The fundamental theorem of arithmetic states that for every number there is one and only one prime factorization.

Just throwing that out there.

I concur.

I also can't be bothered trying to come up with an example (which likely doesn't exist) of where that might be incorrect.

Have you perchance been reading mathisfun.com ?
(Its the first place that came up when I googled prime factorization )

I'm studying math with frequent check ups on dakka. It's too boring for words. No there is no number for which that statement does not hold true. the prime factorization of 27 for instance is 3x3x3. no other combination of prime numbers yields that result. it's kind of interesting really, if you care about math..... which I have to, since I'm studying it.... and which otherwise I would not.... like not even a little bit.

sigh

Yeah, I used to like math quite a bit.

Then I made the horrible mistake of doing year 12 Maths Methods (The second most advanced math available at the school) while in year 11, and came across stuff I actually had to *think* about...

Math is less fun when its not easy, math theory even more so.

Edit:

OT does seem quieter over the past coupla days....I wonder why....

Out of curiousity, where do you actually go with a math background other than teaching?

I'd imagine it gives a good basis for going into physics/engineering, but is there still a call for mathematicians in research etc?

you can make alot of money as an engineer with a 4 year, although engineering is a better background than pure math, per se. you can do research as a mathematician too but you need a phd like with other fields. its probably easier to get that kind of job than many others just because math isnt exactly the most popular subject..... I cant imagine getting an advanced degree in this stuff though.

Yeah...I was considering doing honours in my field (IT, mostly programming) and couldn't even begin to think what I'd actually *do*, let alone if I wanted to go on to do Masters/PHD.

I figured that I've spent what is probably more than enough of my life span in school uni by now as well, maybe when I'm older I'll go back, or if I'm really struggling to get a job.

Still, good luck with all that imaginary number stuff you no doubt have to do...stupid theoretical math

I'm so glad that mathematics aren't compulsory for the last two years of school here.

I never really pictured myself putting all that algebra and junk to good use. School system has to make some assumptions to keep things moving, I suppose.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

if you get a phd in math the job is cake. 100k a year to teach undergaduates + lifetime job security? Yes please!
thanks..... I got through it. just mapping circles on a cartesian plain. pretty damn boring. AF

ummmmmmm..... I dont think there is a prime factorization for non-rational numbers..... but I'm not really sure about that.

I should have qualified though - its not just any kind of number. its true of positive intigers. It is not true of negative numbers, since both 3x3x-3 and -3x-3x-3 = -27, and 0x2 and 0x3 both = 0. I think it would be true of any positive rational number however because both the numbers composing it would be subject to that rule, so it makes sense that the total number would be as well.

well my immediate goal for studying math is to not be poor. I want to pursue an advanced degree in history but I'm nervous about employment opportunities after I get the thing. a 4 year in math is way more employable than a phd in history. I know people with history degrees who live with their parents. that is not going to happen to me

I can think of nothing worse than finishing a university course and then getting a job in an entirely unrelated field...although I was on the verge of looking when I landed my current job, stupid GFC messing with the job market *shakes fist*

My current job? Just a tech support role, high enough up that I don't have to talk to customers thankfully.

If you meant the GFC: Global Financial Crisis, that big ole' recession. It was the term coined for it over here, I assumed it was international.

I also like that song, even if I don't really understand the mandlebrot set Jonathan Coulton has a few good ones, The Future Soon would have been somewhat appropriate for the Post-human future thread come to think

no.... I've never heard it called the GFC. I'm hoping that by repetition I can get my friends to start calling it TGDMDGUISWYDDVFPI2012BCIWOMESW (that-goddamn-mess-deregulation-got-us-into-so-whatever-you-do-dont-vote-for-pailin-in-2012-because-it-will-only-make-everything-suck-worse)......... it doesnt seem to be catching on though.

That said, I never studied it beyond what I had to for an ethics class

-3 isn't a prime number. 3 and negative 1 are but -3 has a prime factorial of the previous. That said, yeah 0 doesn't comply.
