They can work I'm sure. GW has in the past run global internet (and possibly postal if memory serves) campains. (Nemesis crown, Medusa V etc)

As to how they'd work, well for starters it'd require a person, or team of people, willing to invest time and energy into it. Most likely they'd be based around a map(s) campain or just a generic play lots of games and see who wins most. But generally map campains if you want a storyline to base it around.

From there it'd need some sort of scoring system and was of comunication between players and organisers. Probably via email and people report in what games they've won and lost (in theory at least) which the organisers would then filter down into some sort of formulae to see what faction was winning. Sample formuale: "Number of games won / Total Games played x100" this would give you a number between 0 and 100 (zero being if no games were won atall) and whichever faction has the highest number wins. simple

But, from what I gather these things can be a huge volume of work, with masses of results coming in that need dealing with, the possibility of cheaters etc and most importantly the time it would take to try and set one up and run effectively.

PM me if you want to talk this over more, or if you're planning to run an online campain let me know if theres anything I can do

I think they work best with a home page of some type. perhaps a forum or Facebook page.

Good idea. Imo, a FB page could be limiting because not everyone has FB.

But: you could post a link to the campaing homepage somewhere on Dakka. That way everyone could access it

I like to imagine the Emperor kills so many Orks that he ends up half buried beneath a pile of corpses, with only his head sticking out. A lone grot stumbles across him, and starts choking him.

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.

I was thinking that too but wasn't sure how to get it started.

Search for the War Over Zephyrus to get a feel of how they worked that one. It was an Online AI Campaign.

Keep in mind, since this would be "unofficial" (i.e. not GW supported) you can expect some low participation. If you are going to run it, run it because YOU want to.

I would be happy if i could get ten or so people interested, or a bit more. Amount of people isn't really important as much as a few people who are interested in the idea. I am still trying to work out the basics. Class and xmas has taken most of my time away from everything.

I will look up that thank you!

I think that if could be done, but you need a wide base to play from such as the campaigns run by GW. That you need multiple hobby stores involved not just players.

I think that mail order / postal / email campaign would be great! I would take part definitely!

Yeah i agree but I'm unsure how exactly it would be created, and how a point system for wins and such would be done, and how to get other interested in it. I have done some writeups of plots and ideas for the sturcture, but haven't had time to fully formulate them all due to having to finish my last year in college. I do want to try to get something running if you are interested

Had a cool idea, You go play a game at your FLGS then you post if you won, drew or lost. lost=0. draw=1. win=2. you use this to put renforcments on a risk (its a board game) style table. You then declare who is attacking what and on Sunday (or any other agreed day) night the campaign leader roles all the necessary dice and works out what happens. Its basikaly a game of risk with the renforcments controlled by warhammer games fought through the week.

so basically the game would be like risk, but instead of numbers of models it would be points, then depending on how well your team did you would get more points to place on this map, each game would defend or take another "land" of some sorts.

That would be cool, I would think the hardest part there would be who places those reinforcements, it could be a group of fractions, with each one having one leader who places these reinforcements, or we have them placed by each player (or a group of players) divided out equally.

Hey guys,

We over at Animosity (a Warhammer Fantasy Campaign Site) have been talking about 40k Campaigns ourselves, and myself and a few other like minded people are in the process of putting one together . The system would be similar to the tried and tested one fantasy campaigns follow, but adapted to fit in the 40k universe. If you've been working on one then we'd be happy to join forces.

As to the number of players, I've seen support on other forums for the idea, so you'd be talking more like 20+ rather then 10 guys.

Send me a PM if your interested, and we'll let you see what we have so far (we've been mainly working on the fluff of the campaign).

Thanks

Cutforth
