I picked up the bases pack from a LGS today, and of the 25 28mm bases in there, 24 were cut for slottas... should I just go and get some plasticard and glue it on?

I've found that when you add on sand/basing material with unwatered PVA it covers the slots fine without having to do anything else.

I'll give the sprue technique a try.
I don;t use PVA for basing, I use Elmer's Glue-All watered down with about 25% water. I'll give it a whirl.

I can't imagine sand+glue slurry filling a slotta in. Maybe with thicker basing material or if you just have small areas open by the models feet.
I've seen people recommend tape, but I always found it fiddly and unreliable.

Use PVA for basing, seriously. Elmer's is garbage. PVA glue won't shrink, and it's archival so it's pretty much good forever. You can get a bottle of it for 8 bucks that will last you for years, and your basing will last for years too.

I use this stuff from Gale Force 9 and it fills in the slots just fine with no additional requirements.
Add on unwatered PVA to the base, spread it around with a cocktail stick (or however you want to do it), pour on the grit, shake off the excess and allow to dry.
I've done a lot of slot bases for non-slot models this way and never had a problem.

just cover the slit with a small bit of tape then cut away all the parts of the tape you don/t need with a hobby knife.
Once you put your basing on that no one will ever notice.

I use polyfiller to fill bases and slots.

I use a pinch of blu-tac (don't know what its called in the states). Tiny bit to fill the slot then a drop of superglue on it - goes solid in no time at all and won't budge. Takes seconds and costs next to nothing. Then just base over the top as usual.

My PVA glue + kitty litter covers it well.
I've also used a small piece of tape. Once you cover that with PVA glue and your basing medium, it's not going anywhere.
