Hmmm I'm kind of at an impasse in fitting out the devastator Squad for my new BA army...

I'm putting in one devastator squad and since I'm pretty low on long range anti armour, I'm putting in two lascannons but for the remaining two I'm doubting, hard.
Either I put in two plasma cannons as I figure they're not too shabby on light vehicles and they can take out heavy infantry with their blast.
Or I drop one PC and replace it with a Heavy Bolter to take out the infantry...

It's been a few years since I actually played a battle and I haven't played the 5th edition yet (busy, busy life...), so I was wondering which would be the more tactically sound thing to do. Risk two marines blowing themselves up with the PC's during the game or trade of some firepower for safety in the for of a heavy bolter?

Several things

1. If you are worried about your marines blowing themselves up, don't be. There is less then a 6% chance gets hot will kill a marine.

2. No Lascannons!!!! For 15 points more than a missile launcher you get only one more point of strength and the lower AP won't help on vehicles. Also, you can't choose to have a frag blast with a Lascannon. Basically NO LASCANNONS!

3. Get 10 men in your squad, so each wound isn't killing a heavy weapon marine, and so that you can combat squad them so they can each shoot at different units. (I have no idea if you were planning on doing this but it is worth mentioning.)

4. I would go with the 2 Plasma Cannons

You'll want to take two Plasma Cannons as it's better to have to of the same weapon than to be mixing weapons. Besides a 3+ armour save on a ''Get's Hot'' isn't that bad.

Well, I'd give them missile launchers, nothing else.
Use the Dev's to pop tanks and transport, and let your units charge the remnants.

If you want plasmacannons - do it with sternguard instead of devastators. 145 plus all the nice sternguard bolter love for non-vehicle goodness.

I don't suggest devastators at all. They are far too expensive for how much firepower they deliver.

But if you are going to take them anyways, don't mix weapons in squads that are together.

Thanks for the quick responses guys!

Hmmm, sadly my lascannon guys already have their arms and backpacks glued on. :-/ Of course they could be pried off but I've got only one missile launcher and two heavy bolters available to replace them.

So the two plasma cannons are definitely in.
The squad is a full 10-men squad and to keep the anti-tank ability in one squad I'll guess I'll keep the LC's as well. Also because of the lack of enough replacement weapons.

Perhaps I could squeeze out one half-squad with two heavy bolters and two missile launchers. I think I should have one more missile marine somewhere that's half painted.

Sadly the sternguards are out as I've filled my Elite slots with the Sanguinary Guard, a 5-man CC termy squad and a 10 Termy shooty squad. (Oh, and a Sanguinary preist in termy armour, an agreed freebie in the elite slots due to the coolness of the model^^)

Basically it's not a tournament army, just 2500-3000 points thrown together a few of the many old models I have and some newly bought cool squads and vehicles. A mate of mine is (re)building his Space Wolf army and together we're planning on taking on some other mates with a Chaos army in a few months.

My army loadout so far is (roughly)
Captain in Terminator armour
Sang. Priest in Terminator armour
Reclusiarch in Terminator Armour
5 CC terminators
-Land Raider Crusader

Honour Guard with Jumpacks
Death Comp. with Jump Packs
Lemartes

Death Comp Dread
terminator squad (10) with two Assault Cannons
Tactical Squad with Multi-Melta, melta gun and Combi melta (melt!)

Razorback with twin LC's

A Baal Predator

2 Dreadnoughts

Devastator Squad - LC's and PC's

Possible units
A scout squad but I don't know because I never like liked the models much. ^^
Another tactical squad
