Hello, and welcome to my amy blog.

The History:
When a friend first started to get me into 40k, it was the Daemons of Chaos that caught my interest. And so, soon enough, they became my first army. Several of my other friends got into the game at the same time, and we all built armies of 600 points to try out the game without having to buy too many models. I enjoyed playing with the daemons, but also wanted to try out other styles of play, and so put them to the side to work on starting other armies

Fast forward to now, and I have three armies in total, all at roughly 600 points, since that's still the level most of our little group plays at. But we've all been starting to expand towards 1000 and beyond, and I find myself looking back at my daemons and thinking about what they could have been.
Over my time in the hobby, I've discovered a love of converting, of making my models uniquely my own. And while I was working on my other armies, I noticed Mosg's blog (link below), in which he converted an army of cyberdaemons, horrific amalgamations of daemonic flesh and warp-born machine. The seed of an idea was planted.

While I worked on my other armies, I followed Mosg's progress in his blog, and through that, saw CatPeeler's blog (link below as well), which had inspired Mosg. I found myself thinking how wonderful a thing a fully-converted army would be. Unique, personal, and seemingly completely beyond my meagre talents.

Now I find myself ready to start expanding my small forces in large armies, and I look back at my daemons, and know that I have improved my converting and painting skills, and that they no longer seem to truly be what I want from the army. And so, rather than merely add to my daemon army, I have chosen to expand it. But now, the daemon second wave models are (finally) here, Mosg's army, which gave my my first inklings of inspiration, is recently reborn in a new blog. So it seems the perfect time to make a start.

I do not know if my skill will truly be up to the task of making the army as good as I want it to be, but even if it is not, I will at least be able to learn from my attempts. I hope to create an army that looks cool, and which, though I've been inspired by others, is a different enough take on the concept that I can truly say they are unique to me.

The Links:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/260445.page - Mosg's original blog, which gave the idea I haven't been able to get out of my head since.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/248261.page - CatPeeler's blog, which provided further inspiration.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/298347.page - Mosg's new blog, where he recently revived and revamped his army.
The above blogs gave me the idea to do this, and showed me that it can, in fact, be done. Though my army may well never be as impressive as theirs (seriously, you should check out their stuff if you haven't already, these guys are geniuses), and I don't in any way wish to simply just copy from them, but rather to create my own take on the same concept, this army would probably never have happened if I hadn't seen these blogs, and the quality of their work is something for me to aspire to.

The Start:
While the concepts for many units in the army have been largely determined, the majority of it is so far still just in my head. I have however, recently made a start on testing my conversion plans on a couple of models. so for your comment and criticism, I begin the army blog proper with these:

Daemonette of Slaanesh
My daemonettes are have been planned for quite a while to have a single, mechanical leg, terminating in a wheel. All the fleet units in the army will have wheels as an indication of possesing this rule. One arm is a traditional daemonette claw, one ends ina curved blade. The helmet/mask is a recent idea I tried out on this model, and am reasonably happy with.

Does the wheel look enough like a wheel to get the idea across? is it about the right size? A friend suggested the small lumps of greenstuff to indicate an axle and make it look more wheel-like - do they help? Sometimes I think I preferred the flat lok of the wheel without them.

Bloodchrusher of Khorne
I knew for a while I wanted my juggernauts to be headless. Somehow, at least in my mind, the idea made them even more menacing - perhaps because it made them seem less alive, and thus less capable of emotion, or indeed anything other than mindless slaughter. When I got my hands on the new plastic kit, I had that idea ready to go, but it didn't end up looking quite as good as I'd hoped. While the juggernaut looked more alien, without a rider to direct it, it looked pointless, like a tool without a wielder. But I had no idea about what to do with the rider. I haven't yet worked out what conversions I want to do for my bloodletters. But in playing with the bits, I came up with the idea of centaurian juggernaut/bloodletter hybrids, and am for the most part, happy with the result.

My only reservation about this guy is that comparatively, the bloodletter torso is a little on the puny side. But overall, I've decided I really like the cetaurian look. What do people think of him? I'm considering buying a box of WFB chaos knights to use are bulkier, more armoured torsos. do you think this would work better? or have any other suggestions?
I intend to get some guitar wire to make a mechanical spine to fill the grove in the back of the bloodletter, connecting him to the more mechanical juggernaut body.

Please give me any feedback which comes to mind.

The Future:
I'm quite busy at the moment, so progress will probably be slow, but I do intend to keep coming back to this blog as I work on the army.
I'll have to take some photos of my soulgrinder conversion at some point, I forgot to when I took the shots of these two.
I'll sort out my ideas for the army as a whole a bit more, and post them here for comment form fellow dakkites.

So that's it for the first post. Let me know what you think.

That centaur is awesome. if you want to bulk it up more you might consider additional armor plates that cover part of the bloodletter's torso.

Thanks for the comments

I'm still not 100% sure about the bloodletter torso being the right size, but I'm glad to see you guys like the idea. I've got my hands on the guitar wire now, so I'm planning to put that on and make a start on painting him tonight. I'll try to get some pics in afterward, even if I don't get it completely finished, so you can see how it looks with some paint on.

I'll also take some pics of my soulgrinder tonight for the blog, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, please give me some more feedback - I'm particularly interested to see what other people think of the daemonette's wheel - leg thing, and of the "helmet" which I'm not really sure about yet. Any suggestions for things to change, or alternative things to try would be greatly appreciated

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, I was unable to get any work done last night after all. I only started this blog a couple of days ago and already I'm failing to deliver .
I might be able to get my bloodcrsher and daemonette painter tonight, but I might not have any free time.

However, I have managed to take enoguh time this morning to get some photos of my soulgrinder of slaanesh, so I can at least post those. Hope you all like them.

Soulgrinder of Slaanesh
I wanted the model to be immediately recognisable as a soulgrinder, as well as leaving no confusion about it's allignment to Slaanesh. I also wanted it to look significantly different to other soulgrinders I'd seen. So far I'm pretty happy with it.

I'm a little unhappy with the face, as in my greenstufing I've accidentally lost some of the detail of the eyes, which I'm going to have to try to fix at some point. The grill over the mouth is because this soulgrinder's mawcannon is in a different maw (see below).

The harvester gun arm. I started with the claw-like soulgrinder arm from the kit, and beefed up the claw a bit. Slaanesh seems to like his/her crab-claws, so I went with that. This is probably the part of the soulgrinder I'm least happy with so far. I'm not exactly sure what I want to change, though.

The mechanical arm on the other side I replaced with two mech-tentacles taken from a Dr Octopus toy. there were four tentacles, and the packaging said they were poseable, but actually only the top two were poseable, having thin wires running through them. the bottom two weren't, and didn't even have a hole to insert a wire into inside them. I was disappointed, but only really needed two of them here. One would look a little puny, and three would be too busy. I'd hoped to keep the others for potential use on a keeper of Secrets ad some point, but oh well.
Long, flexable, tentacle-like mechanical parts are one of the themes for the slaaneshi part of my army. I wanted both the fleshy and mecahnical parts of my daemons to have a distinct look for each god. Slaanesh gets flexable parts, and curvy, round bits, without hard edges. Most of the metal parts on the slaaneshi daemons will be painted gold.

The front of the torso is when the most converting has been done. Adding the breasts was pretty much the first thing I did with the kit. I just cut that piece from the sprue and got to work with the greensuff. I was very much a novice to greenstuffing at the time (I still am, I suppose, but I'm getting a lot better). After that I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the rest of it, so it got put to the sidelines for a while. Once I'd settled on the idea of a fully-converted army of cyberdaemons, I went back to it and decided on the rest of the conversions I've done. The most striking of which is almost certainly the vertical mouth on the lower torso which houses the mawcannon. I tried to make sure it looked like an actual mouth (the 'upper' lip - actually the left lip - has a philtrum, for example). However, the 'vertical mouth' concept is clearly and intentionally reminiscent of *ahem* other anatomical parts. I think the contrast between that imagery and the phallic symbolism of the large gun extending from it (which actually has a vein on top), fits Slaanesh pretty well. Reactions from my playgroup have been pretty positive, although I'm aware some people might think I've taken it a little far. Feel free to give your opinion.
The barrel of the gun is from a ballpoint pen, and the end comes from a cheap plastic cap-gun. The tongue is greenstuff supported by a bent paperclip. Obviously this soulgrinder has the tongue weapon upgrade

This last photo is sideways to show the mouth looking more like... well, a mouth.

So that's my soulgrinder as it stands at the moment. I think it's close to being ready to paint, but there are a couple of things I'd like to improve a little first, mostly around the eyes and the big claw. I guess I'm not overly happy with the shoulder where the tentacle arms join to the body, either.
What do you think? I'd really like some feedback on this guy - I've put a lot of work into him, and it'd be great to hear some opinions.

If I have free time tonight I'll get some paintign done on the test models of my daemonette and bloodcrusher, in which case I'll post pictures afterwards, even if I don't get them finished.

Just a quick post, since I promised to take photos of what I got done.
Ended up losing track of time last night and painting til 2am, so I just put everything away and left getting photos on here until the morning.
Here's what I have so far:

Over the course of painting, the Daemonette's sword-arm fell off, so I took the opportunity to shorten it, so the blade now only goes from the little curve to the tip, without the bit behind that. The bloodletter torso fell of the centaur-naut as well, and I'm leaving it off for now because it makes it easier to paint (attached with Blu-tack for the purpose of taking the photo).
The colour scheme on the juggernaut is necron abyss and dwarf bronze. the bronze has been washed with gryphonne speia, but it didn't seem to have much effect, I'm thinking of trying delvin mud next. The markings were done in blood red.
The daemonette skin is a mix of hawk turquoise and bleached bone, with a little bit of skill white added. The armour is burnished gold and liche purple, with warlock purple in the marking in the centre of the torso. The claw is hawk turquoise, with regal blue on the outside edges.
Neither is finished, and both need quite a bit of cleaning up in places, but there's enough there for you to get the idea of where I'm going at the moment. Neither colour scheme is set in stone, I'm just trying ideas, so feel freee to suggest changes or other things to try.

There've been a lot of views, but only two people other than myself have commented, so I'm keep asking questions in the hope of getting more feedback.
What do people think so far? Am I doing well? Am I completely insane? Does anyone have any ideas for how I should paint the bloodletter? (I sure don't)

If you have anything to say, good or bad, or any suggestions to give about any of the models I've posted so far, please do.

Thanks for the words of encouragement

@Tim the Biovore: Yeah, I do need to smooth it off at some point, particularly on the claw. I have some files and also sandpaper to attempt this with shen I get round to it.

I've made some progress on the bloodcrusher. I've done a second coat of Necron Abyss, which has made the colour much more even and less blotchy, and I've washed the bronze parts with Delvin Mud, which has brought out some of the detail more.
Unfortunately the I can't seem to take pictures which shoe the colour the same as it looks in person, but the two below are the ones which come closest.

Still need to paint and reattach the the bloodletter torso sometime to see how that looks. I'm thinking of either going with a traditional red colour, or maybe with a fleshy tone. Any opinions or other suggestions?

Thanks, LeBaron

I ah originally intended to do it mostly in black, with red in the markings on the legs (because while I like to make my colour schemes unique, you can't do a Khorne model without SOME red, right?), but once I sat down to paint I decided to see how a dark blue colour looked contrasted against the red, and I'm very happy with the result.

I should be able to get some painting done tonight, so I'll hopefully have the bloodletter torso painted and reattached, and get some photos to post. Stay tuned

I finished up the bloodcrusher test model. I went for redish flesh tone on the bloodletter, with just red on the horns, etc. Sorry, I did take a pic from the front, which showed the bloodletter torso quite well, but I missed that one when I started uploading them from the camera it seems. I'll add that one when I get home tonight. I also apologise for some of the pics being in the shadow of the camera, it was hard to avoid in the time I had due to the angle of the sun. I've just recently gotten a replacement desk lamp, though, so I can get out my old daylight bulb and use that to take photos with in future.

So what do people think? Should I just go with this and make up the other two from the box the same? Any suggestions on what works or what doesn't? Does the fleshy colour work against the dark blue, ro should I try something else?

As always, all comments and criticism appreciated.

I'm fine with the colour palette, but the area where the juggarnaut's head should be still looks like a head, down for a ramming, as opposed to another piece of armour.

Elsewise, I'm liking your work; keep it up!

Thanks for the comments, guys.
I'm going to try to make the division between the bloodletter and juggernaut look better next time I get an opportunity to paint.
And yeah, it does still look a bit like a head. I'm going to try to do that differently on the next one and see what I can come up with.

I got the front on photo uploaded, so here it is.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Update time!

I tried to blend the blue of the juggernaut and the flesh of the bloodletter to make it look like the metal morphed into flesh around the join, but it didn't look right. So instead I made it a hard divide, with all the greenstuff around the bloodletter being part of the flesh, and added rivets/nails be make it look like the flesh around the lower torso of the bloodletter has been spread out, and roughly nailed into place atop the juggernaut - which seems like a very khornate way of doing things
These pictures are the best I could take of them, but since they're very small, they stlill don't show up really well.

What do you all think? I'm pretty close to calling this guy done. While he was intended as the test model for the concept, I definately think he's good enough to use in the actual army, which is nice. I will however, on the future models, try to reduce the head-like nature of the front of the juggernaut, since as Lord Kaesar II pointed out, it still looks a bit like a head, which isn't the look I'm going for.

Whoa, these are fantastic! Dunno how I missed this thread I think it'll be worth picking out details like horns and teeth when you're painting, but the modelling (in particular that terrifying behemoth slaanesh thing and the daemonette) is top notch. I'll be following this for sure

Interesting stuff here I'll be keeping an eye on this.

Prefer the join on the centaur now with the nailed down flesh, but agree that the front armour plate is a little too head-like, maybe try extending it up the bloodletter's torso on the next one. Daemonette's pretty cool, and liking the soul-grinder, some peeps are going to think it's a little too much, but it is Slaanesh after all

And don't worry too much about a lack of comments, it often takes a while for feedback and replies to start rolling in.

Thanks guys.

@Scarper: I'm definitely a modeller more than a painter, I enjoy it more and I think I'm better at it. But I still like the painting and I'm trying to improve. I'll definately try picking out more of the details on the bloodcrusher. I just bouoght a darker red paint so I can make the horns look more distinct from the flesh, so I'll see how that goes.

@monkeytroll: Thanks for the compliment. I've had a look at your P&M blogs here, and they're really impressive, so coming from you that seems like high praise Hoping to have time to read over your threads in full at some point.

In the meantime, I've started work on my second bloodcrusher. I've cut back the juggernaut neck significantly more, to reduce the head-like-ness of the plate at the front (which no longer quite covers the hole, but with a little extra greenstuff it does the job). I've also modelled the nails holding the bloodletter onto the juggernaut this time, so I don't have to build them up afterwards on this one.

What do you think so far? Have I reduced the headishness enough? are the nails too over the top now? better/worse than the last?

Looking forward to hearing form all of you

Hi guys. Sorry for the lack of updates. I'm going to another city for a few days tomorrow for a job interview, and have been busy sorting everything out and getting ready.
I did get some painting done last night, so I'm putting up a quick WIP shot of what I have so far.

I've started painting the second and third of my bloodcrushers - and when doing the thrid one I realised ho much easier it would be to assemble and paint if I didn't attach the legs until later, so I'm painting the legs for that one separately. It was definitely much easier to get the bloodletter torso in position, so I'll be doing the this way from now on.

I won't be be able to do any more work until I get back on Tuesday evening, and I may be too tired from the flight then, I don't know. But certainly after that I'll get back to it and hopefully have some more progress to show you all.

I'm back, and I've made some progress on the bloodcrushers.

Here's the first one again, except that I've significantly increased the darkening of the horns as they get further from the body, and picked out the teeth in bleached bone with a delvin mud wash. The eyes are currently just chaos black, I plan to go over them with a gloss varnish after the models have been sealed with a spray-on matt varnish. I think the shiny black look will be good for their eyes

Here's the second one all painted up. You can see in the second photo the bolts holding the flesh onto the juggernaut body, which I think look much better that the tiny ones I added to the first one when I first came up with the idea.

And here's the third one, again, the bolts look much better that the first one, since they were modelled on from the beginning. This is the one where I realised I could make it much easier to do by not attaching the legs until after painting.

And here's a shot of all three together.

I'll need to do the bases for these guys sometime soon, and I think I want to touch up the faces a bit more, but my FLGS just got in the plasticard tubing I ordered for my first daemon prince conversion, so I may well be distracted by that for a bit

Started work on my Daemon Prince of Slaanesh today.
Here's the progress so far:

The torso. greenstuffed to add the breast and cover the chaos undivided symbol.

The head, with tentacle. I'm not sold on this, but I had no other use for the tail piece, so I decided to see how it looked. I'll reserve final judgement until I have the body mostly done and can see how it looks there. Also considering chopping off the end and greenstuffing a new one to shorten it.

The start of the lower body. electrical cords/wires of various sizes pushed into greenstuff, which was formed around a metal wire base. There will be segments of armoured plating made from plasticard tubing over this, but with gaps where these wires show though. The torso will be where the little hooky bit is on the end of the wire, and I'm not yet sure what I'll do with the end of the tail, although I was thinking of maybe having the tail end in a tyranid sycthing talon.

Still a fair way to go on this one, obviously. Any comments/criticism appreciated.
