Kandinsky, Auerbach, Rothko and Pollock ain't got nothing on this.
Decades of models, decisions from dozens of painters, discontinued paint colours and hundreds of hours combine to make something rather special.
I'm pretty sure that I can make out a bad moon yellow Eldar Firedragon helmet with firedragon crimson shoulders!
I've been doing a bit of stripping of some old trade models just recently and this is the result of my work!
I wonder if sludge art from 2025 will be quite as colourful as this or if we will enter a browner more grimdark period?

What did you use to strip them? As mentioned above I have to scrub the paint off with and old tooth brush. The stuff rarely falls off itself, especially with models with older paint jobs.

What do you use? I use Dettol.
1) Leave the models fully submerged in a sealed tupperware for a minimum of 24hrs
I find 36-48 is better but ymmv. Temperature, number of uses the Dettol has had, varnish, paint thickness, paint types etc will all be factors?
2) Get your gloves on and give them a light scrub with a toothbrush. Rinse your toothbrush regularly in Dettol in order to remove any sticky paint which will smear all over the model.
3) Place any models that are not completely clean into a second tupperware with fresh Dettol. and repeat steps 1+2 until necessary. I've never had to do this more than twice.
4) Rinse fully stripped models with water and soap. Leave to dry on an old towel, kitchen towel or j-cloth.
DO NOT try to rinse/wash models with any remaining paint residue at this stage. IT WILL NOT WORK! The paint will become very sticky and smear on the model.
5) The Dettol can be reused. Pour it into a storage container through a fine screen, sponge or scourer and inspect your fabulous Sludge Art!
(Also get painting your freshly stripped miniature! )

I find that before using a toothbrush you can often use a toothpick to get a lot of the paint off as a single layer. I've even managed to remove the entire paint from a model in one intact layer once or twice. This way tends to leave far less in the cracks.
Also, if anything does get stuck in the cracks, you can get it out using blu- tac.

You should make a piece of terrain such as an industrial pipe, with that stuff dripping out of it.
As a bonus, you won't even have to paint your toxic sludge!

As if on cue, you hear two people singing from the stairwell, and the door is opened and a pair of very smelly, very dirty guardsmen stumble in, completely drunk, and covered in vomit, and immediately collapse unconsious on the porch. You drag them to their beds, realising that they will not be waking up for some time. |
