So does anyone play this because it looks like I am playing it. One of the local "cool guys" mentioned it in a thread the other day I don't remember which thread. Level 2 Bard on the O-server, pushing to level 10 with all my muster! Planning a "Spot" character probably a multiclass Elf Ranger-Rogue-something. Because being able to "Spot" things is just so cool.
I was just reading something turns out if I take the repair feat I can get a summoning enhancement neato. I actually have the summoning perk on my Bard, where your summons minions etc get +4 to their stats etc.

I used to hate the micro transaction thing, but i am warming up to it.
It lets you pick and choose what you want to pay for. Some content I wont and never will use. Its nice to be able to pay for just what you want sometimes.

I think I would play it if it weren't for WoW. I'm really only turned off to micro-payment games because in my experience, most free games are fairly poor quality. As much as I hate forking over 15 bucks a month for WoW, I do enjoy the fact that it's a pretty high quality game with plenty of content.
Although I will say this about F2P MMOs, they're much better for leaving to sit in the dust for a few months if you get busy with something else, or decide to stop playing. Unless you constantly cancel/renew your subscription for games like WoW, you really start wasting money if your gaming schedule gets knocked down a bit.

Well DDO (and now LotrO) started as a subscription game so you are getting a subscription level game as F2P. LotRO went F2P becuase DDO exploded when it went F2P and even though LotRO was doing quite well as just subscription based and they are hoping that they will keep the subscribers (you can still pay the monthly for all access) and get the micro transactions.

DDO is one of the few microtransaction games that you can actually play through without paying for anything, so at least that's something.
I prefer LOTRO (as it was a fully-functioning subscription game for longer than DDO, and as such has much more content and depth), but DDO is definitely the second-best free-to-play MMO on the market.

Yes I have noticed that if you play for free you get to fight Kobolds and Spiders but if you subscribe you get the ADVENTURE PACKS.
Got to level 3, got my level in Barbarian. Dude gave me 1k platinum (yes, really) bought a big axe on the AH. Rage + Power Attack + Attack Power Enhancement + Big Axe == Win.
<----- happy camper.

Here’s my review on DDO based on my experiences.
I played DDO up until level 10 before I got distracted with other things. It’s a good casual style MMO that doesn’t require dedication. One of its strong points is the extensive use of narration and story in even simple dungeon. I also like the addition of traps, puzzles and non linear terrain to make dungeon crawling more interesting. I also liked how every quest in the game is pretty much a dungeon/narrated adventure that can be customised in terms of difficulty. I am also a big fan of the games true reincarnation mechanic (when you hit max level, you can start again at level 1 but with higher base stats and abilities. You can also choose a different race/class/gender).
I would personally recommend the game to anyone. Don’t let the micro transaction model put you off. True there are micro transaction games out there where the game is designed to make the player splurge money but DDO isn’t one of them. 99% of the stuff in the micro transaction store is garbage that you don’t need. You pretty much don’t need to spend a cent unless you want to play a member only dungeon, race or class (races and classes can be unlocked for free players anyway). Even then, there is a cheapish subscription mode of payment where as long as you subscribe, you have access to everything and get some turbine points on the side.
The only downside to the game is that turbine is a bit lazy and tends to release new dungeons for updates rather than in game functionality (which is what most players want).
Interestingly enough, I’m thinking of giving LOTRO a crack since a lot of the reviews of the game tend to be fairly positive. LOTRO uses the same game engine as DDO and is a similar game from what I hear but gives the player more options. I've done my research and since LOTRO now has the same F2P mechanic that DDO uses, it might be the perfect time to play.

LOTRO is not very similar to DDO. Think WoW with a continuous branching storyline and more complexity in the system (or simply terminology that takes a while to understand), and that's a fairly accurate description. Turbine has spent much more time and effort on LOTRO than they have on DDO (despite being essentially the same as the majority of MMOs), and it shows. I just wish that LOTRO had the same awesome narration as DDO.
You might as well play it; it's free.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I am aware of those things as well. My comments were more of an overgeneralised observation without going into the specifics. A lot of people on the turbine forums like to say both games are similar in spirit.
The story line setup is indeed different, with a continuous branching storyline as opposed to the centralised adventures in DDO. The combat system is also more of a classic MMO system then the psuedo 3.5 system used by DDO with a few interesting features (the conjunction attacks seem pretty cool).
I also wish turbine paid more attention to DDO as well although update 7 testing on the testing server is up this weekend, including testing for half orc and half elf. Now all DDO needs is a race change feature (that doesn’t involve true resurrecting) and a Drow prestige enhancement and we’ll be in business

Some friends just convinced me to give it a try so it's currently downloading.
I once gave D&D a try, but the complexity (at the time) of it drove me away. Shortly after I started 40k 4th ed, then got bored of that as well
I don't really know much about the one I have. It's called Advanced Dungeons and Dragons: Dragon Quest.

My brother got me and my dad to play it, Twas fun. Only problem is is my brother has MMO ADD, and so basically by the time we were all level 3 he left the game, so me and my dad started playing until I got to level 4 and he got to level 6. Then it started to get meh.
It was awesome though. I (as the Fighter of the group) got in a fair amount of Leroy Jenkins' where I ran in and killed the boss before my buddies actually got in the door.
