I was at the local GW today and someone mentioned that you can't make a Look Out Sir against strange magic attacks(Like Flamestorm, Purple Sun, Pit of Shades, etc.) The Look Out Sir rules only talk about strange shooting attacks(like templates and cannonballs). I'm looking through the BRB and he seems correct so far. Still looking as I think that is very weird, but I wanted to post to get you all's opinion.

The lore of metal spell about gehenna's hounds specifies that a look out sir may be made against each individual hit out of d6. more generally, I don't know

I am guessing that you can only use Look Out Sir against magic when it actually says you can in the specific spell...

i would of thought it was anything Shooty, So magic missiles, Cannons, bolt throwers, Flame templates.

Plop template and Destroy things i don't think you can look out sir that. Or things where it says Every model in unit takes Blah or Gurh.
My friend was trying to lookout sir a dragon too shortly corrected that

But i still haven't seen the rule book yet :(

It says templates specifically. Why would it not work for magic that has a template?

Because it says shooting specifically. Magic is not shooting and I can't find anything to indicate a Look Out Sir for magic(except where specified with the Hounds spell).

no, really it says 'templates' not shooting.

Just gone over that part and it would appear that
it allows you a 'look out sir' roll but the effect is still a template.

Intresting times ahead for heros !

(IE templates NOT shooting) as epic indicates, and no mention of shooting.

The last two paragraphs in the "Champions and Shooting" on page 93:
The only exceptions to this are shooting attacks that do not use the normal shooting, specifically shooting attacks that use some form of template(such as cannons, stone throwers, breath weapons and so on).

Fortunately, in these cases, a champion is so beloved by his unit that ordinary rank and file troops will attempt to save him - as respected by the "Look Out Sr! rule(see below)"

"Look Out Sir!" Rule on page 93:
If the champion is hit by a template as described above, *Insert rest of rule*

The template hit mentioned in the Look Out Sir! rule is described above as a Shooting Attack, not Magic in any way.

On to characters.

On page 97 the BRB once again specifically mentions shooting attacks with no mention of magic for the +4 "Look Out Sir!" for Lone Characters.

Magic is briefly mentioned on page 97 that spells effecting a unit will affect the character if he joins it and vise versa(if capable is affecting a unit). Nothing helpful here.

On page 99 under the Unusual Shooting Rule:
The only exceptions to this are shooting attacks that do not use the normal shooting, specifically shooting attacks that use some form of template(such as cannons, stone throwers, breath weapons and so on).

Look at that, word for word what's on page 93.

If a character is hit by such an attack, *insert rest of "Look Out Sir" Rules*

Shooting is mentioned quite specifically and Magic never is.

I had a game with my high elves vs. lizardmen and got Pit of Shades off against his unit of Temple Guard with Slaan. We had an argument over whether the Slaan got a Look Out Sir! roll or not and I eventually conceded that he could have one. He then proceeded to fail it and roll a 4 for his init. test. Dead Slaan

The book is very ambiguous on the point as it does say template, but it also says that Look Out Sir! only refers to shooting attacks... GW will have to make a ruling in an errata to clarify really.

IIRC don't the shooting allocation rules say they apply to magic and anything that's basically a non combat attack?

yep as far as i can tell, no where does it say magic allows a LoSir unless the spell says it does, or if it distributes as "shooting"

The shooting rules seem imply the distribution rules are the default to be used in magic unless stated otherwise though.

wouldnt the slann be too big for a look out sir roll? unless he has a rule that says he gets one anyways...

Yes, the different base size rule, right? Perhaps it's in the lizardmen errata that he gets one, though... otherwise every cannon would be aimed that way!

He is model type infantry, so he gets a look out sir if he is in a unit of 5 or more rank and file infantry (2+) or within 3 inches of one (4+).

yeah its not base size, based on model class.

Slann is infantry, temple guard is infantry. So he gets a LoS roll

Yep... from the FAQ that is now up:

"Q: Does the ‘Look Out Sir’ special rule apply against all spells that
use templates? (p93)
A: Yes."
