I always had trouble with painting gold on my figs, be it all of the armour for my Dante, or just little bits of SW bling. I could never get the highlights right, until I discovered a method on GW's own site that immediatly hit me as being seriously easy, like, newb level. Only 3 steps (two if you want a really pale gold);

1) Base the area in Mithril Silver/Chainmail/Boltgun Metal, depending on how dark or light you want your gold. I use Mithril Silver, but, as with everything YMMV.
2) Give the entire area a wash of Gryphonne Sepia.
3) Repeat step 2 after it dries, as many times as you like (usually 3-4, to get a nice, deep gold)

See? Told you it was easy
If I had a decent camera I would post some pictures (However I don't think my phone is up to scratch...)
Try it yourself to see the results, heck try it on a piece of sprue if you don't trust me
Obviously as it uses a wash, it works a lot better on surfaces with lots of detail, it really brings them out.

Please post if you've tried it, and any comments on results would be awesome

I dunno...

Some pictures would be nice, they would clear things up a treat, but if you can't provide them, c'est la vie.

thats a good idea. At the moment I base the area with snakebite leather, then add a coat of a 50:50 mix of shining gold & flesh wash & then when thats dry a wash of pure flesh wash.

Ill have to try this method out.

I posted a tip on this a while back and it really does work rather well. Here is a link to that article.

Glad Valkyrie posted some pictures, Looks great!

I may have to give some veterans or my biker captain the same treatment!

Can't say i'll jump on the blood-craving bandwagon anytime soon though.

Oh my. My technique (which sucks) is to paint them with some Kommando Khaki, then shining gold, then drybrush with burnished gold. Not only is it labor intensive, the results are mediocre - the kommando khaki invariably muddies the contrast between the dark and the light parts. This looks like a much better technique I'm looking forward to trying today.

I've been using undiluted GW brown ink for gold, which gives pretty much the same effect as multiple coats of gryphone sephia. Its a shame it is discontinued now...

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

@Valkyrie; Your models seemed to have turned out a lot darker than mine, how many coats of wash did you give them? And what was your base metal colour? Or is it just the flash/camera/something like that that's making them look darker?

Probably work

I just gave it a shot last night. These guys are still very rough, but I think I'm overall quite satisfied with how the gold turned out compared with using shining gold. Let me know what you think, and if anyone's tried using sepia over actual shining gold, I'd love to see a sample of that.

I
I use sepia over shining (or maybe burnished) gold all the time. I'll get a pic up soon, but now I need to finish my Land Raider...

Nice technique but the results are most definately brass not gold.

I wonder what will happen if you mix yellow glaze with the sepia wash.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

I tried this and wasn't thrilled with the results - Mithril Silver painted with Gryphonne Sepia. It didn't look bad at all, but neither did it look like gold. More like a shiny yellowish metal. It didn't have enough depth. I'm going to try layering it some more.

I have always gone with well for any metal really. Paint the metal parts you want with whatever metal color you want. Do a wash with black ink a time or to. This dulls it as well as the place gets into the cracks and froms around rivets and studs. Then go back over it with the same metal color and lightly highlight it.

Can't you see we have been abandoned? Forget matters of duty and honor to the emperor this is now a matter of pride.
