This seems like a really weird upgrade sprue. I was expecting a lot more pouches, scopes, grenades, pistols, packs, and so on, although that was when I thought it was going to be an 'accessory sprue'. Even if you had told me it would be an 'upgrade sprue' with new weapons on, I wouldn't have guessed just a load of basic SMGs and laser rifles. To me, an upgrade sprue suggests more 'special weapons' like LMGs, grenade launchers, marksman's rifles, flamethrowers, fancy pistols, close-combat weapons, etc.
Really like the grim-dark gasmask and spiky helmet combo, but seems like an odd choice for a generic upgrade sprue, since those filter boxes look likely to cause issues being fitted onto existing kits (I assume those are what the bits under the heads on the left are). Might need some filing to squeeze between torsos and arms.

This looks like a sprue that was supposed to go in the Cannon Fodder box.

On Facebook they said the intention was also to have a sprue for Sci fi-ing up their historical kits. The arms make a lot of sense for gluing onto WW2 Italians or French Resistance. The heads I assume are to cash in on Death Korps fever.

The kit looks really useful to me, but I’m not planning to upgrade too many Death Fields minis so much as to upgrade non Death Fields minis into Death Fields style.

In the case of grenade launchers, Les Grognards has them on their basic sprue; don't know about the Raumjager or Einha ... not-Squats. And for snipers rifles, Les Grognards Heavy Weapons and Command set has those.

Some melee weapons would have been nice, say Great War themed trench raiding gear. Still I'll get at least one of these sprues.

Now if only the Cannon Fodder can get through the cargo logjam. I have all these bits waiting on them. Victoria minis melee weapons for close combat Penal Legion, Mad Robot oxygen tanks for astronauts, Mad Robot WW1 British gas mask heads and Cadian web belts for a Great War themed PDF (just five at most. Building more for Stargrave and Operation Last Train, so variety is more important.)

Yeah, not overly impressed with that sprue... backpacks, pouches and heavy weapons would have been more useful.
While I like the idea of sci-fy-ing other kits, there is one main issue: if the bodies aren't 100% the right size and the glueing parts at the correct angle, the parts don't fit. I don't think the WA sets are all standardised.
If it was a close combat upgrade sprue with separate arms, this wouldn't be an issue.

So what sets are you guys looking forward to? What are you thinking of using them for?

Of the ones listed in the tracker.

Boxers - Possibly, these look like they could be useful in RPGs, especially if mixed with the Warring States Infantry... could produce some nice fantasy characters
Conquistadors/16th Century Infantry - Yes. will be getting like 8 boxes to start. I have like 3 "Empire armies..." this will be the start of a 4th. Will also use in Pathfinder. I always wanted to do a Maztica like setting game.
Aztecs - yes. I want a small warband but may expand it. And again perhaps run a Pathfinder based Maztica game.
Goths - Maybe. The Irish were good. These can probably work for Frostgrave or other fantasy.
Goth Army Builder - Same deal as with the other Goth box
Franks - Same deal as with the Goths
Conquistador Cavalry - Yes. Will be getting 4 boxes to start. They will go with the Conq infantry.
Warring States Infantry - Possibly... to mix with the boxers for fantasy Chinese
Landsknecht Ogres - Yes. Will be getting 4 boxes to start. They will be part of my Conq. army. I also have two Imperial giants I bought from TIPS for this army.
Classic Fantasy Trolls - Maybe. Will see how they compare to the Ogres. Perhaps I can mixed the 2 together.

I am excited for all of this, but the wait seems soooooo long....

The sprue is an interesting experiment. For me personally it is an utter dud. It is a sprue of heads and basic guns, 6 each. Zero incentive to buy just one or two, as there would be with a sprue of special weapons, pouches, character heads, etc. Either you outfit your whole force or nothing. And with just 6 copies of each item, it means you're doubling your financial investment in an army just for the sake of a different basic gun.

The Weapons upgrade sprue could be interesting to "guard-ify" a historical army.

Take any Warlord Historicals kit, give the grunts the Lasgun arms and the officers the Shotgun aka Boltgun arms, done.

The Gasmask Pickehaube heads seem weirdly specific for what is supposed to be deliberately generic kit.

It's kinda how I made my Dark Mechanicum Skitarii. Just the other way around, I used prussian Infantry with leftover rad carbines & galvanic rifles.

Prob gonna grab a couple of sprues to mix into my traitor guard.

Thing is, you can already do that with any Death Fields kit for the same money... and have the Death Fields bodies left over.

Egyptians might be one of those things I get just to have, despite not being a historical player.

Dino riders I'm obviously getting to game with, like any normal person.

This means I can buy a box of French Infantry with some sprue upgrades to make 35 Retro/gasmask//SciFi infantry models for under $60 with free shipping?

IDK if that is going to be a better deal than GW's Krieg boxes...

Not really, the recentest, 'news' about WGA's Ironcore range is the appearance of Valkir in their future release schedule, between the Goths and the Late Roman Army Builder.

Thank you for the info anyway

My buy in for the accessory (now titled Weapons Upgrade sprue) may not be as big as I had been considering but, with three boxes of Cannon Fodder having arrived at home, four or five may add some variety to the 90 figures waiting for me!

Finally... Egyptians and Assyrians are two of the most popular and coolest ancient armies, that are still non- or underrepresented in plastic and metal.
First one down, one more to go.

I suspected the Raptors would be cavalry options for the lizard men, but now it seems they get some other handlers... Raumjäger? Space brits? Maybe Grognards, but they would obviously ride frogs into battle

WW1 British for a small Blood and Valor force.

WW1/2 French to finally get an Early War force on the table that's not British or German whilst not breaking the bank.

Depending on how the Ogres turn out, might eye them up for Kings of War.

Excellent! Historical Egyptians will also be useful as fantasy Stygians! I'm really looking forward to that one.

I've recently been working on a switch from high fantasy to low fantasy/sword & sorcery with a Hyborian flavor. I was shocked at the lack of any plastic Egyptian infantry, especially Late-Empire. That seems like a no-brainer for ancients plastics, right?

...come to think of it... wasn't there some chariot part visible in one of the sneak peeks the last months? That would be egyptian chariots then? Sweet.

If I recall the chariot was more of a Mycenean style chariot, according to the history gamers commenting on it. Sounds close enough to Hittite style for me to use in a fantasy Bronze Age army.

Mostly, I'd be painting for painting's sake but there are a few gaming applications I could do.

I want Boxers to do a Wuxia-themed characters for Oubliette (my homemade dungeon crawl). I could even paint some up as cultist enemies for a Pagoda Of The Damned type campaign combined with all the Shadowlands undead models I have from my old AEG Clan War army.

I want Warring States infantry purely to paint up since they're so hard to find. Again, they could make good heroes (or enemies, for a ninja-themed party?) for Oubliette.

I want those Aztecs just to paint up. I also have an old Maztica NPC that I did a sweet job of kitbashing, but her current maccas look awful. I could probably make an entire party of Aztec-themed heroes for my dungeon crawl.

I could definitely use Space Brits as a Planetary Coalition group in an upcoming chapter of my 28mm comic.

The Egyptians will go to my "possibly" list too. I have 2 of the Reaper bones Charon barges... Perhaps I can give them a mixed crew of Egyptians and Skeletons... Would finally give me something to do with the barges,,., would look good as a display and could make a good RPG encounter... Hmmm.

I wonder if Wargames Atlantic decided not to do any female minis. I remember a preview of female partisans and some female scifi? soldiers... I think some helmeted heads had been shown... but nothing since. It does seem that quite a few of the people who comment on the facebook page were not interested in female miniatures... so maybe they were deemed to not be profitable?

My personal wish list includes more halflings,.. I really like their halflings and would love some cavalry and maybe some warmachines or monstrous cavalry to go with them. I converted 1 box (30) in to handgunners using Warlord landsknecht missile troop arms. and have 1 box of (30) halfling Halberds/ bardiches... right now they are just kind of attached to one of my human armies as mercs since they arent really a stand alone army... but I would love to get some riders in there... I can also make my halfling hero on Griffin that I want. But will likely add them to my conquistador/Ogre army... since we all know conquistadors utilized Halfling hand gunners alongside the Ogre shock troops. At least they did in Old San Juan...

Edit... oh, and if we do get Dino cavalry... i think they will go with my planned Aztec Warband...

The grognard command / heavy weapons set includes female grognards.

The kits don't have any particularly noticeable female bodies, which in the case of Death Field kits is normal because of armour and such, but the raumjagers have 2 female heads per sprue (with and without field cap) and as mentioned the grognard hwt/command has 4 different female heads (1 per headdress type).

It is not much, but it is more than most similar plastic kits have. Should be enough to make some mixed gender squads, although they would get extremely repetitive for female squads.
