Anyone use these? S6 Ap- seems weak as hell, even if they DO get triggered.

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes...

Alright, you've stumped me. I've looked through 4 codicies, but I still have no idea what you're talking about.

Only ones I can find are one of the two types of whirlwind missiles, except those ones are 4 str, ap 5, and cover ignoring.

No idea where hes pulling 6 str ap- missiles from.

I think its from the previous edition of the Space Marine codex...

The castellean missles for the whirlwind used to create minefields...this weapon never made it to the next edition of the codex...hence why it is no longer seen!

That's pretty cool. It's unfortunate it's no longer on the Whirlwind, but atleast the Scout Bikers have something similiar. I guess if the Whirlwind was more like the Thunderfire or Sternguard it would see more use as a utility unit.

I kinda liked the minefield idea. made the whirlwind more than just a artillery unit. it would force opponents to rethink moving squishy troops (like orks) certain directions

My friend used to field three of these.
His "instant booby trap" army was one of the most hilariously annoying in the store. I singularly blame him for making everyone else mech up to deal with those stupid castellan mines.

There's just an acre of you fellas, isn't there?

That was embarrassing. *throws his old codex out the window*

Yeah, great ideas. "Benefit: Entire army wears Artificer armour. Cost: Dislike 'The Colour Purple'.

I have the rules here now and they seem pretty legit to me, none of the costs were very slight... the Never Despair trait was awesome.

"At the end of the game the Space Marine player can request an extra turn be played. On a roll of a 4+ an extra turn in played."

and there are crappy ones...

"...any Command Squad or Veteran Squad...they duly receive a 6+ invulnerable save (only against shooting) but cannot gain cover saves"

The drawbacks can be major too, like this one "Flesh Over Steel".

"...may only take 0-1 selection of the following: Land Raider, Predator Destructor, Whirlwind or Vindicator...may not use Land Raider Crusader or Predator Annihilator...each transport uses a fast attack selection"

yea but pretty much EVERYONE chose the ones that did little to their army. so a lot of old lists would have a bunch of benefits and little negatives

And thats different from the current system how? At least sacrificing the ability to voluntarily fail a morale check forces some trade offs but alot of the Marine HQs unlock pretty devastating abilities for little opportunity cost.

Flesh Over Steel wasn't a drawback when vehicles, and particularly transports, were over-priced coffins.

Same price as now afaik, 50 for a Rhino, 70 for a Razorback? When was mech ever weak?

Get the new codex dude. They are much cheaper now

Mech was weak in 4th, all transports were deathtraps, tanks died easier, you had entanglement etc.

Yeah, SM vehicles are cheaper and better now. More of a cheap, effective upgrade to the squad than a whole nother unit. Chiming in to say that most of the benefits in the old trait system were increases in effectiveness, whereas the drawbacks tended to limit your felxibility and unit selection. So if you had an army idea that, say, didn't involve lots of FA choices, you could make the units you did like far better, without giving up anything at all.
