Wow. Phenomenal work as ever dude.

That's some sound advice about the chains! Since I didn't find the kind of chain I liked that way, however, it was really great to come across the modeling chain offered by Galeforce Nine in a well-stocked hobby store -- that's the one I have been using so far, and it scales rather nicely and is easy enough to work with.

So, time for an update over here as well:

One of my hobby endeavours that didn't get quite as much off the ground this year as I would have liked was the plan to work on some Death Guard models. Having recently finished Christ Wraight's "Lords of Silence" (which I can recommend, by the way), I had a bit of an appetite to mess around with some Nurglite models again, though:

First up, I cleaned up the conversion job on that Death Guard Helbrute I converted a while ago and undercoated him, which pulls the entire conversion together, but also has the somewhat distracting side-effect of making the entire model look as though it were made from milk chocolate:

I also finally picked up one of those cute little Blight-Haulers, and it's really a rather delightful model, if you ask me. Just put it together without any changes (if I ever add more of those to my collection, I will likely make some tweaks to the following models to make for a little variety):

And last but not least, I still has a leftover Plaguecaster in my bitzbox that sat there incomplete and unloved: I am not a particular fan of the stock model and have already converted one of them, plus the poor guy had been pilfered for bitz during an earlier project. But I still wanted to do something with the leftovers, so I decided to convert my own version of the Foul Blightspawn. I am not a huge fan of that weird pump that's part of the stock model's body, so I went for a slightly more straightforward approach (with more of a classic launcher weapon), but I did try to include enough visual cues to resemble the stock model's equipment. Anyway, here goes:

As always, let me know what you think!

Haha, cheers guys -- yeah, that is one tasty looking Dread, in spite of all the mutations, eh?

@ monkeytroll: The breastplate on the Blightspawn is indeed a press-mould: I lacked a breastplate piece for the guy because I used the original piece for converting the Helbrute So i made a quick copy of one of my converted Blight King's breastplates and nicked and tucked it a bit.

In the meantime, I have been working on a few more Nurgley test models for one of my next projects that kinda works like a bridge between my 40k and INQ28 collections: A team based on my ideas for the "Keepers of the Eternal Garden", a Nurglite cult seeking to bring about manifestations of Nurgle's Garden in realspace. You could see them as eco-terrorists turned up to eleven, in a way, because they tend to hi-jack Imperial science projects with their daemonic infestations, so some of the cult's members/victims are still wearing the remains of hazmat suits, medicae uniforms and lab-coats. Here's the first test model I painted:

And here he is again with his next two friends:

These three models are at different steps of the painting process: The guy on the left is all but finished, the one in the middle still needs some detail work, while the Plague Bearer has only been washed. At the same time, they also form different steps in the (d)evolution from a human cult member/cult victim to an undying servant of Nurgle (and also, a living incarnation of the Blightwood).

Anyway, as always, let me know what you think!

Liking those guys, that's a lovely rotten skin tone you have going there, and the blend to tentacles is very nice.

Great idea on the cult infiltrating Imperial labs to incorporate the lab coats and haz-mat suits, looking forward to where you take these blessed gardeners....

Cheers, monkeytroll! Yeah, they do look rather delightfully disgusting, don't they?

Speaking of which, Poxwalker number two is now basically finished:

As is the Plaguebearer:

And since the cult's activities have managed to attract some attention - or maybe they were being fostered from within the Great Eye in the first place - there's also this guy:

A Plague Marine originally converted ages ago when the Putrid Blightkings were first released during the latter days of classic WFB. I've been meaning to get these guys painted for all this time, and now seemed like a good occasion The first picture shows the model just after washes, and this is what he looked like when I put down the brush earlier:

Still needs some detail work here and there, but you probably get the idea.

Cheers, mate! And don't worry, there'll always be more mangled Ultramarines in this thread, eventually

In the meantime, however, you'll have to content yourselves with some more Nurglite goodness:

I have some finishing touches on the Plague Marine to share with you, and finally some pictures taken in proper daylight:

First up, here are the Poxwalkers and Plaguebearer again:

Here's the Plague Marine, just about finished now, except for his base:

And here are the models together, in what may become the germ cell, as it were, of an eventual warband, kill team or Death Guard army:

Delicious Nurgle bois, love the weight of the marine and the orange + flesh of the gribblies. I've realized over the years that one of the appeals of Nurgle crews done right is the overall tone of the force, and this lot is no exception

And I'm very much in the excited-for-that-helbrute camp! Always appreciate conversions of the DV dread, especially ones with as many tweaks as yours has.

I really like those walkers and that plague bearer, really nice color scheme that's not so gross that it makes you gak. I'm not as sold on the marine model, he looks a bit top heavy. Or maybe it's that shirt-and-no-pants outfit which strips him of some authority.. I do like the backpack though!

Cheers for the feedback, guys!

@ Boss Salvage: Yes, finding the right tone is really a huge tone for Nurgle projects, is it? I've actually spent years trying to get it right, and this particular bunch of models represents my best attempt so far

@ mcmattila: Hmm, I actually have to admit that the topheaviness is actually one of my favourite parts about this particular Plague Marine conversion -- rest assured, however, that the rest of the squad is wearing more comprehensive armour -- at least for the most part

Anyway, happy new year, everyone!

Phew, so another year is behind us. I am actually pretty happy with my hobby year -- in fact, I have created a couple of writeups over at my blog serving as recaps for 2018, in case anyone's interested. There's this one that points you towards lots of awesome hobby projects from different hobbyists. And I have also recently finished a recap of my own hobby year. As a sneak peak, here's a look at everything I've managed to paint during 2018:

At the same time, I haven't been all that productive over the holiday, to be honest. But I still have some smaller things to share with you. First of all, there are a few more conversions for my Nurglite cult, the Keepers of the Eternal Garden: My current plan is to have a couple of additional Poxwalkers, then some slightly more human cult-members, and possibly the cult leader, an individual known as "the Horticulturalist". Beyond that, I imagine there will be some more Plague Marines and Death Guard models -- let's see. For now, here's the next batch of Poxwalkers. Another ten have already been assembled/converted, while I have about another half-dozen still on sprue:

Nearly all of these have been tweaked in some way: In some cases, this just meant twisting some arms a bit or turning a head here and there, to support the already rather contorted, spastic look of the stock models.

In other cases, the changes are a bit more involved:

As you can see, some of the Poxwalkers are now wielding what looks like gardening implements, as an attempt to tie them into the cult’s overall theme (while also giving them a somewhat sinister medieval vibe). The middle guy takes the concept of branches erupting from the infected body to its logical conclusion — there’s probably a daemonic relative of Ophiocordyceps Unilateralis at work here (and I couldn’t resist incorporating some of the inspiration I had taken from The Last of Us).

There's also another thing I am currently working on, a piece of terrain, of all things. I am completing this for the monthly hobby challenge over at Azazel's blog, something that has helped me immensely when it came to painting neglected stuff last year, and I definitely want to keep it up. So I am currently working on the crashed aquila lander from the old Battle for Maccrage boxed set:

I've had those pieces for ages, and as you can see, some of them have been subjected to a prior, mostly unsuccessful attempt at painting them -- what was I thinking. Now for the second attempt, I've made some small tweaks to the piece with the cockpit:

Something that has always bothered me about this otherwise cool terrain piece is its complete hollowness, so I knew I needed to add in a pilot as well as the suggestion of a cockpit, so I whipped something up with a couple of leftover bitz:

The same hollowness also leads to the rear of the piece ending in a massive hole. Of course I had to close that off as well, both to make it look less awkward overall and to camouflage the fact that there's no real interior and also not a full cockpit, as I merely built the parts that you can see from the outside. So I added in a hatch (from an old model truck kit) and tied it into the rest of the design with a few bitz:

While the whole ensemble looks pretty improvised when you look behind the curtain, so to speak,...

...the rear hatch has the added benefit of covering it all up, so when the terrain piece sits on a flat surface, you only really see the elements you are supposed to see.

Everything has already been undercoated, which ties it all together rather nicely:

So yeah, that's it for today. As always, let me know what you think!

I'm really looking forward to what you come up with in 2019! You've got a great theme and cool conversions to go with it for those Eternal Gardeners!

I'm also working on Azazel's January challenge with bits from the Battle for Macragge box, though sadly only the scatter terrain/objective markers. I think I binned my Aquila lander in some move, something I regret to this day..

Cheers for the feedback, guys!

@ cheiflibrarian: Yeah, adding that cockpit was something that I have wanted to do for a long time -- glad to have finally taken the plunge!

@ mcmattila: I definitely feel for you -- I can still get angry at myself for most of the tabletop-related stuff I have managed to lose or break over the years, especially when you consider how crazy expensive much of that stuff is these days (yeah, I am looking at you, HeroQuest).

So while the aquila lander was all prepped and ready to go, yet another terrain project managed to jump the queue -- and it also has an aquila in it, ironically enough... So what is this about?

Two years ago, I built my own interpretation of Angron in his Daemon Primarch form, and I even included a snazzy modular display base based on the aquila terrain piece from the Honoured Imperium set -- only I never got around to finishing the second piece of the base, and I thought it was finally time to change that, so without further ado...

"And they shall know fear..."

And here's a view from the unlucky survivor's perspective...

I really feel I am giving the Ultramarines a fair shake here, though: That last guy looks dead set not to abandon his position and to fight to his last, which seems very much in character for the legion. I thinks that prevents the dead smurfs from just feeling like gratuitous splatter effects.

And here's a couple of additional detail shots:

And of course this post also provides me with the perfect excuse to include another look at Angron himself:

Time for another update: I have been a bit neglectful of this thread, but today I have something new to share with you all: A model I finished earlier, and actually a proper new member of the 4th assault company, befitting this thread's original subject.

Meet Argus the Brazen, of the World Eaters' 4th assault company:

As you can see, this guy is one of the OOP Forgeworld traitor legion Dreads. He was given to me as a present by fellow hobbyist Augustus b'Raas when I visited him in Amsterdam back in 2017. I may have taken my sweet time with finally painting this model, but I did want to do him proper justice, with a recipe that wasn't just a lazy knock-off of my older, defunct World Eaters recipe. Here's a closer look at the model:

The recipe I used for the model basically evolved out of my work on my Imperial Knight and, more recently, the first of my Armiger Warglaives, and to show you how my painting has - hopefully - evolved, here's a comparison shot with Argus next to a Dreadnought using my old recipe -- incidentally the first Dreadnought I ever painted, back in 2011 or so, Marax the Fallen:

While the photo - invariably, it seems, - eats up some of the finer points of my newer paintjob, I hope you'll agree that my recipe has become a bit more sophisticated.

As always, let me know what you think!
