Well, there's your preview for today.

They're nice models.

What? How do they in any way seem like the Tau?

I hope its revealed that the "Worf" headed squats exclusively meet and trade with the tau, so that the Imperium assumes it's a xenos race and that's why things are okay with them and the squats.

I prefer the armoured dudes but not going to lie these are as 40k as it can be
A bit of a parody kind of model that should be a nice break from painting the armoured ones.

This army is shaping to be loads of fun.

I'm not sure I understand why the angry half-clothed miners are using their mining tools instead of proper weapons.

For genestealer cults it makes sense, because they are actually an uprising of miners with re-purposed equipment (even if a lot of that equipment does seem rather too good).
But these guys are just stripping down to do some mining (...with hammers..?) and then they get roid rage just as an enemy turns up?

As someone who likes the rest of the range that we've seen, these really are a bit of a turn off for me.

I know the whole shirtless berserker thing is a throwback, but I don't like OG slayers either.

I imagine a lot of folks will like these because of that, though.

Sometimes, it's mining equipement. Sometimes they're just swinging around an extremly high-tech Plasma axe.

I think painting the skin in the same tone as the rest of the clothing would maybe help sell the augmented angle a bit better?

The fluff is a bit confusing. I thought they were cyberslayers at first but they're just mining thugs who strip down for some reason, which seems at odds with the Votann being one of the more practical races concerned about protecting their troops.

Wonder if those weapons will have individual rules or they'll all be Cthonian Reavyr-Toolz with the same stats.

Thats a cool idea actually. Painting metal like colossus skin.

Also, according to what we already know of the lore, these people were born specifically to be shirtless psychopaths.

That important belief of the Leagues that "nothing is worth doing unless it is done well" clearly meant charging into battle half-naked yet still wearing the lower half of a (now not so void-sealed) void-sealed suit with nothing but a few mining tools because they're purposefully ignoring ranged weapons.

At the very least they could have tied it to either the honour or meritocracy sides of the Leagues rather than just "They're brave".

If I collect this army (and I'm thinking I will), hopefully I can convert the standard infantry unit (hearthkyn) into these guys with just weapon swaps and some extra tubes and stuff.

I really just can't stand the shirtless thing for some reason after seeing other stuff in the range.

These are great models. The more of the army I see, the more I like it. Hopefully they will preview a big nice tank or Jet in the near future to round out the faction. Heck, I'd love to see some kind of Metaphysical Ancestor spirit akin to an Avatar of Khaine or Greater Deamon too.

Sadly, 9th edition is a dumpster fire which I refuse to support. Given how new armies have been treated in recent years, I'm probably going to wait until the second codex release alongside a second wave of models before digging in to this faction. Hopefully 10th edition will be a better game.

Every army has some level of expendable troops. They're berserkers, probably not meant to last long. I'd also guess that the Votann have better medicine than the imperium at large and probably can save their people from death or grievous injury much more easily.

I'm not a fan of these not-slayers personally. Yeah, the choice of weapons isn't ideal (despite my joke above) but the pants seem the most odd to me. Courduroy patches on sweat pants seems like an odd choice for "armor" even if you're a space dwarf berzerker.

If you think of it as more of a rubber-type material, it makes sense on the knees, at least - something to protect them if needing to kneel.

Oh, it's totally reliant on the meritocracy aspect. They're brave for subjecting themselves to incredulous amounts of liquid courage (also explaining why they're radiation proof). In any lesser society somebody would feel obligated to protect them from themselves, but the Squats recognize the will and dedication to drinking and won't try to dissuade them from acting... eccentric.

Awful models, appallingly posed. These are not only a conceptual disaster, they're the worst kind of box-ticking lazy worldbuilding Games Workshop is world-class at.

I mean nowhere in that article does it say that they are elite.

Also, they aren't very well armoured. The legs aren't armoured and it's just an Ogre gutplate for a couple of them.

They're also "Beserks" in the article, except in the URL. Perhaps the writer of this article felt compelled to ingest liquid courage, too, so as not to faint at the sight of their awesomeness.

Don't be fooled. They're miner versions of wrestler belts, and as any Space Woof or Chaos worshipper can attest to, wrestler belts make you 120% better at punching things, drinking alcohol and spinning sagas. They're all the armor you'll ever need.

I was thinking the exact same thing, lol. It’s more the design of the handles than the actual posing though. Idk how you’re supposed to slide your hand.
