shot down in 1916...)
2. Richthofen flew a Albatros D-II early for the most part, he got the DR-1 late. You see him flying Albatros D- III's...
3. The Roy Brown thing was a WTF moment...seriously, Roy Brown?
The romance thing could have been completely removed. It would have helped the movie.
As for a comparison to Flyboys; both were entertaining. Flyboys had all the baddies flying DR-1's, which was a shame. A bunch of CGI doesn't make for a good movie.
Anyway, Red Baron was worth the watch. But don't expect a Historically correct film. Enjoy the Dogfight/Balloon Busting scenes. That's all it has going for it!
Cheers.

The film you want would never be made, it wouldn't sell. To make a movie pay you will always need to exercise some artistic licence and that is what you get with any warmovie.
I find it odd that an American is complaining about historical facts, you lot have messed about with just about every bit of history going, dont get me started on U571!

Easy there Fella. What's so odd about a Yank complaining when a movie is wrong? Are you suggesting that WE Yanks don't have any culture? Pffft.. who are you crappin'? The movie was wrong and it never scored big in the Box Office. Big FACT.
There was no need to take artistic license with telling the story of Der Rittmeister. The legend alone would have brought fans to the theaters. I followed the making of this film with keen interest. At some point during production, word had gotten out about the story being weak. This spread through the WW I aviation fan community pretty quickly condemning it even before it hit the theaters. Don't assume this had an impact on Box Office receipts, just know that there were many waiting for the Red Baron story for some time and this was not good news.
It could have been so much more. Another important person missing was Oswald Boelcke. Although mentioned, he was a tremendous influence on Richthofen and deserved a bigger part in the movie (Or a part). In this case, truth was stranger than fiction and would have sufficed...
The movie that should have been made for us Yanks; Lothar von Richtofen! Now here's a guy that all us would have idolized. A guy bent on shooting down planes whenever possible. Even Manfred called his brother a Butcher. It would have probably made for a better story if they focused on his brother with Manfred as the backdrop.
But I digress...
As for U571..utter Crap. A complete fantasy piece twisting historic facts. The Enigma Machine code had already been cracked and the Brits got it first. The rest of it was pure fantasy. (Although entertaining...)
Anyway...point your ire elsewhere. This film was made by Monteray Media, an Independent Studio. Aside from Pinewood Studios and Christopher Lee horror films, Hollywood will always command the world stage for making fiction into fact. And that's coming from a Yank...MATE!

Actually they didnt.
The first machine was captured by the Poles, though it was incomplete, but the Polish cypher Bureau had been working for the six years prior to war on cracking the codes, without the work and personnel they passed on to Bletchley park, the codes would never have been broken. British and French code breakers met with their Polish counter-parts in Warsaw on the 24th July 1939 to be given the key to mapping the rotors. The Polish also recieved codebooks and documents relating to the Enigma machines from the French Military Intelligence who had acquired them in Germany.
Luckily all the Polish codebreakers arrived at Bletchley park after the fall of France to continue their work with thier British colleagues.
The first complete success came with the capture of U-110 when its scuttle charges failed to go off and the machine and daykey books were captured. Incidently the ships captain, Julius Lemp, was shot as he tried to return to set off the charges.

Thanks for the clarification. I may have not given my Countrymen the respect that is due. By saying Brits, I meant Commonwealth Forces.

Well put. No harm or ill will is intended; just a jab. I love all my friends over the pond. Back to the topic at hand. Red Baron= Two and one half stars on a Five scale.
Let us all sleep easy this night. My quarrel is over...
Cheers.

I didnt like the film either... 'Blue Max' is still the best WW1 air combat movie.
Though I tend to avoid military films these days... Even Saving Private Ryan annoyed me.
